BENALMÁDENA - ANDALUSIA G The location Situated between two seas & two continents, Andalusia is the largest & most populated of Spain s natural regions. Its landscapes are widely & richly varied, including the Sierra Morena, the Guadalquivir Valley & the Bética Range. The climate, as varied as its geographical features, is Mediterranean, with mild winters & dry summers. The millenarian history of Andalusia has produced an immense artistic legacy. The Alhambra in Granada, the Mosque in Córdoba, the Giralda & the historic quarter of Seville, as well as the Dolmens of Antequera are all monumental landmarks recognized by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites. The finest moments of Andalusian artistic life throughout history are represented in the vast majority of Andalusian cities & towns. The brilliant Islamic, Renaissance & especially Baroque architecture of its most important buildings, castles, fortresses & monasteries spread over its surface, composing an enormous, transcendental patrimony. Málaga is the smallest of the Andalusian provinces with approximately 600.000 inhabitants. It has a privileged place at the outfall of the Guadalmedina River on the Mediterranean coast. Benalmádena is an attractive medium-sized town on the Costa del Sol with approximately 35.000 inhabitants. It s located on a hill at the foot of the Mijas Mountain Range only 18 km from Málaga city & 12 km from Málaga International Airport, which is just 3 hours flying time from most European capitals. Originally a sleepy Andalusian fishing village with beautiful whitewashed houses, Benalmádena has developed into a lively & animated town which retains its old charm & character. The town is small enough to provide a peaceful & secure environment, while large enough to offer good shops, hotels & restaurants, a large park, a modern sports center, shopping centers, cinemas, an art gallery, etc. Benalmádena offers a wide range of amenities for all ages, such as a library, the Arts & Exhibition Center, an amusement park, a cable car to the top of the Calamorro Mountain, a casino, 18 hole golf greens & the popular Puerto Marina de Benalmádena, which has become one of the favorite meeting places for young people for its dazzling nightlife, 978 mooring slips, a sailing school, an aquarium & a diving school. The geographical situation of Benalmádena enables the students to organize cultural excursions to the most important cities of Andalusia & to Morocco, which is just an hour away by ferry. Page 4

DISTANCES FROM BENALMÁDENA G MÁLAGA CITY SEVILLE CÓRDOBA GRANADA RONDA 18 km 240 km 175 km 130 km 85 km Climate The climate is Mediterranean, characterized by dry, hot summers & mild winters with irregular precipitation. The most distinctive characteristic of the Andalusian climate is the high number of annual hours of sunlight: the sun shines more than 3.000 hours per year. ADULT COURSES A FIRST DAY OF THE COURSE On the first day of the course, all students have to be at the school by 8:30 a.m. Non-beginner students will be given both written & oral tests. According to the test results they are placed in the appropriate class & a textbook is distributed. The lessons start at 9:00 a.m. & end at 1:30 p.m. We recommend that students take the ONLINE test before their starting date in order to avoid having to take the written test before class. Please see our starting dates for beginners. All other students elementary to advanced levels may start on any Monday. On arrival the students will receive a welcome pack containing maps, tourist information on Benalmádena & Andalusia, other useful information (emergency telephone numbers, bus/train timetables, local restaurant information, etc.) & full details of the weekly activities which are offered either free of charge or at low prices to enable them to participate in as many optional visits as possible. At 11:00 a.m. during the first break, our staff takes the new students for a tour of the school in order to get to know the premises & all of our facilities. TEACHERS Our team of teachers has been carefully selected after considering academic qualifications, previous teaching experience & positive attitudes. All our teachers are native speakers & university graduates with experience in teaching Spanish to foreigners. A large number of our teachers are also DELE examiners. We are an official examination center for the CERVANTES INSTITUTE S DELE Exam, which means our students are able to take the exam in the same center. The teachers duty is to understand the students objectives & help them to achieve them. Weekly meetings are held to plan & discuss each new program, monitor individual students progress & hold a general forum for new ideas & initiatives. TEACHING METHOD Our method allows students to develop the four basic skills: listening comprehension, speaking, reading & writing. The idea is to learn Spanish in a natural & spontaneous way, just as students have learned their mother tongue. Lessons are based on a combination of the latest textbooks & a wide range of supplementary resources. Our students speak Spanish right from the very first day, using it in typical real-life situations: the basic syllabus is supplemented by special exercises, such as role-play, situational dialogues & project work with the use of audio-visual facilities. THE CLASSES & LEVELS The classes are small, with an average of 7 students per group & a maximum of 10. This helps ensure personal attention & the opportunity for self-expression. Our program is based on 6 different levels, from beginners to advanced students, following the system approved by the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages After successfully completing the course, the students receive a certificate showing the length of the course & the language level achieved. Page 8

