Poll Everywhere Blackboard Learn Building Block System Administrator Guide Version 1.0.4 This guide is intended for Blackboard System Administrators and describes how to install and configure the Poll Everywhere Building Block. This guide is intended for use with Blackboard Learn Release 9.1. Note that the installation screens may appear slightly different from your instance, depending on browser, Service Pack and theme. Those familiar with installing Building Blocks should simply upload the.war file and make it available and then proceed to the Configuration section of this document. Installation Download.WAR File Download the Poll Everywhere Building Block from: http://www.polleverywhere.com/blackboard.war Upload.WAR File Poll Everywhere distributes a Blackboard Building Block using the same packaging as all other Building Blocks. The first step is for a Blackboard System Administrator to upload the.war file. From the System Admin tab, select Building Blocks from the Building Blocks section. This selection brings up the Building Blocks menu, from which select Installed Tools. This menu brings up a list of installed tools. From the upper-left, click on Upload Building Blocks. Version 1.0.4 2

This selection brings up a file browser. Choose the PollEverywhere-Bb9-1.0.4.war file you downloaded. Once the upload is complete, locate the row in the Installed Tools list with the Poll Everywhere entry and make the Building Block available by selecting Available from the drop-down list in the Availability column or from the context menu. Note: A rolling restart will need to be performed if there are multiple app servers. This completes the installation process. Before you can proceed to the next step and configure the Building Block, you will need to contact your Account Manager for credentials. You can also request them via email by clicking on the link under the Request LTI Credentials section of the settings page. Version 1.0.4 3

Configuration The Building Block must be installed before it can be configured and it must be configured before it will send information to Poll Everywhere. Begin configuration by locating the row in the Installed Tools list with the Poll Everywhere entry and clicking on the Settings button (or from the context menu). This selection will bring up the configuration menu page. The first step is to specify the connection to Poll Everywhere. In order to complete the connection, you will need a set of LTI credentials from Poll Everywhere. If these have not been sent to you already, you can request them via email by clicking on the link under the Request LTI Credentials section of the settings page. Entering IMS LTI Credentials This selection brings up the LTI connection form where you enter IMS LTI credentials you receive from Poll Everywhere. These are similar to the credentials you may receive from other vendors and use under the LTI Tool Providers section of the Building Blocks menus. Enter the credentials and click Save. Note: Should you need to diagnose technical issues with Poll Everywhere, this page includes a Save and Validate button in the upper-right-hand corner. Version 1.0.4 4

The test shows what LTI values are being sent to Poll Everywhere. Clicking on Submit will only function properly if you have a Poll Everywhere account attached to the institutional license. Mapping Blackboard Roles to Poll Everywhere Roles Having entered the connection data, the next step is to map Blackboard Course roles to IMS LTI / Poll Everywhere roles. Blackboard allows users to be assigned different roles in different contexts. Each member of a course has a role in that course such as instructor, teaching assistant, student, etc. The Building Block allows course members to sign-on to Poll Everywhere by clicking on a Tool link. The IMS LTI role used in the sign-on, whether Instructor or Learner, is determined by this mapping page. Operational Settings This Building Block allows Poll Everywhere to request course or roster information the Building Block. Course information includes the course ID and title. Roster information includes various user information. Version 1.0.4 5

Some of the information is available to Poll Everywhere if the system administrator checks the associated box. Other information needs both the system admin to check the box and the user to set their personal information privacy information to allow the data to be shared. Version 1.0.4 6

Logging The Building Block logs requests from Poll Everywhere for course and roster information as well as user s single sign-on calls to Poll Everywhere. The logs are generated daily and reside under the normal Blackboard logs directory such as: /usr/local/blackboard/logs/poll Everywhere Making Tools Available by Default As an administrator, you control which Building Block Tools are available at all as well as which are available or not, be default, in Courses and Organizations. These options can be set using the Tools page off the System Admin tab in the same manner as you do for any other Blackboard Tools. Version 1.0.4 7

Using Tools in Courses There is a Tool that instructions and students can use to sign into Poll Everywhere. This tool will call Poll Everywhere following the LTI convention. The user will go through a pairing process so that they will not be challenged when invoking Poll Everywhere. Single Sign On to Poll Everywhere Course Tool Course members use this Tool to invoke Poll Everywhere. If you do not see this Tool in a Course, be certain the Blackboard System Admin has made the Tool available and that the Course Management / Customization / Tool Availability has the Poll Everywhere SSO row checked. Poll Everywhere creates an account for the LMS user, who will not be challenged to log in. Note that the System Administrator maps which Course roles map to which Poll Everywhere roles. Blackboard Course Tools Version 1.0.4 8

Integration Features Authorization and Roster Import The primary function of the Poll Everywhere tool is to authorize Poll Everywhere to perform course roster imports and gradebook exports on behalf of the user. A user only needs to use the Poll Everywhere tool as pictured in the Blackboard Course Tools image for the initial authorization handshake. Once users click the Poll Everywhere tool, they will be redirected to polleverywhere.com/lms/blackboard/roster_imports/new and will be presented with the following screen: Poll Everywhere Course Roster Import Now that users have successfully authorized Poll Everywhere to interact with their Blackboard account, they can return to this screen at any time from their Blackboard course tools, visiting polleverywhere.com/lms/blackboard/roster_imports/new, or through polleverywhere.com/participants (Add Participants > Connect to LMS). From the Poll Everywhere Course Roster Import screen, the user can select a course roster to import. The default password is given to any students who do not have existing Poll Everywhere accounts. Note that only students with email addresses will be imported. Version 1.0.4 9

Gradebook Export In order to export grades from Poll Everywhere to Blackboard, a gradebook report in Poll Everywhere must be created first. Refer to our blog post for more information on creating gradebook reports: polleverywhere.com/blog/whats-in-a-gradebook. Once your report is created, you can find the link Export to Blackboard in the lower right hand corner of the page. Follow the instructions presented on the screen Poll Everywhere will then create a new assignment for your course which you can then view in your course s Blackboard gradebook. Version 1.0.4 10
