Curse Grade Determinatin: Lecture Exams: 45% Cmprehensive Final Exam: 20% Prblem Slving: 20% Current tpic Pwerpint: 15% Exams (45% f grade) All exams will be a mixture f multiple chice, prblem slving, true r false, fill in the blank, matching r shrt answer frmat. There will be three lecture exams given during the semester; each wrth 15% f yur ttal curse grade. If yu miss any f the 3 lecture exams fr any reasn, the scre yu receive n the final exam will replace that missed exam s value If yu miss a secnd r subsequent exam, yu must prvide acceptable dcumented evidence (e.g. frm dctr, plice, University fficial etc.). Excuses must be n letterhead with a cntact phne number. This secnd missed exam will be handled n a case by case basis at the discretin f the instructr. In the absence f acceptable dcumentatin, a grade f 0 will be assigned fr the secnd r subsequent missed exams. The Final Exam will be cmprehensive, cvering all material frm the whle semester. This exam can NOT be missed. All exam questins will be based n material discussed in class and assigned prblem sets. Tentative exam dates and chapters cvered fr each exam are given in the curse schedule. If yu arrive late fr an exam, yu will be NOT be allwed extra time fr the exam. All students must turn in the exam at the regular scheduled end f the exam. 2

T facilitate learning, lecture exams will be returned t the student. The Final Exam will nt be returned but can be reviewed by appintment with the instructr. By registering fr this class, each student agrees that the exams are the intellectual prperty f the instructr, Dr. Christa Diercksen, and may nt be sld, reprduced, shared, r used fr any purpse that wuld prvide assistance t students in future classes. The cntents f the exams are t be shared nly with individuals registered in this class (Spring 2014). Prblem Slving (20% f grade: 15% frm cmpletin/5% frm participatin) Fr every chapter, there will be assigned prblem slving exercises frm the textbk as well as additinal prblems and critical thinking exercises. The assigned prblems will be available thrugh Webcurses fr each chapter. Due dates fr the prblem sets can be fund belw in the curse schedule. Students may wrk tgether t cmplete the prblems, but each student must have their wn set f cmpleted prblems t turn in. Students may be called upn t wrk examples f the cmpleted prblems n the bard n the day the prblems are due. Yur prblem slving grade will cme frm demnstrated cmpletin f the prblems (nt necessarily crrect but COMPLETED) and participatin in the prblem slving with the class. Prblem sets will be cllected in class n the due date t scre fr cmpletin. Late prblem sets will NOT be accepted. If yu must miss class n a day prblems are due, yu may send an electrnic versin f yur answers t Dr. Diercksen by email attachment n later than the beginning f class n the due date (12:00 PM). Yu may als give yur cmpleted prblems t anther student t turn in fr yu. Yu will be given credit fr the cmpletin prtin f the grade but nt the participatin. All slutins fr all prblems will be psted in Webcurses after the due dates fr the prblem sets. Current Tpic in Genetics Presentatin (15% f grade) Each student will select a tpic f their chice cncerning a current genetics research tpic r mre general tpic in genetics fr further explratin. Students will create a shrt presentatin (Pwerpint, Prezi, etc.) which will be shared with ther students thrugh Webcurses. Suggested tpics will be prvided alng with further infrmatin cncerning the presentatin in a frthcming detailed rubric. The instructr must apprve the tpic befre a student begins their research. Final dates fr apprval will be annunced in class. The presentatin will be due the last day f regular class this semester, April 17, 2014, but may be turned in at any time befre that date. 3
