Early Screening Inventory-Revised (ESI-R) Enduring Understanding The Early Screening Inventory-Revised is developmental screening that is administered to all Sure Start students within 45 days of enrollment, it is assist with identify children who may need assistance to perform successfully in school. Essential Question(s) 1. What is the Early Screening Inventory-Revised? 2. What is the purpose of ESI-R? 3. How do administer the screening and use the results? Outcomes By the end of the session, participants will have: Received an overview of the Early Screening Inventory-Revised. Discussed and practiced administration and scoring for the ESI-R. Set Up Have all files downloaded to the desktop or a DVD in advance. This includes the power point presentation, and all references used during this training. Rationale the internet may not be available from the work station you are using during this training. Check the videos embedded on specific slides to assure they play properly and the volume is adjusted appropriately. Make ALL copies See Handout Section of this document. Set up the room to assure your audience can work with an elbow partner and in a small group. On the table, have the blank copy paper, highlighters, markers, stickers and poster paper. You will need to determine how you will distribute copies throughout the training depending on the size of your group. You will need to set up a Parking Lot at the front of the room. Participants will: Understand the Early Screening Inventory-Revised, it s purpose and how to administer the developmental screening to their students. 2 2 minutes Key Points The Sure Start Program Standards require that students receive medical, dental and educational/developmental screenings. The medical and dental screenings are completed the respective medical and dental facilities with hear, vision, height and weight completed by the school nurse. The educational screening is to be completed by the Sure Start teacher and the adopted screening tool is the Early Screening Inventory-Revised. Slide Number Presenter Time Script (Notes in PPT) Resources Transition Slide 3 0 minutes DoDEA Sure Start Programs use the Early Screening Inventory-Revised as the developmental screening tool to identify children who may need further evaluation. 4 5 minutes The ESI-R is a standardized assessment/screening with a script for administration. It is important to keep a light atmosphere to help students feel comfortable, but it is also important to ensure that teacher do not coach children and administer the screening as designed so that scoring is valid. The screening helps identify children who may need assistance to perform successfully in school and enables teachers to seek assistance for interventions sooner. It is NOT a readiness or skills assessment, nor an IQ test, nor an entrance exam. ESI-R takes about 15-20 minutes per student to administer. Completed within 45 days of enrollment. **Please note that the CSC process at your school will probably require additional documentation before a referral can be made. Location is not specific but should be in a quiet environment without distractions if possible. The screening usually takes about 15-20 minutes The sequence should be in the order it occurs in the manual Instructions may be repeated except where otherwise noted If a child refuses, the item can be readministered later in the session. Slide Number Presenter Time Script (Notes in PPT) Resources Participants will need the ESI-R Examiner s Manual and the materials from the kit to practice with one another. 7 40 minutes Each participant team will need one set of handouts and materials: ESI-P blank form ESI-K blank form Parent Questionnaire (sample/reference) ESI-R Examiner s Manual Materials (blocks, ball, button, etc.) Allow participants to practice administration of the ESI-P & ESI-K using script in the manual. Once they have been able to administer the screening a few times they will be able to use the script on the score sheet. HO: ESI-P Blank form, ESI-K blank form, Parent questionnaire, Tips and Suggestions One participant can administer the ESI-P and switch roles for the ESI-K Time 5 minutes Review Learner Outcomes 8 5 minutes Participants will: Understand the Early Screening Inventory-Revised, its purpose and how to administer the developmental screening to their students. The ESI-R is the developmental screening tool used in our Sure Start programs for identify students who may need additional support or referral.
