What's New with the Sports High Guru Edition 3 Term 4, 2017 Illawarra Sports High School Phone 4271 1099 Principal Raechel McCarthy Illawaspor-h.school@det.nsw.edu.au Principal s Message Hello and welcome to our final newsletter for the year. I am immensely proud of our student and staff achievements over 2017 and we are all looking forward to the school holidays as a time to rest up for an equally busy 2018. In response to a few parent/carer requests, I have invited the new Term 2 principal Mr Gary Hampton to attend a special Parents and Helpers Meeting on Monday 29th January 6.30pm (the day before school starts for Year 7, 11 and 12 students). As most of you would be aware, Mr Hampton starts at Illawarra Sports High School, day one of Term 2 2018, when I commence my new role as Director Educational Leadership. As he is currently principal of Warialda High School in north western NSW, he is still on holiday at this time and is therefore able to attend the meeting (Western Region schools get an extra week holiday). Mr Hampton is very excited to start as principal of this great school and I think it s great that he is happy to meet with parent/carers before he starts. Even if you don t usually attend Parents and Helpers meetings, I encourage you to come along! We will send out reminders via Facebook etc. I would like to wish all students, staff and families a wonderful Christmas and holiday season. Thanks for being such a positive and supportive school learning community. Make change happen Parents and Friends Meeting Monday 29th January @ 6.30pm Special guest : Mr Hampton (New Principal) Sports High Guru 1

On Friday 24 th November 60 students walked the streets of Berkeley handing out flyers about White Ribbon Day. The school is proud to support White Ribbon which aims to raise community awareness of the important issue of domestic violence towards women and the importance of respectful relationships between men and women. Our walk ended at Berkeley Public School. FEEDBACK FROM A PARENT Hi Raechel, You may remember I contacted you via e-mail earlier this year with some feedback on the Open Night we attended in February. Thank you again for the time you took to reply to that e-mail. I just wanted to let you know we attended the Orientation Day yesterday for Year 6 students and parents. I know people usually only provide feedback when they want to complain, so I thought it was worth sending some positive feedback congratulating the school on an excellent presentation yesterday. We felt that the length and content of the presentation was perfectly suited to the occasion. The whole morning was very professionally run yet also managed to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for the year 6 students. Thank you, it was a very enjoyable and informative morning. Kind regards, Sandra Johnson (parent of Alexander Balint) Sports High Guru 3
Elouera Café On Thursday week 8, Elouera stage 4 students hosted their first ISH Café for their families. The theme of the day was Celebration of Food, and the students were involved in all aspects of the event from designing the menu and invitations, to cooking and serving. A huge congratulations to the students as well as the amazing TAS staff who guided them every step of the way. We would also like to thank all the parents, grandparents and siblings who joined us to celebrate on the day. Elizabeth Cividin Sports High Guru 4

The following staff are on the move. Gemma Crane- From PDHPE to HSIE In her first year of teaching after graduating from UOW, Ms Crane has gone from strength to strength. She is one of the hardest working and most efficient members of the PDHPE faculty. This year she organised the Jump Rope for Heart and was front and centre in the Southern Stars Dance group. HSIE are lucky to get a dedicated young teacher that is able to build a strong rapport with her students. Nicholas O Hara-From PDHPE to Science Nicholas completed his final practicum at ISHS in 2016 and after witnessing his maturity and teaching skills we knew he would be a perfect replacement for Ms Hannon whilst she was on maternity leave. In this time he has conducted himself in a professional manner organising various excursions and coaching Rugby League for the TSDP program. Nicholas will be joining Science in 2018, which is great news that the school gets to keep a wonderful young teacher. Megan Hannon Ms Hannon is returning to ISHS after the birth of her first child, Parker. She is planning on working three days a week and balancing motherhood with work. Megan is an experienced teacher who is able to build strong relationships with her students. We are looking forward to having Ms Hannon back at ISHS in 2018. The HSIE Faculty will be seeing lots of new and exciting changes in 2018. Ms Starling has been successful at gaining at Head Teacher job at another school and Miss Wood will also be moving to a new school. The HSIE Faculty and the whole school wishes these teachers well in their future careers. Mr Ganino and Mr Mitchell will also be leaving the HSIE Faculty with Mr Mitchell taking up a role in the PE/PD/Health Faculty. Due to all these changes we will be welcoming some new teaching staff in 2018. Mr Owen will be returning as the Head Teacher HSIE with Miss Lee, Miss Mander and Miss Crane joining the faculty. I look forward to working with all these excellent staff in the future and continue to see the students of ISHS enjoying the vast scope of HSIE subjects on offer. Mr Owen SCHOOL PHOTOS. CYBERSAFETY PRESENTATIONS Last week we had Susan McLean, an ex-police officer and Cybersafety expert come and speak to Years 7, 8 and 9 about Cybersafety. She spoke about the facts in relation to cyberspace, digital reputation, cyberbullying, 'online' friends and sexting. We thought it important to hold such a session here at school to ensure we are educating our junior students so that they can be as knowledgeable as possible about keeping themselves safe online. Some key points that we should all remember are: Nothing can be totally deleted things are permanent online. You are NEVER anonymous online You always leave a digital footprint Postings and comments can be found years later Passwords must NEVER be shared. Anyone can be anyone online. WIN news even came and did a story on us, thankyou to our Year 7 SRC students Ana and Kieran for being interviewed. - Mrs Taylor - HT Welfare Sports High Guru 7
TOP BLOKES Congratulations to those Year 9 & 10 boys who completed the Top Blokes program last week. This is a 16 week program where external facilitators come in and work with groups of boys on topics such as alcohol and drugs, mental health, healthy relationships, masculinity, anger management and leadership and teamwork. We hope that the boys that have been involved in the program this year have benefitted from the experience that these weekly sessions have provided. Mrs Taylor - HT Welfare Sports High Guru 8
This month on SchoolTV - Surviving Year 12 The final year of secondary school is a year of hard work and a huge commitment for students. With so much going on it can be hard to find the balance between study and life. It is a time when personalities start to emerge, there are more complex interpersonal relationships and there is the pressure to perform academically. With all of this going on, it s not surprising that some students have an emotional response and it is therefore extremely important for parents to know how to support their children during this time. Some kids will need more support than others. Keeping the communication lines open with your child, their teachers, mentors and other parents will be crucial. Being aware of your child s mental and physical wellbeing can play a vital role in their success. In this edition of SchoolTV, parents will discover practical advice for students and parents to help get through the final year of secondary school. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month s edition and we always welcome your feedback. If you have any concerns about your child, please contact the school counsellor for further information.
