UPS System and Stationary Training
Training Objective More than ever, plant personnel are being challenged with the maintenance and repair of the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems in their plants. These UPS systems back up critical components within the plants power architecture, which can lead to major financial and safety implications if not operated correctly. The objective of our training is to teach the basic theory in our state-of-the-art classrooms and provide extensive hands-on training so students are comfortable and confident in operating and maintaining the UPS and the stationary battery upon returning to the plant. This increases reliability and helps prevent catastrophic failures and subsequent unplanned downtime. Training Philosophy Our philosophy is to teach people how to operate AMETEK UPS systems confidently using theory and extensive hands-on training. This includes critical information for their stationary battery system. Our experienced and qualified instructors teach this knowledge at a level that the student can understand and allows for considerable hands-on time so that they can be comfortable with all modes of operation and switching procedures. Thus, plant personnel can return to their job with the knowledge and confidence to work on their UPS system. Who Should Attend? Our seminars are intended for anyone involved with industrial grade critical and emergency power systems. This includes Maintenance, Planners, Supervisors, Engineers, Operators, Facility Managers, as well as those seeking Continued Education Units. Upon completion of the seminar you will have the basic knowledge and skills to handle routine operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the systems in your plants. In addition, with each course, you will have earned 2.7 CEUs. Instructors Our instructors are seasoned pros, each of whom have over 15 years of field experience working on UPS systems in plant environments. They blend their knowledge of operating theory with real world field experience to provide a learning environment ideal for plant personnel. Our battery consultants are regarded as the top industry experts for stationary battery systems in the USA. On-Site Training We always encourage our clients to send students to one of our state-of-the-art facilities so we can provide the best environment for learning away from the turmoil of day-to-day plant operations. We also understand that this is not always an option, or our client is looking for more specialized training in regards to their specific equipment. We would be delighted to provide you with a quote to bring our dedicated training to your facility. This can also include the rental of a student UPS with faults already inserted to allow troubleshooting on site and trouble-free switching without jeopardizing any critical loads. 2 - Training

Course Overview Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS): The seminar is structured under the assumption that most plant personnel have some previous electrical/electronic training, but may not have used some of it recently. We start at the input terminals and end at the output terminals of the UPS. We walk through each component, identifying failure modes and how to test for them. We use one-line and schematic diagrams as we walk through each block in the UPS and describe what it does and how. This allows us to show the students how to identify each component using our schematics and how to identify them in our actual UPS in the classroom. With this knowledge, the student is prepared to participate in numerous lab exercises that focus on hands-on operation of the system in all modes of operation. Operating procedures are followed and used to demonstrate normal and emergency operation with an emphasis on safe practices. This then leads to the part of the course that all our previous students say is the most interesting and helpful. It emphasizes on real life troubleshooting using our training UPS systems, which have been fitted with and programmed to abnormal conditions seen in the field. Students get to use various multimeters and are shown what to check for and where to check. Houston, Texas Our Gulf Coast Regional service office outside of Houston in Stafford, TX, houses the flagship training center at AMETEK Solidstate Controls. This training facility has two identical classrooms with state-of-the-art touchscreen, interactive projectors, taking the learning experience to the next level. We also have a climate controlled lab area that houses numerous different types of UPS systems that have been modified so that faults and malfunctions seen in the field, can be simulated and troubleshot by the students. It offers an unparalleled handson experience and student after student leave excellent feedback in our course evaluation forms. We have also added a cutting-edge battery lab that allows students to work hands-on with many different styles of batteries. This is excellent for improving battery maintenance skills in your workforce. Our aim is to train our students so that they have the knowledge and skills to go back to their plants and be confident when operating the UPS and battery systems in a safe manner and without jeopardizing the critical load. 2018 Dates Course Name March 12 May 7 July 16 September 10 November 5 December 3 Stationary Stationary Stationary Stationary Stationary Nuclear Analog Charger and Inverter 4 - Training
Atlanta, Georgia Carlsbad, California In cooperation with Georgia Power at Georgia Northwestern Technical College, we now have a complete Ferroresonant UPS and stationary battery training facility available in the Atlanta, Georgia area. This facility has a classroom environment for the theory training and a running UPS system that has been modified so that faults and malfunctions, seen in the field, can be simulated and troubleshot by the students. This gives great hands-on experience for the students and allows them to switch the unit many times and in many modes of operation. This location offers an attractive option for our eastern and southeastern clients who utilize Ferroresonant equipment in their plant. Our newest facility is located in Carlsbad, California, on the Pacific coast just North of San Diego. This fantastic facility, opened in 2015, was specifically designed for UPS and battery training. It has a high-tech classroom and a state-of-theart practical lab area with numerous UPS systems fitted with common faults. Previous student evaluation forms have given excellent remarks on the extensive hands-on experience provided with the UPS and battery systems in the lab area. Course Overview Stationary : Any system is only as strong as the weakest link. This is true for a UPS system and it s connected stationary battery. Many battery problems go unrecognized for long periods of time before a failure occurs. This becomes the weakest link in the system and will not be able to meet the demand when needed in a power outage. The stationary battery portion of the seminar will allow students to identify these problems in time to take corrective action before a catastrophic failure occurs. This increases the reliability of the whole system. Cell issues are defined and illustrated with pictures and videos. Both lead-acid and nickel cadmium stationary batteries are discussed in vented and valve-regulated designs. Practical exercises include preparation and installation of cells as well as the collection and interpretation of data. Some Topics Covered Include: Safety equipment and procedures, applicable industry safety codes and standards including NERC requirements, protection of terminals and connections, spill containment systems, battery basics and report ability, parameters of valve regulated and vented cell designs, basic chemistry, cell anatomy, charging and the effects of temperature. Also covered are the principles of installation and discharge testing. Practical Lab Exercises: Students will use test equipment to practice installation and maintenance techniques. Once the maintenance procedures are completed, students will then evaluate the data and make their recommendations. Course Title: Sizing and DC System Design Seminar Duration: 2 Days Course Description: The Sizing and DC System Design Seminar will allow the participants to gain the knowledge necessary to size stationary batteries using the positive plate, Ampere-hour or constant power methodologies and to size the battery charger associated with the battery. The participant will also gain the knowledge necessary to develop a procurement specification for a battery system, including specification of acceptance criteria for factory testing and the battery basic knowledge of the design bases typically used for DC system design. This will include an understanding of the industry standards applicable to DC system design and in the case of nuclear power generation, documents issued by the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission focusing on stationary batteries and DC systems. The types of calculations that can be performed for DC systems will be discussed. Course Title: Capacity Testing Workshop Duration: 2 Days Course Description: This workshop begins in the classroom with a discussion of capacity tests, battery safety, and BCT-2000 battery discharge system. By the afternoon of the first day, the participant will perform tasks for familiarization with the software for the discharge system. On day two, in a small team, the participant will use the BCT-2000 to perform a discharge test, using test equipment and batteries installed in the lab. Participants will be required to generate a report from the data taken by the BCT-2000 and evaluate the test results. Upon the completion of the workshop, the participant will be capable of safely performing a battery capacity test, which for this workshop will require the use of a BCT-2000 battery capacity test system.
