Type in your User ID (your Axxxxxxxx from Student ID), Click Continue You will be asked two challenge questions to verify your identity. Once these questions are answered, you will be asked to create your own new password. Follow remaining instructions to activate your account. 05/10/2016 version 5 P a g e

2. Notifications you set this for your own account. Notifications apply to all courses cannot change notifications for individual courses. Notifications include items such as, course activities, discussions, and others. There are four options for how you want to receive notices: 1) ASAP 2) Daily 3) Weekly 4) Not at all. 05/10/2016 version 8 P a g e

B. Dashboard the first thing you see when you log in to Canvas and shows an overview of all activity. The Dashboard will help you see what is happening in all your courses and allows you to figure out what to do next. There are two options to view, either a course with icons or the Recent Activity list. 1) Recent Activity contains a stream of recent notifications from all your courses, including announcements, discussions, assignments, and conversations. Activities are indicated by activity type and display an icon for the activity. New or unread activities are shown by the blue indicator dot. Recent Activity items remain for four weeks. You can view details of each activity by clicking on the Show More link. On the Sidebar there are three sections 2) To Do shows assignments or events that need attention now. Items remain in this section for two weeks. 3) Coming Up shows assignments and events coming due in the next 7 days 4) Recent Feedback shows assignments with feedback from your instructor Note: To return to the Dashboard at any time, click on the GCSC logo in the Global Navigation Bar 05/10/2016 version 9 P a g e

C. Courses Click on Courses A list of all your courses will show up. Below that will be All Courses. Courses must be starred to show up here. If you click on All Courses there will be a listing of all your courses. Any course you want to show up on the Course Drop Down Bar must be starred. If it is not starred, the star will be greyed out. Courses available to you will be in blue text. Courses within the current term dates but not yet available to you are in gray text and include an unpublished note or tag. Courses are always listed alphabetically Click on the course you want and it takes you to the course home page which is set by the instructor. 05/10/2016 version 10 P a g e

D. Calendar can view everything to do for all courses in one place by week or month. Month view is the default. Can add a new event by clicking on the + sign Can edit an event by clicking on the event Undated items are listed on the right There are different icons for different items, such as assignment, discussion, quiz, etc. Notice once you complete an item it is marked through on the calendar. E. Inbox where all new notifications will show, based on your notification preferences. F. III. Courses Click the course you want to work in and you will go to the course home page. Remember the course home page is set by the instructor. Most home pages will include the Course Syllabus, probably a link that says start here or open me first 1) Along the left side of the home page will be the links available to you in the course. This will vary by instructor. Only links that are live will show up. Examples are: Announcements, Assignments, Discussion, Grades, Syllabus, Pages, Quizzes, Modules, Lockdown Browser, and others. 2) To Do 3) Recent Feedback 4) Center are listed your assignments with the syllabus, first. 05/10/2016 version 12 P a g e

A. Announcements This is where your instructor will post all announcements. You may or may not be able to reply to the instructor. B. Assignments This page shows all assignments due within the course. Can be organized by date or type. This one is organized by date. Assignments are things that you turn in, like a word document. Quizzes are anything taken and graded on the computer, like exams, finals, etc. 05/10/2016 version 13 P a g e

C. Discussions All discussions will be listed here. This will be a little different than Angel. A student would reply to the instructor to start the discussion and then reply to other students as instructed. The student may not see any responses until their reply is posted. D. Grades Sorted chronological by assignment due date then assignments with no due dates. There are several icons on the grade page. You can hover over those icons and it will show what the icon means. E. Quizzes list all the quizzes with your course. Shows you whether the quiz is open or closed, due date, total points and how many questions. F. Modules shows everything for your course by Modules if your instructor has set the course up this way. Examples: Introduction, Week 1, Week 2, etc. or Chapter 1, Chapter 2, etc. or Unit 1, Unit 2, etc. 05/10/2016 version 14 P a g e

IV. Course Activities Log on to your Canvas account and go into the course SANDBOX-Barbara Cline This course is set up where the syllabus button is the home page. If you click on Home you will go to this page. You see your syllabus and a list of assignments. A. Course Syllabus to view the course syllabus, click on the link. In most courses this will be a word document. B. Post a Discussion click on the discussions link. 1) Discussion 2) Available Dates 3) Hover over the icon and it shows that you must post in order to review other posts. 05/10/2016 version 15 P a g e

C. Take a Quiz click on the quizzes link. All course quizzes will be listed here. There are details such as the date available, number of points, and how many questions. Click on the quiz to start it. If there is a time limit, this is where it will show. Take the quiz and submit. Whether or not you can see your responses, correct and incorrect will be determined by how the instructor sets up the quiz. D. Submit an Assignment click on the assignments link. All assignments are listed. Click on Week 1 assignment. Go into word and type a few sentences for the assignment. Save the document on the desktop. When you are done, click the Submit Assignment button. Upload your assignment and submit. 05/10/2016 version 16 P a g e

Watching a Video Videos could be in multiple places in your course. Assignments, Announcements, Syllabus, etc. Wherever the video is located just click on the link to view. 05/10/2016 version 17 P a g e

E. Sending an Email to your instructor there are two options. Option 1 1) Click on the Inbox 2) Go to the top and click on the dropdown box for the course you want to email your instructor in 3) Click on compose new message 4) Go to the TO line and click the icon at the far right, this will be for who you want to send the email to click teacher (students, etc.) 5) Type your subject, message and hit send 05/10/2016 version 18 P a g e
