Physical Education Handbook Welcome to Physical Education at Redwood Middle School This handbook has important information for your success in physical education. You should read it carefully and always keep a copy in your notebook. If you need another copy, you can print another one from the Redwood Middle School website: www.conejo.k12.ca.us/redwood. Talk with your teacher if you have questions about physical education that are not answered here. Physical education is... learning what you need to know, and be able to do, to be physically active now as a teen, and throughout your lifetime. At Redwood we believe... Physical education is an integral part of each students education Teachers, parents, and other adults in a student s life make significant contributions to a student s education and are responsible for ensuring each student has what they need to learn Every student can successfully learn the content of physical education Here is what you will be learning... The Physical Education Content Standards for California Public Schools outline what students need to know and be able to do in physical education at each grade level. There are five overarching standards for middle school: 1. Learn a variety of movement skills and movement patterns so you can participate in, and enjoy a variety of physical activities. 2. Learn about principles and strategies that will help you improve your movement skills. 3. Measure your personal physical fitness, then maintain or improve your own fitness. 4. Learn about physical fitness concepts and strategies that will help you make good decision about your physical activity. 5. Learn and practice concepts and strategies that will help you improve as an individual, and when you work with others. Be on time! Be ready to learn... Everyday! All students must be in the locker room when the tardy bell finishes ringing and then, be seated on their attendance place or number 5 minutes after the tardy bell. Nearing the end of the period, students will be dismissed to the locker rooms by their teacher, Important do not leave when the bell rings, your teacher will dismiss you. After changing back into your school clothes, wait behind the red-painted line until the bell rings.
Dressed to be YOUR BEST! Redwood students dress in physical education uniforms every day. Here s what we wear: Gray T-shirt If the student chooses not to wear the Redwood physical education shirt, they may wear a PLAIN gray shirt (no logos). The shirt must have the FIRST and LAST Name printed on the front and back, just like the Redwood Uniform. Black Shorts Likewise, the student may wear PLAIN black shorts (no logos). The shorts must have the FIRST and LAST Name printed on the front of the left leg, same as the Redwood Uniform. Socks Socks that are appropriate for physical activity. Tights are not allowed to be worn to class. Athletic shoes To keep you safe and performing at your best, your shoes must be tightly laced and tied each day. Slip-on shoes, ugg-style boots, and other non-athletic shoes are not permitted because they don t keep you safe during physical activity. When the weather is cold... Students may wear sweats shirt/pants over the physical education uniform. Sweats must be plain gray, black, or red if not purchased at the Student Store. Sweatshirts and Sweatpants must have the FIRST and LAST Name printed on them, same as the Redwood sweats. Students may also wear a light-gray or white undershirt (long or short sleeve) with their first and last name printed just above the bottom hem. Clean uniforms are a must! Take your uniform home each Friday to be laundered and always remember to bring it back to school on Monday. We don t wear any of these things to physical education... Untied or slip on shoes Jackets Dangling jewelry Beanies Hats or caps worn backwards Sunglasses Clothes that were worn to school Redwood physical education uniform & sweats may be purchased online or at the student store from Mrs. Glass, (located behind the library in her office.) o T-Shirt $12.00 o Shorts $14.00 o Sweatshirt or Sweatpants $ 20.00 o Used T-Shirts or Shorts $5.00 (Purchase from your physical education teacher) When you don t have your physical education uniform... When you don t have your physical education uniform, borrow a loaner shirt and/or shorts from your physical education teacher not from another student. Borrowing loaner clothes should be a rare event- not something you do regularly. There are some consequences for borrowing loaner clothes (per trimester): First time: No consequences Second time: 30 minutes detention
Third time: Fourth time: Fifth time: 60 minutes detention and call or email to your parents Class referral sent home and Saturday school recommended School referral and two Saturday school sessions recommended Keep YOU and your Stuff SAFE! The locker rooms are a place to get dressed and keep your things safe while you are in class. They are not a place to wait for your friends or play around. Here are some important things to know... Backpacks, glass containers, spray deodorants and other spray products, and food and drinks are not allowed in the locker rooms. Please don t run, scream, push others, or throw things in the locker rooms. Using your deodorant and other items on you, not other people or the lockers, walls, benches, etc. Repeated violations of the locker room policies may result in a referral to administration and removal from the locker room use privileges. Physical Education Locks All locks used in the locker rooms must be combination locks. If you purchase your lock at Redwood, you will be able to get help faster from a teacher in the locker room if you need assistance. Also important to know... Never, never, never, tell anyone your locker combination not even your best friend!!! Write your lock serial number (the longest number on the back of your lock) and combination in a safe place (Assignment notebook is best) and make sure you have it for the entire year. This will make it easy for you to find your lock should you lose it or forget your combination. Students who want to avoid problems with their lockers and uniform will ALWAYS spin their dial and pull-down on the lock before leaving the locker room If your lock is missing, look for their lock on the lock bar by the teachers office door. Students must use the lockers assigned to them and not move to other lockers. If you need to purchase a new lock, you can buy one a new one at the student store or a used lock from a physical education teacher. Important: All lock information (including any changes during the school year) must be reported to your physical education teacher for recording purposes. An Important Note about Academic Honesty... Students will not share their work or test information with other students unless permission is expressly given by the teacher. Students shall not misrepresent the work of others as their own. Consequences for academic dishonesty are located on page 13 of the assignment notebook and also available in the CVUSD Discipline Handbook.
If you are sick or injured... Sometimes students are injured or not feeling their best for physical activity. If that happens, here s what you need to know... A note from a parent/guardian or your doctor is necessary for you to be excused from participating in class activities. If you have a note, you will need to dress in the physical education uniform and participate as allowed by the medical note. Students who are not able to participate (fully or partially) may be given an alternative written assignment so they can learn what is included in class for that day(s). Notes from Parents/Guardians are honored for the day(s) indicated in the note. These notes are honored for a maximum of three days. A doctor s note is necessary for medical conditions or illnesses requiring more than three days of modified participation. All doctor s notes should be taken to the Health Office before school and a copy made for the physical education teacher. Students may have doctor s medical excuses faxed to school at 497-3734 to the attention of their physical education teacher. If you become ill or get injured during the school day and arrive to class without a medical note, talk to your teacher about what will be required. A doctor and/or parent does not excuse a student from each of the following: o Dressing in the physical education uniform o Attending class o Participating in activities he/she can safely complete o Making up the work that was missed due to inability to participate. If you are absent... Have several study buddies from your physical education class who you can call if you are absent. You ll want to know what you missed in class, because you are responsible for that work. Always ask your teacher for information about what you missed and how to make it up. Earning your Grade in Physical Education The grade you earn in physical education communicates to you and others, about your progress toward learning what you should be learning in physical education. Each student s grade in physical education is based on: Classwork and Homework = 50% This is the work that is done every day in class and for homework.
