AMERICAN RIVER COLLEGE HEALTH AND EDUCATION DIVISION 4700 COLLEGE OAK DRIVE SACRAMENTO, CA 95841-4217 TELEPHONE (916) 484-8902 http://www.arc.losrios.edu/ APPLICATION FOR SPRING 2018 IS DUE FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1, 2017 PARAMEDIC APPLICATION PACKET FOR SPRING 2018 PARAMEDIC PROGRAM The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) System provides medical care to community members who are sick or injured. The goal of the program is to prepare individuals to render pre-hospital advanced life support within an organized EMS system. Paramedics respond to emergencies in the pre-hospital setting and render basic and advanced medical treatment before and during transport. In addition to the certification program, students have the option of taking courses, which will lead to the Associate in Science degree. The full-time program begins each spring semester and requires students to meet on campus three days a week (approximately 8 hours per day). The full-time program is a 12-month program. The Paramedic program also offers paramedic academies that have unique and varied schedules. Please check the American River College schedule for the most up-to-date listing of our paramedic offerings. Startup program costs are approximately $2,500.00. The student is responsible for providing uniforms, laboratory fees, malpractice insurance, necessary equipment, and transportation to off-campus laboratory locations. All costs/fees are subject to change. The American River College Paramedic Program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (www.caahep.org) upon the recommendation of the Committee on Accreditation of Educational Programs for the Emergency Medical Services Profession (CoEMSP). Applications for the Spring 2017 semester is currently online at http://www.arc.losrios.edu/programs_of_study/health_and_education/paramedic.htm or from the Health and Education Division office. REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLLMENT TO THE PARAMEDIC PROGRAM 1. Graduation from an accredited high school in the United States or successful completion of the General Education Development (GED) or California High School Proficiency Exam (CHSPE) prior to time of application: a) Students with a high school diploma from a school outside the United States must have transcripts evaluated by a National Association of Credential Evaluation Services (NACES) approved independent agency. Such cases will be evaluated on an individual basis. b) Students who possess an Associate of Arts/Associate of Science degree or higher from a regionally accredited college are exempt from the educational requirement stated above. c) Students who have attended college outside the United States must have transcripts evaluated by a NACES approved independent agency, demonstrating AA/AS degree or higher. 2. Current certification as an EMT-Basic and approximately one year verified recent and appropriate EMS experience (approximately 280 patient contacts). Students with minimal EMT experience may augment their experience using (PMED 106 Emergency Medical Technician Basic, Pre-hospital Practices and Internship, with a grade of "C" or better) or equivalent courses. Questions related to EMS experience must be directed to Dr. Grant Goold, Program Coordinator, at 484-8843. The program admissions committee will assess experience and/or equivalency. 3. A cumulative college GPA of 2.0 and a grade of "C" or better in the following prerequisites: a) BIOL 102 or BIOL 430 and BIOL 431, or other college human anatomy and physiology course with a lab which includes all human systems; and b) PMED 105 or NURSE 320 or equivalent courses. 4. A current Curriculum Planning Summary Sheet NOTE: For the initial evaluation of all transcripts and previous coursework and to determine if the above eligibility requirements have been met, an appointment must be scheduled with an ARC counselor at (916) 484-8572. For course equivalency of pre-paramedic and degree major courses completed outside of the Los Rios Community College District, students must provide course descriptions. REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATE (36.5-43.5 UNITS) BIOL 102 or BIOL 430 and BIOL 431, PMED 105 or NURSE 320, PMED 110, 120, and 130 Prerequisites BIOL 102 or BIOL 430* and BIOL 431 PMED 105 or NURSE 320 (*BIOL 430 has a chemistry prerequisite) These courses may be taken concurrently but prior to enrolling in PMED 110. Associate of Science degrees in (Paramedic) are only provided to students who successfully complete all courses listed for the degree major at American River College. ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS AND APPLICATION PROCESS 1. Students who are interested in applying for the Paramedic program should begin preparing and PLANNING AHEAD as soon as possible by requesting and/or compiling the support documents in Item 3 below to be evaluated and included in the application packet. This process may take several weeks. 2. As soon as you have your paperwork together, call the ARC Counseling department at (916) 484-8572 no later than Friday, November 3, 2017 to schedule an appointment to obtain a Curriculum Planning Summary Sheet for the program. DO NOT WAIT UNTIL THE LAST MINUTE. 3. Student Checklist: The following documents must be brought to the counseling appointment: High school transcript with graduation date highlighted, GED Scores, CHSPE Certificate of Proficiency, or proof of AA/AS degree or higher Current EMT-Basic card and Professional Rescuer or BLS Healthcare Provider card (bring original cards) If applicable, verification of EMT-Basic experience with supportive documentation to include hours of patient contact, description of contacts, and validation from supervisor on original agency letterhead. Do not include observational experiences only. All college transcripts: Unofficial transcripts from the Los Rios Community College District (ARC, CRC, FLC, SCC) Official (sealed) transcripts from schools outside the Los Rios Community College District NOTE: All transcripts must accompany your application; do not have them mailed separately to Admissions & Records or the Counseling department. Copies of course descriptions of prerequisite classes completed outside the Los Rios Community College District for evaluation of equivalency. Descriptions must show clear page numbers, year, and catalog identification. Completed application for Paramedic program 4. At the counseling appointment, the counselor will determine if educational requirements and paramedic prerequisites have been met. Pre-paramedic courses that are in progress will also be noted. In addition, the counselor will evaluate your progress toward graduation requirements (if applicable) and coursework from other colleges for equivalency to ARC courses. The Curriculum Planning Summary Sheet will be completed during this appointment. 5. Submit complete packet and support documentation to the Health and Education office. (See "Student Checklist" on application). Incomplete applications will not be considered. SELECTION PROCESS 1. Only students who meet the educational pre-paramedic requirements and follow the procedures will be considered for the program. Meeting all of these requirements does not guarantee enrollment in the program. 2. Class size will be limited. If the pool is greater than the program can accept, students are chosen based on a computerized random selection process from among the qualified candidates. ACCEPTANCE 1. Students will receive notification of acceptance by mail approximately two (2) weeks after the submission deadline. Please do not call Admissions & Records, the Health and Education office, or the Counseling department, as phone verification will not be provided. 2. Once accepted to the Paramedic Program, students, at their own expense, must provide the following prior to completion of PMED110: a. Health History & Report of Medical Examination with required inoculations b. Drug screening test (non-refundable) c. Current CPR certification (Professional Rescuer from American Red Cross or BLS Healthcare Provider from American Heart Association) d. Proof of malpractice insurance (not refundable) e.
