Sixth Form 2018-2020

Queen Elizabeth s School High Quality, High Expectations, High Standards

Do you have the QE Sixth Form Need to Achieve? You might be the kind of student who has very clear ideas about your future job or career aspirations and know exactly which subject combinations to take. On the other hand you may have several options to consider or be undecided. Once you have made the decision to study further, the best advice the school can give is to undertake as much research as possible about your Sixth Form options and gather as much information as you can on all the ideas you have for your future. Now is also a good time to think beyond Sixth Form education and consider what you might use these qualifications for. Working back from your career aim can make decisions much easier. For example, it may be easier to gain a place on a particular University course, or embark upon a specific apprenticeship or career, if you have studied a certain combination of subjects at Sixth Form. With a range of subjects and qualifications to choose from, combining these into a programme of study that meets your individual needs can be difficult, particularly if you have to decide between favourite subjects. Decision-making is not always straightforward. It will depend on your preferred style of learning, whether you would rather have a classroom environment or a more practical approach to study, and of course about where you are heading in the future. It s about finding the course and pathway that suits you best. Whatever your plans for the future, staff at Queen Elizabeth s School are always available to give you the advice and guidance you need. Your tutor continues to play a lead role in providing support and will be able to give immediate advice on a suitable pathway for you. At the same time, our careers advisors would be delighted to meet you and your parents/carers if more detailed guidance and planning is required. Appointments can be made using the contact details at the back of this booklet. If you are an external student who is looking to apply to join us at QE then the same level of support applies to you too. The following pages will make clear how qualifications can be combined, the number of subjects to be studied and the entry criteria. When choosing, it s important that you read the course outlines and talk to subject staff about your intentions. You may also find a discussion with current Sixth Form students may help you decide: they have already gone through this process and will be able to answer many of the questions you may have. Further information can be found in the options booklet on the Sixth Form page of the QE website. I hope that with this information you are able to complete your application to QE Sixth Form, but do please contact your tutor or any member of the Sixth Form team if you would like further information. With best wishes for success in your GCSE exams this summer. Chris Buller Assistant Headteacher Sixth Form CBuller@qe.dorset.sch.uk 3 3

Combining Qualifications The Sixth Form at Queen Elizabeth s School provides the opportunity for a further 2 years study to prepare you for further education, an apprenticeship, employment or training. Our entry requirements are that you have obtained at least 5 or more GCSEs or equivalent grades at 5 to 9, that you commit to a full time programme of study and that you have met the entry criteria for the subjects that you have chosen. Volume of Study It is our expectation that all students complete at least 3 A levels or equivalent subjects for their time in the Sixth Form. Some students may wish to complete 4 subjects. This volume of study provides for a breadth of knowledge and ensures that our students remain competitive when making University applications or seeking apprenticeships and employment. All students will also undertake an enrichment opportunity as part of their study programme. The table below highlights the qualifications we offer and how they can be combined to form the recommended volume of study. Level 3 Qualifications Minimum Subject Entry Requirements Recommended Volume of Study Progression Routes A Level BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate (single award) Cambridge National Level 3 (single award) BTEC Level 3 Diploma (double award) 5 or more GCSEs or equivalent grades at 5 to 9. Each subject has individual entry criteria. Some subjects may have a Route A and Route B entry option to ensure that students who may not have studied that subject at GCSE can still have the opportunity to study the subject through route B as a Sixth Form Option. Students who meet the minimum entry criteria but do not have at least a Grade 4 in English and Maths will be asked to retake the GCSE in Year 12 as their enrichment option. Enrichment lessons are timetabled within the option blocks. 3 or 4 A Level subjects 2 or 3 A Level subjects + BTEC/Cambridge Nationals 1 or 2 A Levels + BTEC/Cambridge Nationals 1 Compulsory Enrichment option University Degree Foundation Degree Higher Level Apprenticeship Level 3 Apprenticeship Further Education and Training Employment This booklet outlines the Year 12 provision that is currently being planned for the next academic year. Please check the QE website and Sixth Form page for key updates. 4

Overview of A Level Qualifications Queen Elizabeth s School are a Linear A Level provider only. This means that all courses will be a 2 year fixed commitment with no AS Level routes as an option. The new specification A Levels mark a return to final examinations as a determiner of overall achievement, with coursework or non-exam based assessment only being used when it is necessary to measure the practical application of specific skills within a subject. In making your subject choices it is important that you read the options booklet fully to understand the nature of assessment required and the amount of work you may have at various points in the year, particularly if you intend to complete a mixed programme of A Levels and Vocational qualifications. 5

Overview of BTEC & Cambridge National Qualifications These courses are very popular vocational qualifications that have equivalency with A Levels. They can be studied alongside A Levels, providing a student with a rounded and varied set of qualifications. Qualifications are achieved entirely through the completion of coursework and assessments, which is both internally and externally set and assessed. Many students benefit from a mixed programme of A Level and vocational level subjects as this creates a clear balance between coursework and final exams. They are the perfect choice for students who prefer to manage their workload over the course of the 2 year commitment. Students completing a vocational qualification are working towards the following outcomes: Grade UCAS tariff UCAS equivalence to A-Level DfE equivalence to A-Level Starred distinction 56 A* A Distinction 48 A Between B and C Merit 32 C Between C and D Pass 16 E Between D and E We offer 3 types of vocational qualifications across a number of subjects which have the following A Level equivalency: BTEC Extended Certificate: Cambridge National Extended Certificate:: BTEC National Diploma: equivalent to 1 A Level equivalent to 1 A Level equivalent to 2 A Levels 6

Sixth Form Courses 2018-2020 Naturally there are a whole range of factors to consider in deciding which pathway to follow and students should consider a number of questions when making choices towards their desired destinations: What are your ambitions for your future destination - University, Apprenticeship or Employment? What subjects and grades will you need to get you there? What subjects are you currently successful in? Which subjects interest and inspire you? If you are still unsure of your future, choose a range of subjects which keep as many doors open as possible. Strive to develop a range of skills across a range of subjects - what would be your broad and balanced subject choices? Minimum Sixth Form Entry Criteria 5 or more GCSE or equivalent grades at 5 to 9. Minimum Subject Entry Options A minimum of 3 and maximum of 4 subjects can be selected from 4 different option blocks. A maximum of 1 subject per option block. 1 compulsory Enrichment option Please Note: A course may not be offered if there are too few students wishing to study that subject. Minimum Subject Entry Criteria Each subject has individual entry criteria. Some subjects may have a Route A and Route B entry option to ensure that students who may not have studied that subject at GCSE can still have the opportunity to study the subject as a Sixth Form option. The full range of subject entry requirements can be found in our options booklet on the Sixth Form page of the QE website. 7
