Special Note 2 Course Restrictions (America) Telfer School of Management, the University of Ottawa Exchange students can only take courses in the following disciplinary areas offered by Ottawa Business French (as a second language course) Finance (only a few courses available) Course list may vary from semester to semester 12

Special Note 3 Boston College Course Restrictions (America) Due to high demand for Finance courses, Boston College cannot make any guarantees about enrollment in the classes requested. For students with a major/minor in Finance, you should not plan to take Finance core course(s) at Boston College 13

The Faculty Student Exchange Programme Non-first and non-final year full-time FBE UG students in 2017-18 under 4-year curriculum The Faculty recommends students to have a TOEFL score of 570 (paper-based)/230 (computer-based)/85 (internetbased) OR an IELTS score of 7.0 for overseas exchange Submit the result slip with the application form Expired one is acceptable for internal assessment ONLY Most updated one is required for application to the host institution The result must remain valid when you apply for exchange Students should check if they fulfill the language requirement specified by the host institutions Examples of language requirement (for reference only): 18

The Faculty Student Exchange Programme Question: Why do I need to submit a proof of English proficiency? It is required by most of the institutions Examples: Country Institution Language Requirement (for reference only) U.K. Manchester Business School, University of Manchester IELTS: 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6 in each component) U.K. University of Exeter IELTS: 7.0 overall (with a minimum of 6 in each component) TOEFL(iBT): 100 with minimum scores of 21 for writing, 21 for listening, 22 for reading and 23 for speaking U.S. University of Maryland TOEFL(iBT): 90 with minimum sectional scores of 22 IELTS: 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6.5 in each component) U.S. University of Georgia TOEFL: 550 (paper) 214 (CBT) 80 (ibt) IELTS: 6.5 Australia University of Sydney TOEFL(iBT): 85 overall + minimum 19 in writing + minimum 17 in reading, speaking, and listening IELTS: 6.5 overall (with a minimum of 6 in each component) * Please refer to the host institutions factsheets for details of the requirements* 19

Application Guidelines FBE students can only apply for ONE exchange programme, i.e., either HKUWW or FBE exchange programme Faculty Student Exchange Programme: ONE-semester Exchange Late and incomplete applications shall NOT be accepted and processed 20

Academic Matters Whether or not your preferred courses can be transferred back towards your HKU degree curriculum to fulfill graduation requirement Study plan during and after exchange Students on exchange via different exchange programmes Should apply for leave of absence & credit transfer via the Faculty of Business and Economics Note: Year 4 and Year 5 BBA(Law)&LLB students should apply for leave of absence & credit transfer via the Faculty of Law 23

Credit Transfer Policy Students shall take a FULL course load stipulated by the host institution. Examples- University of Edinburgh 3 courses per semester Bentley University 5 courses per semester University of Manchester 6 courses per semester Credit overload or underload during exchange is NOT advised, except under special circumstances in which Faculty approval is required. 24

Credit Transfer Policy Credit transfer is considered on the basis of: course content equivalence total learning time involved in a particular course (i.e., hours include both in-class and outside classroom learning activities) The normal study load of a 6-credit course: 120 hours 180 hours of learning activities. For European Institutions: 1 ECTS credit = 1 HKU credit 25

Credit Transfer Policy 1 semester of full time study load at host institution = 1 full semester s credit at HKU Students taking a full course load abroad will be awarded a full course load of HKU credits, i.e., 30 credits per semester. 26

Credit Transfer Policy The transferred credits should be rounded to the nearest multiple of 6. If courses are relatively short, students can pair up two relevant courses, or more, for transfer as one HKU course. Requirements for Dean s Honours List Students joining one-semester exchange are eligible to be recommended to the Dean s Honours List provided that you fulfill the following conditions: Achieved a yearly GPA of 3.6 (excluding grades obtained during exchange) No fail courses (including courses taken at HKU as well as during exchange) Studied in HKU for at least one regular semester during the year; and Completed at least 24 credits successfully in each regular semester Students joining whole-year exchange are ineligible for being recommended onto the Dean s Honours List 28

Enquiry sessions To enhance your understanding of the Faculty Exchange Programme during the application period, enquiry sessions will be held on January 18 & 22, 2018. The enquiry sessions operate on a first-come, first-served basis. Registration is not required. Students are welcome to drop in and consult the Faculty administrators on various matters concerning the Faculty Exchange Programme. 32

Application period: from 9:00 a.m., January 12, 2018 (Friday) to 5:00 p.m., January 25, 2018 (Thursday) Indicate five choices of host institutions in priority order, you also need to indicate if you will accept an alternative offer other than your choices Late or incomplete applications by the deadline of January 25, 2018 shall NOT be accepted and processed 33

Notes on Application to U.S. Institutions Given the tight nomination and application deadlines specified by U.S. institutions, students who intend to go on exchange in the U.S. shall prepare the below documents in early-february (before exchange allocation result announcement): Original transcript (apply via http://www.ase.hku.hk/asoffice/) Bank proof (please check the required amount specified by the host institutions) The objective is to facilitate smooth nomination and application processes. It does not under any circumstances confer upon you the placement of U.S. institutions. In the event that you get an offer from the U.S. institutions but that you are unable to furnish us with the application documents by late-february, we shall withdraw the offer as the U.S. institutions shall NOT accept nomination without a full set of application documents. 36
