agenda 10 minutes! What is design thinking? How can we integrate design thinking into engineering education AND and higher education management? Making design thinking part of your innovation processes Q&A
Design thinking is a humancentered approach to innovation that draws from the designer's toolkit to integrate the needs of people, the possibilities of technology, and the requirements for business success. Tim Brown (President and CEO of IDEO)
Design Thinking is a mindset that is Human-centered & empathic Collaborative Optimistic/enjoyable Experimental develops the confidence that new, better things are possible and that you can make them happen!

Thinking like a designer can transform the way you develop products, services, processes and even strategy. TIM BROWN, IDEO
HIGHER EDUCATION IS ONE (IF NOT THE MOST) IMPORTANT SERVICE TO SOCIETY! as engineers, we should be applying DESIGN THINKING as well as teaching it!
In the spirit of honoring traditions, universities hang on to past practices imperiling their future. Clayton Christensen Harvard University
TRADITIONAL vs DESIGN THINKING TRADITIONAL THINKING Flawless planning Avoid failure Rigorous analysis Presentations Arms length customer research Periodic Thinking DESIGN THINKING Enlightened trial & error Fail fast Rigorous testing Lightweight experiments Deep customer immersion Continuous Doing
DESIGN THINKING Uncertainty / Patterns / Insights Clarity / Focus innovation Research Concept / Prototype Design
DESIGN THINKING the process Empathy findings are unpacked and synthesized into compelling needs and insights Getting ideas and explorations out of the head into the physical world Chance to refine and improve solutions Foundation of a human-centered design process necessary to observe, engage and immerse Mode during the design process in which the focus lies on idea generation similar steps as in the engineering problem solving approach!
DESIGN THINKING TO DESIGN THE CURRICULUM Empathy findings are unpacked and synthesized into outcomes or competencies Implement the curriculum Chance to refine & improve via outcomes assessment Understand the needs of employers, country, region, world Mode during the design process in which the focus lies on idea generation that can develop competencies continuous improvement cycle required by outcomes based accreditation!
DESIGN THINKING IN TEACHING/LEARNING DESIGN Empathy findings are unpacked and synthesized into compelling learning outcomes & learning methods Try/test them in your classroom Evaluate outcomes to refine and improve Learn how people learn & what competencies are needed Think of a variety of teaching/learning methods there s a big difference between design thinking in the practice and the way we teach design in engineering education!

agenda 10 minutes! What is design thinking? How can we integrate design thinking into engineering education AND and higher education management? Making design thinking part of your innovation processes Q&A
To make design thinking part of your innovation strategies Begin at the beginning Take a human-centered approach Try early and often Seek outside help Involve design thinkers at the very start. Along with business & technology, innovation should factor in human behavior, needs & preferences. Create an expectation of rapid experimentation & prototyping. Expand the innovation with others in the ecosystem. Adapted from Design Thinking, Tim Brown, Harvard Business Review, June 2008
How to make design thinking part of your innovation strategies Blend big & small projects Budget to the pace of innovation Find talent any way you can Design for the cycle Manage a portfolio of projects: short-, mediumterm impact to long-term r(e)volutionary impact Don t constrain the pace at which you can innovate by relying on cumbersome budgeting cycles. Diverse, interdisciplinary, multi-cultural, multinational. Design projects may take longer than expected. Plan assignments for the whole cycle (inspiration, ideation, implementation) Adapted from Design Thinking, Tim Brown, Harvard Business Review, June 2008

It s awesome to be an engineer and to teach engineering!
