JOB SUMMARY The Dean of the School of Engineering is responsible for effective leadership in teaching, innovative and applied research endeavors, and outreach/engagement activities. The Dean will provide leadership for the school s curricular initiatives, professional training, and recruitment and retention of high quality faculty, staff, and student talent. The Dean is expected to provide exceptional leadership and overall direction to elevate the school to the forefront as a dynamic and responsive program in selected facets of engineering education by working collaboratively with the faculty and staff to effectively and meaningfully engage the engineering community. SCHOOL OF ENGINEERING DEAN The Dean is also responsible for the school s strategic planning, program evaluation and development, alumni engagement, fundraising, enrollment, retention, student persistence and completion, market planning, interdisciplinary initiatives in education and research, and the management of the school s administrative and financial affairs. The Dean will work closely with the Executive Director of Liberty University s Center for Energy Research and Education, an innovation center that supports industry collaboration and the growth of the engineering programs. The Dean also appoints department heads, oversees accreditation, develops new curricula and programs, and strengthens external relationships. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the challenges of engineering education in an increasingly competitive and technologically diverse environment. This leader will motivate and manage change, energize a committed faculty and staff, and have the ability to forge partnerships, raise funds and partner with the engineering community.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS Earned Master s degree in a discipline relevant to the academic programs in the School of Engineering Record of success in the private and/or academic sectors Strong commitment to developing a world-class applied research program Strong background in engineering, technology, and/or science Dedication to the mission, vision, and Christian Worldview of Liberty University PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS Earned terminal degree in a discipline relevant to the academic programs in engineering Related experience in the energy sector Demonstrated excellence in teaching Interest in developing graduate level programs Entrepreneurial leader that seeks innovative and creative avenues to expand the school s academic offerings and extracurricular learning opportunities for students Energetic and technologically adept communicator who can inspire, cultivate key external relationships, attract industry partners, raise funds, generate enthusiasm among alumni, and obtain commitments to support the growth of the school Experienced and results oriented administrator/manager with a track record of success in a large, complex organization Understanding of finances and the relationship between priorities and the budget Overseer of the activities necessary to maintain the school s accreditations Partner to the provost and collaborator with other VP s and Deans to ensure a university-wide perspective on broad institutional matters PRINCIPLE RESPONSIBILITIES The Dean s responsibilities include (not in priority order): In collaboration with the faculty, providing intellectual leadership and a strong commitment to the educational programs housed in the School of Engineering Working with the faculty to continuously improve the teaching/learning programs and environment of the school. Working in consultation with the Provost and in collaboration with other Deans, Directors, and Senior Leadership to ensure a universitywide perspective on broad institutional matters. Increasing the school s resource base by engaging in fundraising activities for the school. Building networks and forging and strengthening alliances with industry partners. Overseeing the activities necessary to maintain the school s accreditations. Encouraging greater creative work and applied research activity involving both undergraduate and graduate students in externally funded and campus-supported efforts. Working to promote innovation and entrepreneurial activities in the School while raising its academic stature and funding. Leading efforts/activities to enhance the student experience while advancing enrollment, retention, and persistence efforts among the school s students. Providing outstanding strategic leadership and critically evaluating/embracing emerging directions in higher education, industry, and the technology spheres. Enhancing the School of Engineering s brand through activities, events, and intellectual leadership in business, industry, and engineering communities.

CENTER for ENERGY RESEARCH & EDUCATION The Center for Energy Research and Education (CERE) is a state-of-the-art complex built to serve the scientific and engineering community. The complex provides partnering opportunities for students, faculty, and the energy industry. Our purpose is to enhance new technologies and develop the future industry through applied research and education. The CERE is home to the Integral System Test (IST), a pilot-scale test facility with all of the systems necessary to support the operation of the mpower small modular nuclear reactor. Liberty s School of Engineering will relocate to the CERE in Fall 2019 with over 600 engineering students in multiple disciplines. The CERE continues Dr. Falwell s vision to produce Christ-centered graduates who can impact tomorrow s world.
