CITI PROGRAM INSTRUCTIONS Go to www.citiprogram.org. If you already have a CITI account click the Log In button, enter your username and password, and skip to item #2. If you are new to CITI click on the Register button located in the top right corner of the page. The next steps are numbered 1-8 to match the CITI registration process. These steps will collect information to register your account and place you in the correct course based on your institutional settings. Step 1, Select Your Organization Affiliation". Begin typing Catherine in the space given. It will auto-fill with the institution. Step 2, Personal Information requests that you enter your first and last name along with your email address. Please enter your name here as you would like it to appear on your completion report received at the end of the course. Use an email address that you can easily access - you will need to complete the registration process by verifying the email from CITI. When complete, select Continue to Step 3. Step 3, Create Your User Name and Password. Choose a username and password for your account. Please follow the on screen instructions for the expected parameters of each field. Passwords are case sensitive. During this step you will also select and answer a security question. This question will be used to assist in the recovery of your account if you have forgotten your username or password. Please select a question that is applicable to you and you can comfortably answer for the tech support team. When complete, select Continue to Step 4. Step 4, Select your Country of Residence. When complete, select Continue to Step 5. Step 5 is where professionals seeking credit for CITI Program courses can make their selection for Continuing Education credits. When complete, select Continue to Step 6. Step 6 is institutional specific. Each institution determines the fields listed on this page and what information is required or optional. Institutional Email, Department and Role is Research are required fields. Any questions regarding the fields on this page should be directed to spree@stkate.edu, x8822. Select Continue to Step 7 at the bottom of the page. Step 7 questions enroll you in CITI Program courses. Four different questions are displayed listing all possible courses. Please read each question carefully to ensure you are enrolled in the correct course. To clarify, CITI is an online course system used to fulfill several different research integrity requirements. It is not necessary to take all courses as each course exists for a different purpose and audience. You should only select one option for each question and if you want to add multiple courses do so by answering multiple questions. Question 1: Human Subject Research Courses: The following courses satisfy CITI training requirements for IRB applications. There are three course tracks to choose from under Human Subject Research. Researchers only need to select one of these three tracks. Biomedical Research Investigators: Choose this group if you are involved primarily in Biomedical research with human subjects. Social & Behavioral Research Investigators: Choose if you are involved primarily in Social and Behavioral research with human subjects. Education Action Research Program: Choose this if you are involved primarily in education (classroom) settings with human subjects. The following course is recommended for students learning about Human Subject Research but DOES NOT satisfy the CITI training requirements for an IRB application. Introduction to Human Subject Research for Students in the Classroom: Choose this group for an overview of Human Subject Research for students learning about research. 3
Question 2: Responsible Conduct of Research Courses: Required for all faculty and students paid with wages from internal or external grants and contracts (also known as sponsored projects). There are three course tracks choose from: biomedical; social, behavioral & educational sciences (SBE); or physical sciences. After completing the two required modules, select two elective modules to complete for a total of four modules in your. RCR for Biomedical Research Investigators RCR for Social, Behavioral and Education (SBE) Sciences RCR for Physical Science Researchers Question 3: Financial Conflict of Interest Course: This course is required for investigators applying for grants from the National Science Foundation or Public Health Service agencies. There are four required modules within this course that must be completed. There are two additional modules that are optional. Only take this course if instructed by SPREE. Question 4: Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS): This course is geared towards biomedical research where participants are patients, or investigators have access to protected health information. Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) Course - Information for Investigators Health Information Privacy and Security (HIPS) Course - Information for Students or Instructors HIPS Course - Information for Nursing Students and Instructors To reiterate, it is not necessary to take all course offerings unless the different compliance requirements for the different course offerings all apply to you. Simply select the appropriate course and select not at this time for courses you do not need to fulfill. Step 8: After selecting your course(s), click on Finalize Registration. You are then given the opportunity to affiliate with another institution if needed. Your learner account registration is now complete. You will receive an account confirmation email to the address provided in Step 3. 1. If you already have a CITI user and did not do steps 1-8 above but are new to St. Catherine University you will need to affiliate to our institution. Access the main menu of your account by clicking on the Main Menu tab in the upper left-hand corner of the page and then Click here to affiliate with another institution". Refer to Step 1 above if you have questions. 4
Note: If you would like to receive credit for modules previously taken at a different institutions, there are several requirements that must be met. a) You must choose the same course at both institutions (i.e. Group 1 Basic/Same -Biomedical Basic/Same - Group 2 Refresher/Same) in order to get credit. You will receive automatic credit for any modules that are duplicates based on each module s unique ID number. Because each institution determines which modules are available in their courses not all modules may transfer. b) Each institution determines the time frame in which modules are transferable. This time frame can span any time between 1 and 10 years. Some institutions opt out of this option and do not allow modules to transfer. 2. To begin your course, click on St. Catherine University Courses and click on the course name. If you need to change your course registration, click on Add a Course and reference to Step 7 above for information about the different courses offered in CITI for St. Catherine University. 5
3. Once you have added a course, you can click on the course name to start. You must complete all required modules to complete the course. You must achieve an average score of at least 80% on all quizzes, but may retake quizzes as often as needed. 4. Once you have completed your course, you can download a completion report from CITI. To download a completion report click on Main Menu and then St. Catherine University Courses. A table appears listing each Course, Status and Completion Record. Click on View-Print-Share to download a copy of your CITI completion report. 5. CITI offers Completion Reports and Completion Certificates. The IRB requires you to upload a Completion Report to Mentor IRB. 6
