Prospectus 2014 2015 CORBY Technical School infinite paths to choose from...

What I like about Corby Technical School is the small classes, the warm and supportive environment and the approachable staff who are always pushing the students to the next level. Carmel McNeill, Corby Technical School parent Contents Principal s welcome...03 School Life...04 Our curriculum...05 The new building...06 Student care and guidance...07 What our students think...08 The future...09 Communicating with parents...10 Admissions... 11 About us We are a state-funded free school, which means that like academies we have certain benefits. We can choose to teach subjects other than those that make up the national curriculum, control our own budget and can set our own term times and days to enhance students needs and teaching practices.

PRINCIPAL s WELCOME 3 Principal s welcome The opening of Corby Technical School in September 2012 marked another exciting chapter of education for Corby and I am honoured to be part of this new beginning. Corby Technical School is part of the Brooke Weston Trust; a network of schools which includes five secondary schools and five primary schools. The Brooke Weston Trust has a reputation for delivering highquality education in order to help every child flourish. The benefits of the Trust include the sharing of staff expertise and offering a wider variety of opportunities to students through joint ventures. The curriculum at Corby Technical School offers a broad range of subjects but with a strong emphasis on the development of technical knowledge and understanding. Our primary aim is to provide a learning environment that will inspire students and equip them for careers within technical fields such as: civil engineering, architecture, motorsport engineering, computing and electronics. Another unique feature of our school is its small size in each year group we offer places to 75 students only. We are therefore able to devote more quality time to each student by providing individual targeted support. Students and staff alike have the common purpose of success and achievement. Our aim is to develop confident learners, who take ownership of their learning and are proud of their achievements. From December 2013, students will study in our brand new building on Cottingham Road. Built to the high standards of the other Brooke Weston Trust Schools it will be a modern learning environment with a range of high quality facilities. Students who join us will be part of a close-knit school community and will thrive in an atmosphere where they feel safe, confident and are supported in all aspects of their education. I look forward to welcoming cohort 2014. Angela Reynolds, Principal

4 SCHOOL LIFE School Life The school day Each school day is split into five lessons (each lasting an hour and 15 minutes). All students will have an assembly and tutor time daily. The tutor is the main contact point for parents. Our doors open at 08.00am each day and close at 16.05 on Mondays and Fridays, with extended hours until 17.00 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. Catering A range of healthy snacks and hot meals are provided on site and students will have a 15 minute breakfast break and a 30 minute lunch break. Students can bring their own packed lunch. All meals will be consumed in the restaurant. Uniform School uniform is compulsory for all students and we expect students to be dressed smartly at all times. Students will require a Corby Technical School blazer and tie. This should be worn with black trousers/knee length skirt, white shirt and black school shoes.

CURRICULUM 5 Curriculum The curriculum at Corby Technical School has been designed to secure high levels of academic achievement in the subjects included in the English Baccalaureate (English, mathematics, history or geography, the sciences and a language), together with a range of subjects encompassing engineering, construction, electronics and ICT. Key Stage 3 Key Stage 3 encompasses National Curriculum subjects, with students approaching topics within each subject from the perspective of how it is relevant to industrial innovation. The curriculum covers English, maths, science, humanities, design and technology, beliefs, philosophy and ethics, citizenship, modern foreign languages, PE, creative arts and IT. In addition to these subjects, a proportion of curriculum time is devoted to multisubject challenges. The challenges are based around realistic technical problems and will incorporate a range of different subjects and skills. The aim is to enable students to become creative thinkers via practical investigation and the development of solutions. Students will be encouraged to take part in externally set challenges such as the Rotary Technology Challenge, STEM challenges and the CREST Bronze award. Key Stage 4 In Years 9, 10 and 11, students will follow the English Baccalaureate and choose from applied technical qualifications at Level 2 or equivalent offered by Tresham. Their studies will be supplemented by a programme of entrepreneurial challenges linked to work experience in Corby and the surrounding area. Employer engagement at this level will increase and students will be encouraged to take part in work experience activities. This will enable students to develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes to the workplace that are more in-line with what industry expect. Key Stage 5 As the school matures we will have a sixth form which will offer a range of A Level courses geared towards students who have chosen to follow a technical career. Extra Curricular We believe that learning takes place outside of the classroom as well as within and so we encourage our students to take part in the extra curricular clubs we offer. Choose Corby Technical School...if you want a curriculum that is stimulating and guaranteed to secure high levels of academic achievements in core subjects as well as a range of exciting technical subjects.