Colegio Maravillas offers a preparation course in our center in Benalmádena (Málaga) combined with work experience in a Spanish company for a period of at least 5, & maximum 24, weeks (only available for EU citizens), providing an opportunity to gain new experience, develop business skills & build an impressive CV. A Trainees study for a minimum of 2 weeks (20 lessons per week ). At the end of their studies they should have achieved an Intermediate level. In case the student has a lower level of the language he/she will have to extend the preparation course until reaching the correct level. The student then begins their internship. Placements are usually made in small- to medium-sized companies in Málaga & the Costa del Sol area (Torremolinos, Benalmádena etc.) mainly in the tourism sector. Here are some examples: Advertising, Marketing, Sales, Travel agencies, Real estate, Newspapers, Hotel administration, Guides associations, Car rentals, etc. The type of placement depends on the trainee s qualifications, education, experience & language ability. Conditions: Minimum 18 years of age Intermediate level of Spanish EU citizen Enrolled in a University or Higher Education College or in the Erasmus + program Application procedures: The trainee should send a comprehensive CV, Work Experience Application Form & a letter of introduction explaining what type of internship they would like, the reason & a short description of themselves. This helps us arrange a placement suited to the trainee s needs. The documents should be sent at least 8 weeks before the start of the course & in Spanish. We confirm the acceptance of the student in the work experience course & we ask the student to call us for a short interview & to discuss his/her needs & options available. ACCOMMODATION G All housing will be reserved for you from the Sunday prior to the start of the course to the Saturday (recommended) or Sunday after the end of the course. Additional nights before or after the course may be booked at extra charge. For certain categories of accommodation & during the peak season early booking is recommended. Final dates of arrivals & departure should be sent with the registration form & reconfirmed to us, together with the travel details, not later than 2 weeks before the start of the course. HOST FAMILIES Staying with a host family is an interesting alternative to staying in an apartment or a hotel and, moreover, offers an excellent opportunity to get to know the Spanish lifestyle. What has been learned in the lessons can be practiced at home. Most of our host families live within walking distance of the school, others live at 10 to 15 minutes bus ride. & the host families show students the way from home to the school. Students (adults) who select homestay accommodation should be prepared to use public transportation by bus. Students may not cancel the accommodation reserved due to the distance from the school. We arrange the stay in carefully selected host families on either a single room or shared basis with breakfast or half board (breakfast & dinner). Half board basis is recommended for stays longer than 2 weeks. Keep in mind the family s kitchen will not be at the student s disposal. Before a host family joins Colegio Maravillas, the Accommodation Officer makes a very detailed inspection. A student can therefore be confident that his Spanish hosts will be fully briefed about what they are expected to provide. Students should be advised that it is a common courtesy to inform the family should they not return home for dinner or if they are planning to be late in the evening. Students should also be prepared to make their bed and, from time to time, wash their own clothes, prepare their own meals or eat evening meals at different times that they are used to in their home country. The host family will provide the students with bed linens & bath towels. They will also wash the students clothes once a week. The use of the family phone is not allowed without first receiving permission from the host. Incoming calls are welcome but the participants must be very considerate about the length & time of the calls. Unless otherwise requested, we ensure that the students do not share a family with others of the same native tongue, allowing a maximum of 3 students of different nationalities (Some families with large & comfortable houses might receive up to 4 students). For students seeking a more independent atmosphere, such as couples or someone with special requirements, dietary needs, etc. we recommend hotel or apartment accommodation. Page 22
