Topics include body organization, homeostasis, cytology, histology, and the integumentary, skeletal, muscular, nervous, special senses, and endocrine systems. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of principles of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships. HYBRID COURSE DEFINITION: A hybrid course consists of a blending of face-to-face class meetings with a portion of the class also being taught on-line. This reduces the number of days a student will meet face-to-face with an Instructor; however, the content of the course remains the same as a traditional. Certain classes will have a portion, or all, of the lecture, OR, similarly, all, or a portion of the lab, taught on-line. Should you be considering a hybrid course, please be aware that a portion of this class will require the student to have access to a computer and the internet. There may be additional fees associated with the purchase of materials necessary to complete the course.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an in-depth understanding of anatomy and physiology and their interrelationships of the following topics: 1. BLACKBOARD (BB): Lecture outlines, lab material, articles, web page links, announcements, and test scores may be posted on my Blackboard. Please frequent BB weekly for announcements. If class does not meet due to my absence, please look for posted assignments on BB. GRADING POLICY: The course consists of three objective exams, each worth 100 points and two labs, each worth 50 points. During the semester you can obtain 10 points added to a test grade by doing a 3-5 minute teaching demonstration to the class of some an A&P topic. At the conclusion of the semester, the total number of points divided by 4 will be your final grade. All Tests are calculated the same. Therefore, to calculate your final grade, add together the scores from all your tests and labs and ANY EXTRA CREDIT AND divide by the TOTAL NUMBER BY FOUR (4). Grading scale follows that as stated in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook: A 92 100 B 84 91 C 76 83 D 68 75 F 0 67
EXTRA CREDIT: There will be no individual extra credit. Any extra credit will be added to the total number of points at the end of the semester. This course requires commitment from you. It may be necessary for you to limit your work schedule, your home schedule, and your course load in order for you to be successful in this course. You will earn your grade. One day my life or someone s life that I care about very much may rest in your hands. MAKE-UP POLICY: Tests may be taken early at the discretion of the instructor. If a test is taken late, there will be an automatic 10% deduction. There are no make-up medical simulation labs. ACADEMIC HONESTY: Plagiarism is using as your own the words or ideas of another, whether written or oral. When you use material from a source, you must quote or paraphrase accurately and properly cite the information. Failure to do so is considered plagiarism. Examples of plagiarism include word-for-word copying without correctly indicating that you are quoting, inaccurate quoting and paraphrasing, and incomplete or missing documentation. Purchasing a paper or copying someone else's work and submitting it as your own are also plagiarism. Any misrepresentation of the source in your writing or speaking would constitute a form of plagiarism. Whether intentional or unintentional, plagiarism is not acceptable and will result in the student being assigned a grade of zero for the assignment. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Since you are paying hard earned $$ to see me, I expect to see you!!! Students must be in attendance at least eighty (80%) percent of the clock hours of a course to receive credit for the course. (CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook). Since BIO 168 is a 96-hour course, you may miss 18 hours - not 18 class meetings. These hours include both lecture and lab hours. Exceeding the 18-hour limit will result in an automatic final grade of F. Attendance will be taken in every lecture and lab class by section numbers. You will be responsible for signing the attendance sheets for both lecture and lab. Failure to sign in will result in an absence. I FORGOT IS NOT A VALID EXCUSE! If you sign for another student who is not in attendance, you will receive a final grade of F. If you arrive at class more than 10 minutes late, or leave more than 10 minutes early, it will count as half an absence. If you cannot attend your scheduled lecture or lab class, you may attend another lecture or lab that week provided that the same material is being covered and there is an available seat for you. Attending another lecture or lab would not count against your absence. Contact me to confirm availability. If you cannot make up the missed lecture and/or lab, you will be counted absent. It is your responsibility to find out what information you missed. Therefore, it is your responsibility to get a copy of the notes and any announcements from a fellow student. There will be material discussed in every lecture and lab that is not included in the outlines. Any material discussed in lecture and lab is fair game for tests. Therefore, don t miss class!!!!
If your work schedule, family commitments, or health issues prevent you from attending class on a regular basis, a withdrawal is highly recommended. WITHDRAWALS: You are responsible for noting the deadline for withdrawal from the course. I will not turn in any withdrawal form to the registration office. This is your responsibility. You will find the deadline date in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook. Withdrawals will not be given once the 18 hours of absences has been exceeded. notify the instructor within three (3) school days of receiving the request. Students will be given the opportunity to make up any tests or other work missed due to the excused absence and should work with their instructors in advance of the excused absence to delineate how to make up the missed coursework (N.C.G.S. 115D-5). GENERAL CLASS INFORMATION: 1. Children are not allowed to attend lectures nor labs. 2. The use of cell phones is prohibited during class except for Emergency Personnel. 3. Federal Law and CFCC Policy prohibit releasing grades by e-mail or by phone. 4. Students are welcome to tape the class for their own personal use. 5. All tests and assignments are to be your own work. Cheating on either a test, assignment or quiz will result in a grade of 0 (zero) on that work. 6. All tests and test questions are the property of the CFCC Science Department. All tests will be turned in with your answer keys at the end of testing. Only your answer keys will be returned to you upon grading. 7. Most of our lab work will be working on case studies, the simulator or demonstration models. However, there may be some dissection. We will follow strict laboratory safety procedures when dissecting and performing experiments. Detailed instructions will be given prior to these labs. 8. CLOSE TOED SHOES MUST BE WORN DURING ALL LABS.
Lectures and Lab Information LECTURES: Material from the textbook is covered during each lecture period. Students are expected to read the relevant textbook chapters before the lecture. If lecture is missed, it is the responsibility of the student to get information from other students and/or Blackboard to catch up. There will be approximately 3 written tests covering lecture material. The format may include multiple-choice, fill-in, matching, short answer, identification and/or essay. These tests will be given during the regular scheduled lecture time. Grades are posted on as soon as I have them graded. LABS: Lab includes models, dissection, videos, and study guide exercises that supplement and support the lecture. Students are expected to attend and participate in all scheduled labs. Safety is of the utmost importance; therefore, all students are expected to follow proper lab procedures and act according to lab safety rules. Students will be instructed in lab safety procedures prior to each lab. Although there will not be a separate lab grade, any information covered during lab will be integrated into the lecture test on the specific section. NO MEDICAL ADVICE: The Anatomy & Physiology Instructors on staff at CFCC are educational instructors. See your doctor for medical consultations. ATTENDANCE & EVALUATION POLICY: Since this is a hybrid class, we do not meet face-to-face lecture. Therefore, there are mandatory online assignments that MUST be completed in order to pass this class. These assignments have a ZERO-TOLERANCE policy, so 100% of the online assignments, whether they are chapter questions, case studies, or critical thinking questions, MUST BE TURNED IN by the assigned time by email. LATE ASSIGNMENT POLICY: If there are extenuating circumstances (alien abduction is not an excuse), late assignments will be due 10 days from the ORIGINAL due date. A possible 10% grade deduction may be given for every late assignment. Make sure that when you turn in the late assignment, you put LATE ASSIGNMENT in the subject matter with your last name and section number.
