IB the Gateway to Higher Education & the World AN ACADEMIC PROGRAMME leading to an IB Diploma, the IB is offered at more than 2,450 schools worldwide. A RECOGNISED INDICATOR of academic excellence. The IB Diploma is awarded after examinations in the third year and is highly regarded by university admission officers worldwide. ONE OF THE BIGGEST IB SCHOOLS IN SCANDINAVIA. Malmö Borgarskola has offered the IB programme since 1994 with outstanding results. OUR WORLD CLASS RESULTS are due to our many years of experience in combination with highly-qualified teachers and strongly motivated students. Our staff participate in regular professional development seminars organised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation and several have been appointed as examiners. OUR GRADUATES nearly all continue to higher education, studying at top universities such as Oxford, Cambridge, London School of Economics, Imperial College, Durham, Warwick, St Andrews, Harvard, Yale, Handels Stockholm, as well as in medical schools in Sweden and abroad. OUR THREE YEAR PROGRAMME is divided into a pre-ib year which is the equivalent of year 10 in international schools or year one in the Swedish gymnasium system followed by two IB Diploma years where class sizes are around 20. 4 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 5

Pre-DP IB Diploma Programme LAYING THE GROUND FOR YOUR FUTURE SUCCESS The pre-ib is a one-year course prior to the actual IB Diploma Programme. Here students follow a course of study which is similar to the Social Science Programme in the Swedish system making it possible for them to change to another programme should they not wish to continue with the IB. The aim of pre-dp is to prepare students for the challenges of the diploma programme by developing academic and language skills, getting them ready to study a broad range of subjects in English. Subjects Hours First language, Swedish or English 100 Foreign language, English or Swedish 100 Foreign language, French, German or Spanish 80 History 70 Social Sciences 90 Theory of Knowledge 20 General Science Biology 85 Chemistry 55 Physics 50 Mathematics 115 Physical Education/Action 90 THE IB DIPLOMA IS WELL-REGARDED BY UNIVERSITIES WORLD WIDE The International Baccalaureate is a comprehensive and rigorous two-year curriculum, leading to an IB Diploma. The general objectives of the IB are to provide students with a balanced education to facilitate geographic and cultural mobility and to promote international understanding through shared academic excellence. The IB Diploma is well-regarded by universities worldwide. Malmö Borgarskola offers the following IB subjects: Group 1 Studies in language & literature: English, Swedish, Self-Taught (SL) Group 2 Language acquisition: English, French, German, Spanish Group 3 Individuals and Societies: Economics, History, Psychology, Business and Management, Global Politics Group 4 Experimental Sciences: Biology, Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Systems and Societies Group 5 Mathematics: Mathematics HL, Mathematics SL, Mathematical Studies SL Group 6 Electives: Theatre, or an additional subject from group 2, 3 or 4 Full course descriptions can be found at www. ib.malmoborgarskola.se. IB WORLD SCHOOL 6 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 7

What is the Diploma Programme? World Class Examination Results Conversion from IB grades to Swedish and Danish final grades Students choose six subjects from the groups above. Three subjects will be studied at Higher level and three at Standard level. At both Higher and Standard level each subject is graded on a scale of 1 to 7 where 7 is the maximum. The award of the diploma requires a minimum total of 24 points. Good Extended Essays and Theory of Knowledge Essays may give the student 3 bonus points and therefore the maximum score is 45 points. Students holding the diploma are accepted by universities worldwide. EXTENDED ESSAY is an essay of 4,000 words in an IB subject of the student s choice, providing an excellent opportunity to undertake original research and learn more about a topic of special interest to them. The essay is assessed by an external examiner. THEORY OF KNOWLEDGE (TOK) is a subject which aims to train students critical thinking. Issues from the fields of Logic, Ethics and Philosophy are discussed. TOK is graded in the form of an essay that is submitted and externally assessed and an internally assessed oral presentation. CREATIVITY, ACTIVITY AND SERVICE (CAS) aims to let you experience the importance of life outside school. Creativity and Activity should play an equal part with Service in the CAS programme. CAS should challenge the student and help them develop a spirit of discovery and self-reliance as well as encouraging new skills and interests and a sense of responsibility towards all members of the community. Outstanding IB Diploma scores are consistently achieved by our graduating students. Almost every year we have one or more students with a perfect score of 45 and several in the 40 plus range. 40 points in the IB Diploma corresponds to 20 points in the Swedish national system. 2016: - Our average 36.1 / World average 29-25% gained 40 or more / 5% worldwide - 56% awarded a distinguished pass of 36 points or more Year No. of Candidates Mean Score 1997-2004 57 (average) 36.0 (average) 2005 74 37.4 2006 66 36.5 2007 65 37.3 2008 67 36.0 2009 76 37.6 2010 74 36.2 2011 70 35.2 2012 79 34.8 2013 69 34.0 2014 104 34.6 2015 98 34.1 2016 95 36.1 IB SE DK 24 13.5 3.1 25 13.95 3.7 26 14.5 4.3 27 15.03 4.8 28 15.31 5.4 29 15.7 5.9 30 16.04 6.4 31 16.6 6.8 32 17.18 7.2 33 17.5 7.7 34 18.11 8.1 35 18.49 8.4 36 18.95 8.8 37 19.31 9.1 38 19.55 9.5 39 19.83 9.8 40 20.0 10.1 41 20.0 10.4 42 20.0 10.6 43 20.0 10.9 44 20.0 11.2 45 20.0 12.0 Styrelsen for International Uddannelse, 2010 Högskoleverket, 2010 Merit points in the Swedish system can be attained by choosing appropriate subject combinations ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE 8 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 9

