support materials Using the SharePoint Learning Kit (SLK) Setting an assignment It is possible on Hwb+ to set assignments for pupils using an assignment tool (SLK). Pupils will be able to see the assignments they have been set by their teachers and will be able to complete and submit their assignments via Hwb+. Teachers will then be able to mark the assignments and return them to the pupils via Hwb+. The teacher will need to log onto Hwb+ and go to their subject area. Select the subject where they wish to allocate homework to the pupils. Click on the Document library. Hwb+ support materials 1

Create a new document library where you will upload the assignments. Click on Add a new document library. Give the document library a name. Click on Create. It is possible to upload the assignment from your computer by selecting Add a new document but you can also create an assignment using the Office Web App tools which are part of Hwb+. 2 Hwb+ support materials

Adding the Office Web Apps tools Open the newly created Assignments library. Select Site Actions at the top left of the page. Click on Edit Page. You will now be working in edit mode. Select Add a web part. Select the Office Web App tools from the Salamander Folder that has appeared on the ribbon at the top of the page. Click on Add and the Office Web App tools will be added to the assignments document library. Hwb+ support materials 3

Click on Stop Editing at the top left of the screen and the Office Web App tools will be inserted into your Assignments document library. These tools will enable you to create an assignment without the need for having Microsoft Office installed on your computer. The created assignment will automatically be saved into your assignments library. The pupil permissions on your new assignments library will need to be changed to prevent the pupils from editing your set assignment. Changing permissions Open your assignment library. Select the Library tab at the top of the page. Click on Library Permissions. At the top of the page select Stop inheriting permissions. 4 Hwb+ support materials

Click the check boxes next to the student groups. Select Edit user permissions from the top of the page. Check the box next to Read permissions. This will enable the pupils to read the document but not edit it but will allow the teacher to edit the document. Hwb+ support materials 5

Teacher instructions for using the Assignment tool (SLK) Create an assignment using the Office Web Apps OR upload an assignment that you have created on your computer. Click on the drop down menu by the title of your assignment and select Assign to site. Fill in the details of the assignment and select the date you wish the assignment to be returned and allocate the assignment to groups of pupils or specific pupils. Select OK and the assignment will be sent to the pupils. The pupils will be able to see any new assignments on their home page or by opening the SLK icon at the top of the page by their mail tab. 6 Hwb+ support materials

Pupil instructions for using the Assignment tool (SLK) Log onto Hwb+. On the home page you will see the Assignment tool (SLK) where your due assignments will be displayed. You can also see your due assignments by clicking on the icon at the top of the page. Click on the assignment you wish to complete. Select Begin assignment. The assignment will open using the Office Web Apps Tool and the pupil can complete the assignment without needing to have Microsoft Office installed on their computer. Save the completed work Select Submit file and the completed assignment will be sent to the teacher. Hwb+ support materials 7

The pupil may add a comment for the teacher to read if they wish to. Once the assignment has been submitted the following screen will be displayed. 8 Hwb+ support materials

Marking the assignment The teacher will see on their home page on the assignment tool that pupils have submitted their work for marking. Select the piece of work you wish to mark Open the work and annotate in the Office Web Apps as appropriate Add a comment next to the pupils name and click the Return box. Click Save at the top of the screen and the assignment will return to the pupil and will be visible to the pupils in their assignment tool on their home page or in the assignment icon at the top of the page. The teacher can select an option for a pupil to resubmit their assignment if necessary. The teacher can also collect remaining assignments from pupils even if they have not submitted them The teacher also has the option to return all assignments at one time. Hwb+ support materials 9

10 Hwb+ support materials Once an assignment has been set a Drop Box is automatically created. All assignments that the teacher has set will be visible to the teacher in this drop box and any submitted work by the pupils will also be visible here. The pupils will only see their own work in the drop box and no other pupils work. The teacher will see all pupils work that she/ he teaches.
