What if...emotional intelligence (EQ) was valued equally as much as the intelligence quotient (IQ)? What would be different? Students and educators would take responsibility for their actions, focusing on an improved self-awareness who are overwhelmed would manage exposing reactive behavior to build rapport with others would be effective collaborators, in planning sessions and/or meetings and would be intentional and productive for all parties involved Emotions matter for all of us and especially for children. How we feel affects our learning, the decisions we make, how we treat others, and our personal well-being. - Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence Copyright 2016 Equilibria Services, Ltd. E-Colors in Education E-Colors and Personal Intervention are processes in human development and performance. Both E-Colors and Personal Intervention are foundational to having greater self and team awareness. Our nonprofit places an emphasis on leadership, communication and the overall organizational health by following the framework of the 8 Essentials of Intentional Leadership. Learning & Continuous Improvement Self & Team Awareness Shared Vision & Values Accountability 8 ESSENTIALS AN EQUILIBRIA COACHING TOOL Clarity of Roles & Processes Commitment Trust Diversity & Inclusion 5 Copyright 2016 Equilibria Services, Ltd. E-Colors Gives learners an opportunity to Reduce friction and increase collective understanding Tailor ones own natural communication style to enhance engagement with different personalities Improve relationships through appreciation and understanding diverse perspectives Personal Intervention Offers the understanding of making intentional choices to prevent unintentional consequences Recognizes that there is a better understanding of how to manage our natural instinctive reactions that can cause regret and grief Provides a mechanism for stepping out of our natural comfort zones by pressing internal pause and play buttons to speak up or listen-truly listen Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all. 8 Essentials of Intentional Leadership Developing high-performing teams require intentionality. The 8 Essentials offer... An excellent framework to support young leaders in delivering organizational goals at the individual and team level Alignment and inspiration for a team to know what needs to be achieved and be motivated to contribute their best Help to build relationships and connections with people to add value to the aspirations of each individuals, students and staff Enhancement to the growth, capabilities and skills needed for schools to succeed, while developing internal expertise The stress students and educators feel is reaching epidemic levels. While many pressures cannot be eliminated budgets are tight and expectations for high academic achievement are well-founded schools can do more to create emotionally intelligent learning and working environments. Thomas Journey Shortly after introductions, we were told that there was a 7-yearold boy by the name of Thomas, a Blue/Green, that wanted to share his E-Colors story. Before E-Colors, Thomas would like to do things his way and he was stubborn and did not listen to his peers. Eventually, Thomas actions got him into fights on the school bus resulting in his removal from riding the school bus. Only after learning about E-Colors and Personal Intervention did Thomas understand his strengths and potential limiters. He also understood that he had to hit his internal pause and play buttons whenever he felt he was going to react poorly. This new-found awareness was shared by Thomas himself to a group of educators attending a Leadership Institute. Thomas is currently a thriving 10-year-old. Conflict resolution is a skill he practices daily. Copyright 2016 Equilibria Services, Ltd. All rights reserved. 8

Ways to Enhance Emotional Intelligence Practice self-awareness and observation. The first step before becoming more emotionally intelligent is to understand how you feel, why you feel it and recognizing how you might respond in a more productive manner. Once you recognize your behaviors, you can choose to change them if necessary. Are you reacting or responding? Pay attention to whether or not you react to situations or respond to situations. When you react to the world around you, many times you end up making decisions that aren t the best choice. When you take the time to slow down and consciously decide how to respond, the result is usually better for everyone involved. Don t allow yourself to be stuck in adversity. Sometimes at work, and in your personal life, the going gets tough. Do you bounce back from adversity or let it keep you down? Next time you re faced with a difficult situation in business or at home, ask yourself what lessons you can learn and figure out the best path for changing your situation instead of letting it keep you down. ฏ Find a mentor. It may seem counter-intuitive to improving your emotional intelligence, but sometimes the best thing you can do is surround yourself with emotionally intelligent people who consistently make good decisions and conscious choices. You become the five people you spend the most time with, so choose wisely. Adapted from 5 Ways Emotional Intelligence Predicts Your Success by Blair Nicole. Copyright 2016 Equilibria Services, Ltd.
