A Message from the Chancellor Dr. Michael Joseph Chancellor I take this opportunity to congratulate all the graduands and also wish them a successful future in the world of work, innovation and progress. Their parents, relatives, guardians and sponsors deserve praise for their contribution in seeing these young people through their education and success. The graduands should henceforth take the responsibility of diligently driving the wheel of development in Kenya and the world at large. The knowledge and skills attained at Maseno University must be applied creatively to make the world a much better place than you found it. T h e d e g re e s, d i p l o ma s a n d certificates you receive today are to be your reminder of the role you need to play as an actor in giving back to society. In the 16th Graduation Ceremony, we have a total of 3016 graduands. It means that this number of newly qualified man and womanpower is joining the pool of human capital that we have in this country and indeed in the world. I say in the world we strive to shore up Maseno University into world-class standards. In this way the community shall hold you up for emulation and will appreciate your University as one that passes out professionals worthy of the Degrees to be Conferred and the Diplomas and Certificates to be Awarded. As a nation, we expect you to understand that the sacrifices made towards your education were made with the dream that you would then avail yourself and your acquired skills for service. Nyabundi Vice-Chancellor, PhD, OGW On behalf of the University and on my own behalf I welcome you all to the 16th Graduation Ceremony of Maseno University. On this occasion, I shall also be honored by being Installed by the Chancellor, Dr. Michael Joseph, as the 3rd Vice-chancellor of this great institution. The graduands of 2016 will be the first cohort of students that will graduate under my stewardship as the Vice-Chancellor. They will therefore remain in my memory as the group of students that left the University at the very beginning of my tenure as Vice- The Deputy ViceChancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Mary Kipsat during an Environmental Awareness and Tree Planting Day at Maseno University in June 2016. I therefore, heartily congratulate all the 3016 graduands on their success. May I extend the same accolades to their parents and sponsors for the efforts they put in to see to it that these graduands successfully go through their training in Maseno. As a University, we remain dedicated to offering quality training for the benefit of this great nation and the world. I have therefore noted with great pleasure that in Maseno all students graduating attain a Degree with Information Technology (IT) as an inbuilt component. This really is the way to go. With the quality training you have received here, I therefore charge you to join the workforce, be it in employment or as an employer with the aim of adding value to products and services that we offer as a country. Recognition must be accorded to Senate and faculty who taught, tested and supervised their work. The University and administrative staff deserve salutation as well for their contribution in providing the necessary leadership in the day to day running of the University. Due to the support of all those I have mentioned, Maseno University has not only continued to offer training but has indeed grown to become a real Fountain of Excellence. Environmental Awareness & Tree Planting Day Maseno University s School of Environment and Earth Sciences (SEES) recently organized an Environmental Awareness and Tree Planting Day. Prof. Joseph Chacha,, Partnerships, Research and Innovation led members of staff and the community in the tree planting exercise. Prof. Chacha who read a speech on behalf of the ViceChancellor commended the Environmental Sustainability Committee (ESC) for taking the lead in the tree planting. I would like to thank the ESC for their commitment in ensuring that the University community is sensitized on the need to protect our environment by means of reforestation.

B Reduction of Flood Risk in Bunyala KISUMU SHOW Varsity clinches Award for Best Stand at Kisumu A.S.K Regional Show The University bagged the prestigious award following the outstanding organization of its exhibits and its demonstration of the ability to creatively incorporate technology in agriculture. The University also demonstrated ability to satisfactorily fashion its products in tandem with this year s theme, which was Enhancing Technology in Agriculture and Industry for Food Security and National Growth. High School students mentorship program Maseno University has an elaborate program for mentoring High School students by encouraging academic Schools and Departments to always be ready to receive High School students for motivational talks and demonstrations of their capacities and experties.this is meant to revitalize the students ambitions of working hard to gain entry into university. Over the years, Maseno University has received numerous groups of High School students to go through the mentorship program. The University is highly encouraged by the positive reports of improved students performance in those schools that have come calling. Maseno ranked 5th by Webometrics Workshop on Sustainable Use of Water Resources An International Workshop on Sustainable Use Of Water Resources recently organized by Maseno University attracted Water experts from around the African continent. The workshop aimed at establishing a strong regional network of experts in the fields of climate change, integrated water management, modeling methods, sanitary engineering, urban water supply, biodiversity, micro and macro pollutants, floods and droughts control, sewer treatments and protection of inland and coastal waters. The theme of the workshop was Sustainable Use of Water Resources and the major thematic areas addressed at the workshop were: Water and agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas, Water in urban environment, aquatic ecosystems, Water and health, Water and energy and Water in a global world. Maseno University launched a technical project on Flood Disaster Risk Reduction that is to be implemented