Ten reasons why study at Fulda University Fulda University of Applied Sciences (FUAS) is a practice-oriented university with strong links to business and industry. For its 6,600 students, the university is a compact, friendly community, where it is easy to make friends and where professors and staff are always approachable. Studying in small classes you will experience the individual support that you need. FUAS offers good quality education, funded by the state. That means for you: no tuition fees. FUAS graduates have excellent job opportunities on the German labour market as well as on the global labour market. You will study in an international environment: 15 % of the students come from abroad, from more than 90 countries. FUAS provides a broad range of study programmes especially designed for international students, par tly or totally taught in English. Services for Exchange Students Application If you wish to study at Fulda University of Applied Sciences for one or two semesters, please send your application to the International Office of Fulda University in time to meet the deadlines of December 1st (for the summer semester) or June 1st (for the winter semester). The orientation programme is meant to make your first semester in Fulda as stress-free as possible. The Orientation Week programme will be sent to you in advance. Tutors will help you take care of necessary formalities, introduce you to life in Fulda and provide friendly advice and support with any problems that may arise. Station Pick-Up International Office tutors will meet you at the railway station on the day you arrive in Fulda and take you to your residence hall or other accommodations. Help Finding Accommodations Exchange students can take advantage of special assistance in finding a place to live in Fulda. If you let us know before February 15 for the summer semester or September 1st for the winter semester, the International Office will find you a room in a residence hall or in a shared flat. All accommodation is close to the campus and to the city centre and costs between 220-270 per month for a room in a shared fat or 260-340 per month for a single apartment. Rooms are fully furnished and include bedding and kitchen utensils. Of course, you may do your own apartment-hunting in Fulda if you wish. www.hs-fulda.de/accommodation Buddy Programme The Buddy Programme pairs new international students with experienced German students. The buddy, an upper-semester student from the same academic department as the international student, helps to make your start into life and study in Fulda as smooth as possible. The programme lasts for one semester. International students need to register to be paired with a German buddy. www.hs-fulda.de/buddy Excursions The International Office organizes excursions for international students to places of historical and cultural interest in Germany. Excursions are offered each semester, for example a boat trip on the River Rhine, an outing to the classical Weimar of Goethe and Schiller, trips to Frankfurt or Berlin. www.hs-fulda.de/excursions Special Courses for International Students German Courses The university offers German courses during the semester for international students. Updated information can be found on the website of the Department of Social and Cultural Sciences or in the course catalogue for each semester, which is likewise posted on the Internet. You can also take the DSH German proficiency examination at the university. The university offers as well special DSH-preparation courses (4.5 months, 20 h/ week, 700 ) and intensive DSH trainings (3 weeks, 56 h, 140 ). In this training you will learn more about stereotypes, adapting to a new culture and the challenges of intercultural communication. The training helps to improve your understanding of the German mentality. International Summer University (ISU) The ISU is a 4-week programme in July/August. Fulda Food Market What You Need to Know... Visa Students with EU citizenship do not need a visa to enter Germany. Non-EU students have to apply for a visa at the German embassy in their home countries in order to study in Germany (except for citizens from Australia, South Korea or the U.S.A.). Upon receipt of your application, we will send you an official letter of invitation which will enable you to apply for a student visa. Please note that visa processing takes at least four weeks. After arriving in Fulda all non-eu students must register with the aliens office of the city of Fulda and apply for a residence permit within four weeks. The annual cost of this permit is 100. A student tutor from the International Office will accompany you. Health Insurance All students in Germany must have health insurance coverage in Germany. If you are a European student, your home country health insurance coverage may be valid in Germany. This must be documented by a special form from your home country health insurance scheme (European Health Insurance Card) which you must bring with you to Fulda. If you come from a country outside the European Union, you must take out German compulsory medical insurance for the duration of your studies at Fulda University of Applied Sciences. The monthly insurance fee is 80. Please be aware, that we cannot accept private health insurances or travel insurances. Tuition fee: no tuition fees Enrolment fee: approx. 230 per semester (special price for exchange students). This fee includes the ticket for public transportation in the city and within a 100 km radius around Fulda.
Living Expenses & Material Costs To cover the cost of living you should calculate between 600-700 per month. This amount includes rent, food, insurance and public transport. Of course, ultimately your cost of living depends on your individual standard of living. 250 for books and material costs per semester. Job Opportunities There are good job opportunities in the nearby Rhine- Main area, which is one of the strongest employment regions in Germany. Teaching assistantships can be offered to good students. Work Permit If you are a citizen of the EU, you may take up employment in Germany without any additional work permit. If you come from a country outside the European Union, you may seek employment in Germany, but you need a work permit. Fulda City and University The City of Fulda A historic city founded in the year 744, Fulda has a population today of 65,000. The University of Fulda Fulda University of Applied Sciences is a practice- oriented university with an international focus. Founded in 1974, the university encompasses, at present, eight academic departments with more than 40 study programmes, ca. 130 professors and 180 support staff. It has 6,600 students, including almost 1,000 international students. All study programmes are accredited and lead to an international bachelor s or master s degree. They are all based on the European Credit Transfer System (ECTS). The university offers a broad spectrum of academic and professional education with a special focus on»health, Nutrition and Food«.
