Oswego County BOCES Evening Career Programs Oswego County BOCES offers a wide variety of evening training programs for adults who are beginning their career, changing careers, displaced workers, or those upgrading their training in their current careers. All courses are held at the Oswego County BOCES campus. For additional questions, please call (315) 963-4256. The following programs are currently available: Nail Technician This 250-hour class offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience and apply classroom theory as they work toward meeting the requirements to take the New York State licensing exam. Students are expected to demonstrate the ability to work independently and with others, as well as have appropriate decision-making skills. The demand for licensed professional nail technicians is expected to grow and employment opportunities for those who continue to upgrade their skills should be excellent. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion. Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning 200 hr. Program: This 200 hour program is a comprehensive hands-on training program covering the critical aspects of the HVAC/R field offered in three parts. Part One is introduction to tools, shop, test equipment, shop/home equipment, shop math, Ohms Law. Part Two is basic air conditioning, basic heating, basic house electrical, basic schematic reading and wiring diagrams, basic troubleshooting, and work safety. Part Three is EPA introduction, basic understanding of the EPA rules, federal EPA requirements, EPA 609, EPA 608, and test for EPA. Precision Machining-New: This 360-hour program is divided into 7 modules that takes the student through the principles of machining from mills, to lathes and CNC operation. The modules include Safety, Measurement, Tools and Gauges; Cutting Edges and Drill Press; Engine Lathe; Mills; Grinder; CNC Lathe and Mill; and student project. Other topics will include the properties of metals, how to lay out and set up a job, how to use measuring devices such as the micrometer and vernier caliper, and how to read working drawings. Each module builds on skills taught in prior sessions and is individualized. Students who successfully complete the entire course will be ready to enter the workforce and an entry level Machinist. You can also sign up for individual modules to enhance your existing skills as a machinist. Welding 32 Hour TIG, MIG, or Basic Stick Arc: An introduction to various welds. This program is designed to prepare students for general fillet welding in the field and to introduce skills needed for certified welding. Welding 320 Hour Certified Program: This course is designed to take the student from beginning to end. Student will be prepared to take the DOT Certified Pipe Welding test upon completion of this program. The AWS Entry Level Welder test costs $15 and is taken here. In order to be scheduled for this test a student must pass a 2 guided bend test, a workmanship test and a 225 questions general knowledge test. Welding Basic Repair & Maintenance 60 hr. Program: This program is for people who want to use welding to repair and/or maintain a variety of equipment and machinery. The program covers basic stick arc welding, oxy fuel gas welding and cutting, gas metal arc welding (MIG), plasma arc cutting, and carbon arc gouging. 1
CDL A / Heavy Equipment Operation: This 160-hour program combines the Commercial Driving License (CDL) A with Heavy Equipment Operation (HEO) knowledge. CDL-A incorporates 25 hours of classroom learning with 75 hours of tractor trailer driving instruction. The 60-hour HEO portion of the program is presented in the classroom for 20 hours in four modules; Safety, Identification of Equipment, Operating Techniques and Grades. The 40 hour hands on portion of the HEO training follows the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) National Standards on a bulldozer, excavator, backhoe and skid steer. Students practice on state-of-the-art equipment. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion and take a Road Test for the CDL A license CDL B / Heavy Equipment Operation: This 140 hour program combines Commercial Driving License (CDL) B with Heavy Equipment Operation (HEO) knowledge. CDL-B incorporates 15 hours of classroom learning with 65 hours of dump truck driving instruction. The 60-hour HEO portion of the program is presented in the classroom for 20 hours in four modules; Safety, Identification of Equipment, Operating Techniques and Grades. The 40 hour hands on portion of the HEO training follows the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) National Standards on a bulldozer, excavator, backhoe and skid steer. Students practice on state-of-the-art equipment. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion and take a Road Test for the CDL B license. Heavy Equipment Operation This 60-=hour program is presented in the classroom for 20 hours in four modules, ; Safety, Identification of Equipment, Operating Techniques and Grades. Once a student has applied and secured funding, they must pass a physical and drug test set up through BOCES. CDL A Tractor Trailer Beginner s Program: In this 100-hour course, students will be given 25 hours of classroom and 75 hours of tractor trailer training in driving safely, pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection, basic control of your vehicle, managing space and speed, seeing hazards, emergencies, skid control and recovery, transporting cargo safely, air brake, combination vehicles, doubles and triples, tank vehicles, and hazardous materials. Students will participate in road training in the following areas: backing and parallel parking and docking, city driving, road driving and drop and hook. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion and take a Road Test for the CDL A license 2
CDL B Dump Truck Beginner s. Program: In this 80-hour program students will be given 15 hours of classroom and 65 hours of dump truck training in driving safely, pr-trip and post-trip vehicle inspection, basic control of your vehicle, managing space and speed, seeing hazards, emergencies, skid control and recovery and transporting cargo safely. Students will participate in road training. Students who successfully complete the course will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion and take a Road Test for the CDL B license. CDL-A (Tractor Trailer) Road only for those with some experience:: This class is for those needing up to 80 hours of road time who already have some classroom and/or road experience in CDL-A Applicants will be assessed by instructors to ascertain level of skill. Classes meet at various times Monday through Friday. Students who successfully complete the hurs will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion. Student must be 21 years of age to take the CDL-A program. Applicants must have a Drivining Abstract and Permit prior to starting the class. Once a student has applied and secured funding, they must pass a physical and drug test. This test must be paid for before it is scheduled by BOCES and before the student starts the class. Students set up and pay for their own road test. CDL Refresher This is an as needed class. Applicants will also be assessed by instructors to ascertain level of skill. Classes meet at various times Monday through Friday per assessed student need. Students who successfully complete the hours will receive a BOCES Certificate of Completion. Student must be 21 years of age to take this program. Applicants must have a Driving Abstract and Permit prior to starting the class. Once a student has applied and secured funding, they must pass a physical and drug test. This test must be paid for before it is scheduled by BOCES and before student starts the class. For those requiring a road test, the student is responsible for scheduling and payment of the test. 3

REFUND SCHEDULE 1. If a student drops within the first 10% of a program, 90 % of the program cost is refunded and 10% is due BOCES. 2. If a student drops within the first 15% of a program, 70% of the program cost is refunded and 30% is due BOCES 3. If a student drops within the first 20% of a program, 50% of the program cost is refunded and 50% is due BOCES 4. If a student drops within the first 25% of a program, 30% of the program cost is refunded and 70% is due BOCES 5.