Tell us about your time at Malmö Borgarskola Name: Patrick Lundgren Graduated: 2014 Currently: Cambridge Looking back, the choice of pursuing an IB education at Malmö Borgarskolan shouldn t have been as difficult as it seemed at the time. I now realize that it was one of the best decisions I have made in my life. The social environment here is one of great diversity and openness, the academic rigor is one that not only provides knowledge but also encourages critical thinking, reflection and self-discovery, and the global perspective is one that brings the entire world to your feet. Name: Henrik Fritzon Graduated: 2015 Currently: Copenhagen Business School As an IB student at Malmö Borgarskola you are given the tools, support and knowledge to be every bit as successful as you want to be. Teachers with a professional attitude and a modern teaching environment result in you get a top-notch education that will open doors for you both when you apply to university and later in your career. No matter where you want to live and work in the future the IB gives you a prestigious and internationally recognized diploma that makes sure that you have the world at your feet when you graduate. I have personally traveled to France to be a part of a short exchange with another school and been a part of a debating competition in Rome (where our IB team of course won), opportunities that are unrivaled by other schools and programs in both Sweden and internationally. I am currently studying at Copenhagen Business School where my background within the IB played an important part in me getting accepted since CBS values the international approach studies at the IB gives you. IB WORLD SCHOOL Name: Anja Cecilia Nilsson Graduated: 2011 Currently: Harvard University, Boston There is no question that Borgar, and the IB program, offer their students unparalleled avenues for academic success, from math and science Olympiads to international Model United Nations and European Youth Parliament sessions. That alone would convince me to apply to Borgar again if I had the chance. What I find more important though is that the IB program and the atmosphere of Borgarskolan leave you with a sense of independence and maturity in life outside of academics. The IB with time forces you to become more self-disciplined with your studies, to study for yourself (this sounds scary now, but all of us go through it!), which has been the best preparation possible for my studies at Harvard. Lastly, my friends and classmates in the IB with all their diverse interests, backgrounds and goals made me realize there are a million different paths you can take through life and I can t wait to see them all again at Christmas! Most importantly though, I now don t have to pay for a hotel when I travel to Canada, China, Singapore, England, Scotland or Denmark thanks to the IB. Name: Elvira Stridsberg Graduated: 2014 Currently: Northeastern University During my time in the IB programme at Borgar I gained an education that has proven to be well-renowned internationally, a discipline to study and stay on top of things which has helped me immensely in my university studies, along with friends and memories I will keep for the rest of my life. The combination of motivating teachers, motivated students and the atmosphere of a world class education really made my time at Borgar incredibly valuable and absolutely unforgettable. 10 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 11

BAHM WHAT IS THE PROGRAM OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION IN HOSPITALITY MANAGEMENT (BAHM)? BAHM is a program that follows both the Career-related Program(CP) of the IB and the Swedish Business and Administration Program (Handels- och Administrationsprogrammet). The CP is a framework of international education that incorporates the values of the IB into a unique programme addressing the needs of students engaged in career-related education. The programme leads to further/higher education, apprenticeships or employment. The BAHM curriculum BAHM students undertake a minimum of two IB Diploma Programme (DP) courses, a core consisting of four components and a career-related study. For BAHM students, DP courses provide the theoretical underpinning and academic rigour of the programme; the career-related study further supports the programme s academic strength and provides practical, realworld approaches to learning; and the CP core helps them to develop skills and competencies required for lifelong learning. Brand New Program! Partnership with Swiss Educational Group (SEG) MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA IS PARTNERING WITH SEG to ensure a top quality education. Hotel Institute Montreaux, which is part of SEG, will conduct some of the teaching for this program. Students will take part in a study trip to Switzerland to visit the Hotel Institute as part of the preparatory year. Throughout the entire course there will be close contact between Malmö Borgarskola and SEG. There will be a number of scholarships for students to conduct part of their training at the Hotel Institute Montreaux. IB WORLD SCHOOL ASSESSMENT AND EXAMS Students take written examinations at the end of their IB Diploma Programme courses, which are marked by external IB examiners. The school assesses the components of the Career-related core. 12 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 13