6 NEW SCHOOL BUILDING New building The new state-of-the-art school building will open in December 2013. It will share many design features of the Brooke Weston Trust s other schools in Corby and Kettering. The two-storey building will sit in spacious tree lined grounds and will have two learning wings consisting of Science laboratories, Design Technology workshops, IT suites, Music Technology and Art and Design studios, a Theatre, Library, Sports Hall and a dedicated dining room. There will be extensive use of glass throughout in line with the Brooke Weston Trust philosophy of openness and visibility. Another key part of the Trust s ethos which requires that everyone is treated as an equal, will have an influence on the day to day routines of the school. Staff and students will use the same entrances; staff furniture will be the same as the furniture students will use and staff will wait in line at meal times just as students would. Doors will be kept unlocked except for in rooms where confidential records or exam information is stored. The new building will use a swipe card system for access control and a cashless catering system. Display screens will also be located throughout the building to communicate key information to students and staff. Artist s impression of one of the faculty wings

STUDENT CARE AND GUIDANCE 7 Student care and guidance Each student will have a form tutor whose role is to make sure the student s time at Corby Technical School is happy and secure. The tutor will develop a relationship of trust and respect with the student and will offer guidance in their academic studies as well as provide support with any personal issues. Student progress is reported on termly.

8 WHAT OUR STUDENTS THINK Jake 8C Vanessa 8C Joe 8T Emma 8T Robbie 8S Charlotte 8S What our students think Jake 8C I really enjoy the range of subjects we do and I like it when we have different people coming into school for the STEM sessions, it was great when Triumph came in with motorbikes. I love PE and I can t wait to use the big new Sports Hall. The new building looks great with all the glass. Emma 8T I enjoy going to school here because the classes are really small. I m really looking forward to moving into the new building because there will be lots of new facilities for us to use. Vanessa 8C I think it is great at Corby Technical School because I love doing engineering and technological activities. I have also really been enjoying DT lessons. The teachers here are great, we do lots of fun projects. Robbie 8S When I came to school here I really liked being part of a new beginning, to be part of starting a new school and helping to make it the best that it can be. We have done lots of fun things in lessons so far, I have really enjoyed what we have been doing in tech. Joe 8T I really enjoy school. It s good having small classes because you get more one to one time with your teacher. I like doing DT because we do lots of good practical work and in the new building we will have even more facilities to make projects in DT. Charlotte 8S I really enjoy all the technology lessons we get to do. In the new building there are lots of open study areas, which I really like and think I will use a lot. I really like STEM too.

THE FUTURE 9 The future We are just at the start of our journey and have great plans for the years ahead. Our new building will allow our students access to the latest technologies and enable them to have a first rate education. Our aim is to help our students become technically gifted so that they can go on to a successful career within some of today s emerging industries in the science, design and computing fields. Pathways to industry We offer a curriculum that allows our students to choose from a range of technical courses to be studied alongside a core of more traditional GCSE subjects at age 14. We will also work in close partnership with Tresham College of Further and Higher Education to offer pathways into the technical industries. We will explore links with professional associations such as SEMTA (the Sector Skills Council for science, engineering and manufacturing technologies in the UK), the Institute of the Motor Industry and the Institution of Mechanical Engineers. The intention is to offer students both existing qualifications and professional body registration status. Close links with businesses in the local community will be developed to form the connection between theoretical and practical, which greatly enhances pupils understanding of real-life working situations. As pupils make progress through the key stages they will be given the opportunity to pursue a path of study that focuses on the specific technical aspect that engages and motivates them.

10 COMMUNICATING WITH PARENTS Communicating with parents We are committed to working with parents and making sure they are kept up-to-date with their child s progress. A parent s evening is held once a year and parents can get in touch with the tutor by email or by calling the main school number. Homework is posted on our website so parents can see the tasks which have been set. We will also issue regular newsletters throughout the year, which will update on news from the school. Our website www.corbytechnicalschool.org will also be refreshed weekly with important information. Our policies are also available to view on request from the school.

ADMISSIONS 11 Admissions Corby Technical School is situated close to the centre of Corby and is intended primarily to serve the area of Corby which means the town of Corby and the associated villages for Corby secondary schools, as defined in the Local Authority s Annual Information for Parents booklet. The associated villages are currently: Brigstock, Cottingham, East Carlton, Great Oakley, Gretton, Harringworth, Little Oakley, Lyveden, Middleton, Rockingham, Stanion and Weldon. We have an admission number of 75 in Year 7. If the school is oversubscribed, after the admission of Looked After Children and students with Statements of Special Educational Needs where the school is named in the Statement, all other applicants will take a suitable cognitive ability test. This test is used to ensure that we admit an intake that is representative of the national ability range and is comprehensive in its intake. For more details on the admissions process visit our website at www.corbytechnicalschool.org Choose Corby Technical School if you want your child to gain valuable, relevant work experience that will prepare them for employment, that will develop the skills which are actively sought in today s industry and provide a real insight into career options earlier than in other schools.
