IMPORTANT NOTES Students in the Non Licensure program are required to have at least 10 of their courses be a course with an SPE prefix. Additionally, you can take any 500 level SPE course except the pre practicums, practicums, and seminars courses. If you are enrolled in a combined M.S.Ed. / Ed.S. degree program, you must be enrolled in courses every semester and be formally accepted into both degree programs. Please see admissions for additional information. * and ** = Classes must be taken concurrently. *** = NEED TO HAVE ACCESS TO LEARNERS TO TEST. EXT 099 () needs to be completed prior to enrolling in an online or hybrid course. If part of a weekend class is cancelled due to weather, the class will be held on Sunday of that weekend. Dates and/or course offerings and/or course format (weekends/online) are subject to change. Several courses are offered on Sunday and weeknights. Weekend = Friday 5 pm 9 pm; Saturday/Sunday 8:30 am 4:30 pm. Attendance Policy For every hour of class that is missed, two points are subtracted from the final grade. A student may not enroll in a practicum until all required MTELS have been passed and all program requirements have been met. The practicum in the moderate or severe special needs program is a year-long practicum (August/September to June). The final grade will not be recorded until the end of the spring semester. Students in the M.S.Ed. / Ed.S. degree program in Special Education can begin with any 500 level course except the pre practicum, practicum or seminar course. A student needs to have enrolled and completed SPE 554 (spring course) and SPE 555 (summer course) in order to enroll in a practicum. Both of these courses are for 0 credit and a grade is either pass or fail. A student needs a grade of 'pass' in both courses to enroll in the practicum. To qualify for the scholarship or Stafford loan, a student must take at least 2 courses every semester. All courses are, unless otherwise noted. Codes: Section 20, 21 East Longmeadow; Section 30, 31 Concord; Section 40 Sturbridge, Section Z Online, Section H Hybrid (H1 East Longmeadow; H2 Concord, H 3 Sturbridge). Please note: Section 24, 25, 34 and 35 are courses only for off-site programs and only employees for these programs can enroll in these course sections. Classes may be held on computer based testing MTEL dates. Students are not exempt from BPU classes on computer based testing MTEL dates. Please plan your test dates accordingly. The student must earn grades of B or better in all courses in the program. If a student earns a B- in a course, the student must pay and retake this course and receive a B or better. A grade of C+ or below will cause an automatic withdrawal from the program. The student must pass the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) prior to entering practicum. To earn a license in Moderate Disabilities (PreK 8 and 5 12), there are three required MTEL sections: Communication & Literacy, General Curriculum (multi subject and math), and Foundations of Reading. For Moderate 5 12, certain content areas approved by DESE can be substituted for General Curriculum. Please see the MTEL folder in the SPED Community Group. To earn a license in Severe Disabilities PreK 12, there are two required MTEL sections: Communication & Literacy and General Curriculum (multi subject and math). It is the student s responsibility to register for the tests and to be aware of registration deadlines, appropriate tests, and rules of test participation. Classes may be held on computer based testing MTEL dates. Students are not exempt from BPU classes on computer based testing MTEL dates. Please plan your test dates accordingly. The MTEL Communication and Literacy should be taken upon admission to the graduate program in special education (if not taken at an earlier time). This is a test of basic college level reading and writing. For a fall practicum placement, the May MTEL administration is the last one that will be considered. Because of the lateness of the May administration score report date (mid-june), September placement is NOT guaranteed. (If a spring placement is being utilized as an add-on license, the September MTEL administration is the last one that will be considered). A student will be eligible for a pre practicum/practicum placement when s/he has passed all required components of the MTEL, holds a 3.0 cum grade point average, has a grade of B or better in every course, and has completed the required coursework. There is an option to delay practicum (pending no DESE regulation changes) or to complete the non licensure program if these requirements are not met. A student enrolled in the non licensure program in special education does NOT have to pass the MTELS. A student in this program does NOT earn a license as a special education public school teacher issued by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. A student may opt to complete the program in one year; however, a student completing the program in one year must complete 15 credits in the summer, 12 credits in the fall and 12 credits in the spring semester. To be eligible for a practicum placement in the fall of a one year program of study, the student must pass all required MTELS prior to starting the practicum and must also complete the zero-credit pre-practicum seminar during the summer semester. Students seeking this option should connect with Dr. Liz Fleming, Dean and Program Director, to verify a planned schedule of courses. A student needs to be enrolled at the time of admission for this one year option. Graduate students are not allowed to audit graduate courses. However, do know that SPE 544 and SPE 525 have special conditions. Please see advisor for details. All courses need to be completed by the time the student completes the practicum. If you are enrolled in a combined M.S.Ed / Ed.S. degree program, you must be accepted in both degree programs and enrolled in courses every semester if you are combining courses and degree. Please see admissions for additional information. Each student must check his/her BPU Google email account on a daily basis. All information about the School is posted in the School of Education Group in Canvas. Please check weekly. As of July 1, 2014, each student in a licensure program will be required to complete SPE 548 or its equivalent in order to seek licensure. The pre-practicum/practicum is a full-time (September June) assignment and no other day jobs are possible during this time period. Students must complete a CORI (Criminal Offense Records Investigation) and any other requirements as mandated by a school district. Students must begin this experience the end of August/first week of September (the first day of the school year for teachers). There are no exceptions. Requirements in the special education graduate program are subject to modification due to changes as stipulated by Bay Path University and/or recommendations from the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Please see graduate catalog for refund policy and all university/program policies. Fall 2017 SPED Schedule Working Draft 9.25.17 Bay Path University Page 15
