I>clicker 7 Registration Guide for Instructors

Why Register? If you just want to use i>clicker to get anonymous feedback in class, the experience can almost be described as plug and play. However, in most cases, you will want to know which students answered your questions and what responses they gave so you can assign credits for participation or performance. To associate student names with i>clicker responses, you ll need to have students register their i>clicker remotes, each distinguished by a unique ID printed on the back. We suggest you read the I>clicker Synchronization Guide before embarking on this one as the Synchronization guide covers some basics, such as how to create a course, prepare an i>clicker roster, etc., that are essential for all the registration methods to be addressed in this guide. This guide will cover the following topics: In-class (Roll Call) Registration Roll call registration is recommended for batch registering classes of fewer than 50 students. Online Registration Online registration is recommended for batch registering classes of more than 50 students. Loan Clicker Occasionally you will find yourself in a situation where you need to register individual students only for a particular session, such as when a student forgets to bring his or her remote or brought in somebody else s remote by mistake. The Loan Clicker feature allows you to loan a remote to a student or allow a student to temporarily use another remote. Individual Registration Sometimes you may have students joining your class after batch registration is over, or students who somehow did not register successfully online. Apart from using roll-call registration and the Loan Clicker feature for registering a small number of students, you can also manually register them within the i>clicker Gradebook. Unregistering Students and Removing Student Data Sometimes you need to unregister a student (disassociate a student with a remote ID) or remove the student and the remote ID altogether, such as in cases of changed clickers or students dropping your class. You can easily unregister a student or remove individual student data within the i>clicker Gradebook. 1

In-class Registration In-class (or role call ) registration is an efficient way to register students in smaller classes (fewer than 50 students). To use roll call registration, 1) Project your computer screen and open the i>clicker application. 2) Select your course and choose Start New Session to bring up the floating Session Tool bar. 3) On the Session Toolbar, click on the down arrow next to the Options (gear) button and select Roll Call Registration. The Roll Call Registration window will appear showing each student name, ID, and a 2-letter code. (See the screenshot on the next page.) 4) Instruct students to use their clickers to enter the 2-letter code next to their name. 5) Students who accidentally register their clicker remote to the wrong name should press DD on the remote to clear the incorrect registration and then re-enter the correct code. By default, the block flashes green to show the code was received and then turns grey to show the remote has been registered. The student names appearing on a white background are not yet registered. If there are more students in your course than will fit on the screen, the screen moves to the next page when the timer reaches zero. The program cycles through all of the students until you close this window. 2

2-letter codes You can choose to change the setting for the roll call process. For example, you can have the student names disappear from the window (vs. turn green) after a code is entered. 3

Roll Call settings can be accessed by selecting the course name and then Settings on the main page of the i>clicker application, and then in the pop-up window, selecting the Roll Call tab on the top. Online Registration If you choose online registration, you need to instruct students to register their remotes in their MyConcordia Portal and you will need to synchronize the registration database with i>clicker later on. See the I>clicker Synchronization guide for details. To register online, students will 1) Log in to the MyConcordia Portal at http://www.myconcordia.ca. 2) In the MyConcordia menu, select Student Services. 3) Select i>clicker registration. 4) Enter your i>clicker ID (the number printed on the back of the i>clicker remote) and click Enter. (Note that the clicker ID may contain the number zero, but will not contain the letter O.) Loaning a Clicker Sometimes one or more students may forget to bring their clickers to class. I>clicker allows loaning clickers to these students for that particular class session. 1 1) From the i>clicker floating menu bar, click on the down arrow and select Loan Clicker. 2) In the window that opens up, type in the remote ID of the loan clicker. 3) Select the student s ID from the drop down menu (sometimes going upward) labeled Student. 2 3 4) Select Temporary (session) for Duration. 4

Individual Registration Occasionally, you may have students joining your class after registration and synchronization is already done, or students who have registered unsuccessfully (e.g. typo with the remote ID during online registration), or students who accidentally brought a friend or roommate's remote. I>clicker can address all the above scenarios with its capability for manual registration of individual students. You can use the Loan Clicker feature elaborated in the previous section to register a student for the entire term by selecting the Permanent (term) option instead of Temporary (session). However, it is easier to do it within the Gradebook. To register a student from within the Gradebook, 1) Make sure you have added the student in your roster.txt so the student s name can appear in the Gradebook. ( For more details on creating and editing the roster, see the I>clicker Synchronization Guide) 2) Click on the name of the student. The Student Details window will appear. 3) Click the Add button to bring up the Add Clicker ID window. Type the student s remote ID in the field provided and click Ok. Alternatively, if the student involved has participated in at least one voting session, you can register him or her by working from the student s remote ID: 1) Click the remote ID in the Gradebook. The unregistered clicker window will appear. See the screenshot that follows. 5

2) From the drop down menu labelled Assign to student ID, select the student ID. 3) Click Save. The student will be registered instantly. The remote ID will disappear from the Gradebook interface and the student s name will turn blue like the other names already registered. For the student, the difference between being registered this way and registering online is that, with manual registration by the instructor, the association between the student and his or her remote ID is set only for this particular course; while with online registration, the association is set for all the classes using i>clicker for that particular student. Unregistering a Student and Removing Student Data You may have students who voted in only a few sessions and then dropped your class. This 6

section will show you how to unregister a student and how to remove student data from i>clicker. To unregister a student 1) Open the Gradebook. 2) Click on the student s name. The Student Details window will appear. 1) Select the remote ID(s) and then click on Remove. The student and his or her remote ID(s) will be disassociated. 7

Note that after you unregister a student, the student s name will remain in the Gradebook but turn red; his or her remote ID(s) will reappear, also in red, with the voting results staying with the remote ID. See the before and after screenshot. Before Unregistering a Student After Unregistering a Student To remove student data I>clicker 7 does not allow one-click deletion of student data. When the student you want to remove from i>clicker is registered, you can delete the student s name first and then delete his or her remote ID(s) that will reappear in the Gradebook as a result of this action. Keep in mind that when you delete the student s name in the Gradebook, it will also disappear from the roster. Likewise, if you delete the student s name from the roster file, it will also disappear from the Gradebook. 8

When a student is not registered, you can delete the student s name and remote ID(s) in any order. To delete a remote ID, 1) Open the Gradebook. 2) Click on the remote ID. The Unregistered Clicker window will appear. 2) Click on Remove and then Save. 9

Attention: In the Student Details window that is accessed by clicking on a student s name in the Gradebook, if you click on the Delete Student button, the remote ID of that student will remain in the gradebook, retaining the voting results. You will need to delete the remote ID separately; if you select a remote ID and click on Remove, the student and the remote ID will be disassociated, but both student name and remote ID will remain in the Gradebook appearing in red, again, with the voting results staying with the remote ID. This means you will need to remove the student s name and remote ID separately to purge the entire data for that student. Be careful: if you want to reassign the remote to another student, you will still need to remove the remote ID and add it back later, or else the new student will inherit the previous student s voting result for that particular session. 10
