Activity Students will cmplete the Wrk Imprtance Prfiler n the Califrnia CareerZne (CareerZne) and identify their three mst imprtant wrk values. Students will then participate in a class discussin and reflect n ccupatins that may match their values. Getting Ready Preview the start-up vide (link in Materials sectin) G t the CareerZne, sign in r create an accunt, and then cmplete the Wrk Imprtance Prfiler (link in Materials sectin). Review the Califrnia CareerZne Accunt Setup Instructr Ntes and the Califrnia CareerZne Student Accunt Setup t create a new accunt. Lessn Prcedures Yu d nt need an accunt t d this activity. Yu d need an accunt t save the Wrk Imprtance Prfiler results. 1. Intrduce the lessn by shwing the start-up vide (link in Materials sectin) and cnfirm students understand what t expect. Or yu can intrduce the lessn withut the vide by describing the tpic and activity. 2. Explain that identifying and understanding persnal wrk values is a very imprtant part f deciding what career t pursue because wrk values are yur beliefs abut what is right r wrng, desirable r undesirable, ethical r unethical, etc. Because values are an imprtant part f wh yu are, it is imprtant t take them int cnsideratin when career planning. Nt including yur values in career planning means yu run the risk f preparing fr a career which yu subsequently find ut desn t suit yu. 3. Explain that tday yu will be fcusing n six imprtant wrk values which are Achievement, Independence, Recgnitin, Relatinships, Supprt, and Wrking Cnditins. 4. Intrduce the Wrk Imprtance Prfiler by telling students it will help them discver which wrk values are mst imprtant t them. Demnstrate hw t cmplete the WIP by ging t the CareerZne (link in Materials sectin) and taking the necessary actins n the first page. Tell students that the WIP will rank-rder the six wrk values yu have been talking abut. 5. Have students g nline and cmplete the WIP. If yu want yur students t save their results but they d nt have CareerZne accunts yet, distribute the Califrnia CareerZne Student Accunt Setup handut and have them set up an accunt. 3 f 6

6. Once students finish the assessment and are n the summary page, have them click n the green View Occupatins hyperlink. Students will see a list f ccupatins in line with their mst imprtant wrk values. 7. Discuss the WIP results. Ask students t share their highest values and the crrespnding jbs that matched thse values. Were there any surprises in terms f which values came ut the highest r which jbs were identified as a ptential match? 8. Wrap Up. Explain t students that they may have never thught abut their values (what yu believe) as being imprtant in career planning (what they plan t d) but the cnnectin between the tw is critical. Instruct students t use what they ve learned t find the best pssible career fr them. 9. Remind students t put their wrksheet int their career prtflis. Estimated Time One class sessin Evaluatin Students cmplete the Wrk Imprtance Prfiler and identify their three mst imprtant values Participate in class discussin n values and ccupatinal gals Adaptatins Have students cnduct interviews with parents r ther adults asking them t talk abut what is mst imprtant t them abut their ccupatin. Have students take that infrmatin and identify the wrk values expressed by the interviewee. Attributins The vcabulary definitins were adapted frm O*NET Wrk Imprtance Prfiler User Guide, Versin 3, Emplyment and Training Administratin, United States Department f Labr, 2002. This lessn and all ther lessns and materials are psted n the Califrnia Career Resurce Netwrk Web site at www.califrniacareers.inf. 4 f 6

Califrnia CareerZne Student Accunt Setup - Instructr s Ntes The step-by-step accunt setup instructins are in the student handut. As the instructr, it is imprtant fr yu t knw that: Students can cmplete sme f the activities n the CareerZne withut having a student accunt. Hwever, students assessments results and ccupatinal research will nt be saved unless students are lgged int their accunts. Because career and cllege planning is an nging prcess, having students save their wrk means they will be able t access it fr anther class r at a later date. T help yur students remember their passwrds, yu may wish t establish a passwrd cnventin. Here are tw examples: student initial + year + class perid [ts2017perid1] student initial + schl s initials + year [tsdsh2017] IMPORTANT: State and federal laws gvern the cnditins and limitatins fr Internet usage by children under the age f 13.
