27 Churinga Ave., Mitcham 3132 phone: 9874 6381 www.rangeview.vic.edu.au rangeview.ps@edumail.vic.gov.au Issue 1 8th February 2017 From the Principal s Desk What a great start to 2017 we have had! On Tuesday, it was great to see students and families return to start the 2017 school year. This year we welcome 94 new Foundation students and 19 students from Level 1-6 to the school. Staff returned to work last Monday. I hope you have had a chance to enjoy the summer holidays. 2016 was a highly productive year and 2017 is looking to an equally exciting and productive school year. This year we have 2 more pupil free days in term 1 on Fri 10th March & Mon 20th March. We will be working on aspects of deep learning with other NPDL schools on March 10 th. Dyslexia will be the focus on Monday 20 th March. The spread of pupil free days is throughout the year, targeting different aspects of professional learning. The leadership team met on Wednesday 25 January, before staff returned, to look at the 2017 directions in teaching and learning reflected in the School Strategic Plan 2014-17 and the draft AIP (Annual Implementation Plan). There is one remaining pupil free day for 2017 after term 1, which is yet to confirmed. The first pupil free day was Monday, 30th January which allowed for AIP time, student wellbeing, start up processes in schools and team meetings, and classroom preparation for the start of the term. It was an invaluable learning time together and also allowed a smooth transition for new and returning students over Tuesday and Wednesday. JANUARY WORKS - The school was a busy place in January with a number of projects undertaken. The massive clean-up of the grounds and veggie patches needed to be done in readiness for the start of the year. The installation of the new level 3 portable was completed and then made ready for the first day. Student Leaders - At the Monday assembly this week, the 2017 School Captains, Joshua & Jessica led their first school assembly. They had worked on the first Rangeview News for the year with the Technician Leaders, Kim and Heydon and interviewing staff and students. This was shown at assembly and the 2017 student leaders were also presented with their badges by the local State Member for Ringwood, Dee Ryall MP. These students will meet as a team regularly to develop a greater understanding of the role and set their own personal goals. There will be further opportunities for other students to lead, such as the Newsletter Reporters or the eagerly awaited Foundation Buddies or on the sporting field as we look at the education of the whole child. FOUNDATION 2017 On Wednesday 1st February we hosted Cheers & Tears morning tea for Foundation parents and grandparents. This important milestone was celebrated by parents and gave them the opportunity to introduce themselves to other new families and ask any questions they still may have had. There certainly was more cheers than tears to celebrate the start of the year and the years ahead as members of our school community. Mrs Liz Barr - Principal Level 6 Camp - Monday, 5th June - Friday, 9th June L5/6 Production - Possible Dates 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 9th, 10th, 11th August (to be advised shortly) Welcome back to an exciting term of Music! Junior and Senior Choir Changes to Enrolments A notice was sent home last week for Level 2 6 students interested in joining the Junior, Senior choir and band. Students needed to fill out an application form and hand it to the office by Wednesday, 8th February. Please be aware that due to overwhelming interest in joining both the Senior Choir and Junior Choir last year, there are some changes to the structure of these ensembles: Junior Choir will now take Level 2 and 3 students (with Miss Hubbard) Senior Choir will now take Level 4, 5 and 6 students (with Mrs Melitsis) For Level 1 students interested in joining choir, there will be opportunities later in the year to come along to some rehearsals and experience what it s like to be in a choir! This year, Junior and Senior Choir will be accepting a maximum of forty-five students. This is to ensure students are getting the most out of rehearsal and performance experiences, as well as continuing to establish high quality choral performances. After the process is complete, any students who have missed out will be placed on a waiting list. You will be contacted if an available spot becomes free. Weekly rehearsals will commence in Week 3 of this term. Senior Choir will begin on Monday 13 th February from 8.15am in the Music room. Junior Choir will begin on Tuesday 14 th February from 8.15am in the Music room. Band will begin on Wednesday 15 th February from 8.00am in the Music room. If your child/ren would like to join any of these groups, it is important to remind them that this is a yearly commitment and that it is important to attend rehearsals every week on time. Instrumental Lessons Instrumental lessons will commence in Week 3 (week beginning 13 February). We are very lucky to have a fantastic 2 nd hand Bernstein piano, located in the Resource room for piano lessons! Instrumental lessons are available to students from Level 1 to 6. You can request to have a lesson during school time or after hours. We offer woodwind, brass, strings, drums and piano lessons. Creative Music is our keyboard and guitar provider. If you require more information about how to enroll in Instrumental lessons, please obtain a flyer from the office or speak to Mrs Melitsis. Junior Choir Auditions - Dear Potential Junior Choir Students (Level 2-3 only) Thank you for your interest to join the Junior Choir this year. Due to an overwhelming response, the fairest way to choose participants is to hold an audition. These auditions will take place this Thursday lunchtime at 1.10pm in the Music room. The auditions will be in a whole group and will be a fun and simple group activity. Students will be notified of the outcome as soon as possible, if they are to begin Junior Choir on Tuesday, 14 th February. Thanks for supporting the Junior Choir and the Music program at Rangeview Primary School - Mrs K Melitsis (Performing Arts/Instrumental Coordinator Senior Choir/band leader) and Miss M Hubbard (Foundation teacher Junior Choir leader)