in Bunyala, Busia County. The project was launched in May 2016. T h e p ro j e c t w h i c h w i l l b e implemented by Maseno University is funded by African Development Bank and will run for a period of 24 months at a cost of Kshs. 100 Million. It is to enhance the capacity of Busia County Government institutions, community organizations and other stakeholders to better manage risks and disasters associated with floods in the Budalangi area of Western Kenya and to reduce the impact of floods on local households and communities. Prof. Mathews Dida, Dean School of Agriculture at the Tom Mboya University College (a Constituent of Maseno University), speaking during the launch said that the region is prone to flooding and reiterated the University s support of the project because of its potential to improve livelihoods of the local community. I am hopeful that the project s success will bring focus to other areas that are also affected by floods for instance, the Nyando Basin, he said. The project objectives are to develop a system for flood hazard and vulnerability assessment mapping to provide information for enhanced flood risk, and disaster management in Busia County; integrate flood Indigenous Traditional Knowledge (ITK) into technical flood disaster forecasting and early warning systems for County level planning. Prof. Joseph Chacha,, Patnerships, Research and Innovation on behalf of the Prof. Julius O. Nyabundi, Vice-Chancellor, Maseno University, officially opened the workshop that hosted experts from more than ten universities in Africa. As a researcher, it is important to note that this occasion is very appropriate to our institution. This workshop should be made an annual event and Maseno University is willing to partner with the team in the organization of the subsequent workshops, he said. Maseno University organized the workshop which was hosted by the Excellent Center for Development Cooperation in Sustainable Water in Developing Countries (EXCEED-SWINDON). Since the year 2009, more than 29 Universities spread all over the world have come together to form a collaborative organization called EXCEED-SWINDON. The collaboration is headquartered at the Technical University of Braunschweig (TBU) in Germany which is a German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) seeded network that has spread to several countries. Specifically, the group intends to contribute in capacity building and knowledge transfer in sustainable water management through research and education with the aim of having a pool of water technology experts for the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These objectives are also in harmony with the entire 5th item of the Kenya s Vision 2030 (KV 2030) development program. The collaboration is organized into regional levels comprising of the European, the Middle-East and North Africa, the Asian, Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), Latin America, and the North America hubs. Maseno University has once again secured a place among top five institutions of higher learning in the country that have embraced and incorporated technology in generation and dissemination of knowledge. The ranking results released late last month by Webometrics places the University fifth nationally, and 109th on the continent. The web indicators used by Cybermetrics Lab to arrive at the rankings include Presence, which considers the total number of web pages affiliated with the University; Openness, which examines the transparency of raw data from Google Scholar citations; Excellence, entailing top 10 % of frequently cited papers by discipline; and Impact. Maseno has been among the top rated universities in Kenya in the last few years, a mark that demonstrates an improvement in the University s web activity and visibility.

A Top in PRSK students competition Public Relations Society of Kenya (PRSK) in September 2016 held its Inaugural Inter-University Public Relations boot camp in which Maseno University emerged the best at St Paul s University s Limuru Campus. Students from various public and private universities attending the event were engaged in training and competitive learning activities on which they were expected to show their understanding of Public Relations (PR) as a career. The host, St Paul s University emerged third in the competition while Moi settled for the second position. The others that attended were Daystar, Multimedia, Maasai Mara, Zetech and Karatina Universities. PRSK Vice Chairperson, Ms. Sylvia Mwichuli said the event shall be held annually across universities offering training in the sector and institutions emerging the best shall be awarded the privilege to host the competitions. It is the first camp and the winners shall host successive competitions so as to enable students understand their career and how to enhance professionalism even before getting into the job market, she said. She said the competition is positive and urged all universities offering PR as a course to take it seriously as those who had showed up had tapped lifetime Partnership with the National Research University-Moscow Maseno University is in the process of developing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Higher School of Economics at the National Research University, Moscow. During a courtesy call to the ViceChancellor, a team from the National Research University-Moscow expressed their interest in fostering a partnership with Maseno University. Maseno Communication and Media Technology Don, Dr. Charles Nyambuga, said he had been impressed by the outstanding performance his students portrayed during the competition and attributed the pioneer championship to proper packaging of Public Relations and Media Studies which gave Maseno students an edge over others. We are proud to have our students emerging the best in the first PRSK student s camp and we look forward to the forthcoming one which we will host next year, said Dr. Nyambuga. explained that there is a large number of students enrolling into their University from Africa and especially Kenya. Prof. Muhoma welcomed the idea of fostering the partnership, saying that there is need for the collaboration which will be multidisciplinary.
