Math EOG Test Taking Strategies Good Luck!

Before the Test... Relax Get a good night's sleep before the test. Try to make the night before and morning of the test a pleasant one. Avoid stress. Eat a good, filling breakfast the morning of the test. Remember we will not eat lunch until about 1:30 pm. Bring a healthy snack and water to eat prior to the test session beginning.

During the Test... Try to answer ALL of the questions and DO NOT leave any blanks. There isn't a penalty for guessing. Listen carefully to the instructions from the teacher, and read the directions to each question carefully. Use time wisely. If you get stuck on a question, make the best guess or place a mark in the test booklet by that item and go back to it after finishing that section of the test. Look for key words in test directions and questions such as: choose, describe, explain, compare, identify, similar, except, not and but. Pay close attention to wording. Some words like NO, NOT, NEVER, and ALWAYS, can change the whole meaning to the question. Read each question carefully at least twice and think carefully before you answer.

Be sure that you understand the question before you start to compare answer choices. Look at ALL answer choices and choose the best and most complete answer. If you are not sure which answer is correct, eliminate choices that you know are incorrect then focus on the remaining choices. Think carefully before you change your answer. Usually your first choice is correct. If you have to change an answer be sure to erase completely. Stay focused on the test, even if other students finish early. Don't get distracted.

During the Math Test Know the Vocabulary! Make sure you are familiar with all of the related terms that may appear on the test area, circumference, product, quotient etc... Do you know your formulas? Underline Key Words! Read the problem carefully then underline the key words that indicate what you are required to find. Are you looking for the sum? The difference? The perimeter? The area? Recognize and Eliminate the Unnecessary! Often math word problems will provide you with information that you don't need in order to solve the problem. Seek the information you need and ignore the information you don't.

Select a Strategy! Often there is more than one way to solve a problem. Choose the strategy that will work best for you. Will you draw a picture? Use a formula? Make a graph? Use Estimation and Recognition and Mental Math! In many cases you will be able to recognize the correct answer immediately. In others, you may be able to simply make an estimate. This, can save you a lot of time. Read All of the Options and Beware of the LURE! Before you jump to any conclusions, make sure that you read all of the possible answers. Often one of the options, usually the first or second one will contain an answer that appears correct but is actually wrong. Read the answer choices from D up to A!

RELAX AND BREATHE! Be Confident! You all will do well!

Steps to Math Problem Solving Tests 1. Preview: First read the entire problem. 2. Read: Reread the problem slowly and carefully. 3. Visualize: Picture in your mind what is happening in the problem. Draw a picture, diagram or table to help you visualize the problem. 4. Decide: Decide what you are required to find out. Use the key words to decide what operation(s) you will need. 5. Highlight: Highlight/underline key words.

Steps to Math Problem Solving Tests 6. Circle: Circle the given number facts. Cross out any facts not needed to solve the problem. 7. Solve: Copy the example carefully and work it out. 8. Check: Check your computations and answers. 9. Recheck: Reread question. Does your answer make sense for the question? 10. Label: Is your answer in correct units?