Tell us about your time at HIM Name: Frida Sjöblom Graduated: HIM: 2014 Currently: The Augustine, Prague IB WORLD SCHOOL To study in Switzerland was my best decision ever! You are surrounded by students from all over the world and the teachers are always there for you and they know you by name. You have the opportunity to first study in the school to thereafter go out for internships in world-renowned hotels; I was for example in Paris and St Lucia. I knew from before that the schools in Switzerland were prestigious and that has been proved to me through my job applications where all the well-known hotels know about HIM s quality. After graduating from HIM I decided to go to London to work for the famous The Connaught and now, less than 2 years later, I work as an Assistant Front Office Manager for the Augustine, a Luxury Collection Hotel in Prague. I can highly recommend everyone interested in the hotel industry to study at HIM in Switzerland 14 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 15

More than I million students By 2014 more than 1 million International Baccalaureate students will have participated in the IB Diploma Programme, and more than 120,000 Diploma Programme students will be entering university each year. Skilled thinkers The IB Diploma Programme is exceptionally strong in the areas of key cognitive strategies, problem solving, critical thinking, analysis, research and writing skills. Through the IB curriculum IB students develop the ability to interpret, analyse, think critically and present arguments. They learn to question and reflect on what they know. They also learn to research, write and present what they have learned. The IB assessment tasks evaluate students ability to think and process what they know rather than to simply memorise facts. Recent studies confirm that IB students perform well and have significantly higher grade point averages and higher graduation rates than students who did not complete the IB Diploma Programme. Scores on IB assessments are a significant predictor of performance at university. Universities around the world say IB students are well prepared In a survey of 150 university faculty and admissions staff from the UK, the IB Diploma Programme was rated higher than other qualifications based on the breadth of the curriculum, development of critical thinking, time-management and communication skills, and motivation of the students. 97% were satisfied the Diploma Programme prepares students for university. 96% favoured a broad curriculum of the type IB offers. Why do universities value IB students? IB students are prepared for academic success. IB students are more likely than others to enrol in and graduate from selective higher education institutions. Based on their experiences, IB students possess a broader range of skills that enhance their ability to adapt and contribute to university life. IB students demonstrate a level of emotional and intellectual maturity for managing the demands of challenging coursework and make meaningful contributions. They have extensive experience in doing independent research and presenting what they have learned through presentations, papers and other projects. They think critically and draw on diverse perspectives that reflect an international outlook. Participation in the IB Diploma Programme shows that students have excelled in multiple and diverse academic challenges and is a strong predictor for success in university. Diploma Programme students are well-rounded, multifaceted, multiskilled and have studied in depth. They have good time-management skills. They score higher than students in other national systems, and the IB score is worldwide the same measure. Hrilina Lock, undergraduate admissions manager, London School of Economics, UK IB is well known to us as excellent preparation. Success in an IB programme correlates well with success at Harvard. We are pleased to see the credential of the IB Diploma Programme on the transcript. Marlyn McGrath Lewis, assistant dean of admissions, Harvard University, USA IB WORLD SCHOOL 18 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 19

I ve been helped tremendously, not only with the application but with the process afterwards. Filling out an application may seem easy but you re bound to get stuck somewhere. Anytime I felt uncertain Lois or Stuart would clarify everything for me; from what grades to fill in to interpreting offers from the universities. I don t know what I would have done without their help and I m really grateful for it. Josefin Nilsson, IB graduate 2010, admitted to MA in Psychology and Linguistics at Edinburgh University Education UK Education USA UNIVERSITIES UK universities have an excellent reputation for providing a quality education recognised by employers around the world. This, in addition to the unique experience of student life in the UK, makes study here a firm favourite for Scandinavian students wishing to study abroad. We have a long tradition of preparing students for university studies in the UK with around 40 applicants each year. University admissions officers, with whom we have close contact, confirm the advantages of the IB Diploma; they know that its breadth and depth as well as emphasis on self discipline and planning give students an excellent basis for university studies. Past students report being very well prepared for the first year at university. Our Education UK centre is manned by Stuart Cameron and Lois Petersson, both from the UK and with many years experience of university guidance. Students can get to know the universities as they visit us throughout the year. At Malmö Borgarskola students will receive unique help with their applications and personal statements including interview practice. We are also the test centre for the south of Sweden for the entrance tests to top institutions such as Oxford, Camebridge, UCL, LSE and the medical schools. Our Education USA centre is part of a global network of more that 450 advisory centres supported by the US State Department. We offer accurate, comprehensive, objective and timely information about higher educational opportunities in the United States and provide specialist guidance to qualified individuals on how best to apply. During the year we are visited by a number of the universities so students have a chance to get to know them. The centre is staffed by our two professional advisors, Andreas Henninger and Carol Lundgren, who have extensive experience in placing our students. 20 Malmö Borgarskola MALMÖ BORGARSKOLA 21
