EDUCATIONAL TECHNOLOGY WORKSHOPS CREATING ASSESSEMENT IN MOODLE Facilitators: Joseph Blankson (j-blankson), Chandra Dunbar (c-dunbar), Sharyn Zembower (s-zembower) TESTS AND QUIZZES The Quiz activity module allows the instructor to create quizzes consisting of different question types. These questions are saved in a Question bank and may be re-used within courses and between courses. Creating a new quiz is a two-step process. The first step involves creating the quiz activity and setting options which specify the rules for interacting with the quiz. The second step involves adding questions to the quiz. STEP 1: Creating the quiz settings; 1. Click Turn editing on 2. Scroll to the section of course where the Quiz is to be added 3. Click Add an activity or resource 4. Select Quiz 5. Click Add 6. Enter Name for the quiz 7. Provide Description (instructions, purpose or background of quiz) 8. Check box if you want to display description on course page 9. Click Expand all to view all settings (upper right corner) 10. Timing Open the quiz: Specify times when quiz is accessible for students to make attempts. Close the quiz: After closing time students will not be able to start new attempts Time limit: Specify time limit (by defaults do not have a time limit) When time expires: Control what happens if the student fails to submit their quiz before time expires ( Select Open attempts are submitted automatically to avoid students losing all their attempts) 1

11. Grade Grade category: Select Grade category (if your Gradebook is set up) Attempts allowed: Select the of multiple attempts allowed Grading Method. When multiple attempts are allowed, there are different ways you can use the grades to calculate the student's final grade for the quiz; Highest, Average, First and Last attempts 12. Layout Question order: Choose whether questions should be shuffled with each new quiz attempt. New page: Choose how many questions to display per page Navigation method: Choose Free to allow students to go back to previous questions or skip to a later one. Choose Sequential to force students to progress without being able to move back and forth 13. Question behavior Shuffle within questions: To randomly shuffle questions each time a student attempts the quiz, select either Yes/No How questions behave: Select an option for questions behavior from the drop down menu o Adaptive Allows students to have multiple attempts at question Adaptive mode (no penalties) same as adaptive with no penalties o Deferred feedback students must enter an answer to each question must submit entire quiz before anything is graded or feedback provided o Immediate feedback student can submit response immediately during the quiz attempt and get it graded (one response and cannot change later) o Interactive mode with multiple tries Student is allowed to Try again after submitting a response and being provided with a feedback o Manual grading used for essay questions 2

Each attempt builds on the last: If multiple attempts are allow and if setting is set to YES, each new attempt will contain results of previous attempts. 14. Review options: Select review options during, immediate later and after the attempt. (This section controls what information students will be shown) These options control what information students can see when they review a quiz attempt or look at the quiz report; During the attempt: Shown during the attempt Immediately after the attempt: Within two minutes of the student clicking submit all and finish Later, while the quiz is still open: After two minutes, but before the close date After the quiz is closed. As implied 15. Display Show the user s picture: Select Yes /No to show/hide student s profile picture on-screen during the attempt for proctoring purposes. Decimal places in grades: Select the number of digits to show after decimal point when displaying student grades 16. Add Extra Restrictions on attempts - OPTIONAL (password, network address, delay between attempts) 3

Require password: If password is specified, students must enter password before they are allowed to make attempt Require network address: (optional) To restrict quiz to particular LAN Enforce delay between attempts: Set time between first and second attempt of a quiz Browser security: Determine way to restrict student cheating 17. Overall feedback Overall feedback is shown to a student after completing an attempt 18. Click Save and return to course STEP 2: Adding questions to a Quiz 1. Click quiz name on home page 2. Click Edit quiz button or Locate Administration Block Click Quiz Administration Click Edit quiz To create a new question 3. Click Add a question button 4. Choose question type to add 5. Click Next 6. Select Category 7. Fill in the question form and give a grade to the correct answer 8. Click Save changes You can continue adding questions this way, clicking the Add a question button each time. Choose a pre-made question (question banks) 4

If you already have questions made they can be added by; 1. Clicking the arrows next to them in the question bank or 2. Checking all boxes and then clicking Add to quiz button Assigning Points to questions 1. Click Name of quiz on course page 2. Locate Administration Block 3. Click Quiz Administration 4. Click Edit quiz 5. Change number in the box to set how many points each question is worth 6. To change the maximum grade, change the number in the box at the top of the quiz (The default is one point per question and 100.00 maximum grades). Changing the order of questions 1. Click Order and paging tab (top) 2. Enter a number in-between the range of the questions where the question is to appear 3. Click Reorder questions button Previewing a finished Quiz You can preview individual questions; 1. Click magnifying glass icon. To preview the whole quiz; 2. Click on Name of quiz 3. Locate Administration Block 4. Click Quiz Administration 5

5. Click Preview The quiz works like a real quiz so you can see your grades and any feedback for correct/incorrect answers just as a student would see them. Setting Up Question Pools Categories To create question categories; 1. Locate Administration block 2. Click Course Administration 3. Click Question bank 4. Select Categories 5. Choose the parent category 6. Type the name of your new question category 7. Click the Add Category button 8. Repeat for all categories Managing your Categories Deleting Categories Categories can also be created or deleted at will. However, if you try to delete a category containing questions, then you will be asked to specify another category to move them to. You cannot delete or move the last category in any context, there must always be one category in a context. Using Arrow icons for Moving Categories o Use up/down arrow icons to change the order in which category 'peers' are displayed o Use up/down icons to move a top-level category between contexts o Use right arrow icon to move a category to be a child category of the category listed immediately above it. o The left arrow icon to move a category up one category level 6

Creating quiz questions for the Categories TRUE/FALSE QUESTION 1. Locate the Administration block 2. Click Course administration 3. Click Question bank 4. Select Questions 5. Select a category from the drop down menu 6. Click the Create a new question button 7. Choose a True/False and click Next 8. Select the question bank category 9. Give the question a descriptive name 10. Enter a question in the 'question text' field. 11. Set the 'default question grade' (i.e. the maximum number of marks for this question). 12. Add general feedback (optional) 13. Select the correct answer - true or false. 14. Finally, provide feedback for each of the answers 'true' and 'false'. 15. Click 'Save changes' to add the question to the category. 7
