CEIAG CAREERS EDUCATION, INFORMATION, ADVICE AND GUIDANCE

A Career could include: Full-time Education or Training Paid employment Gap years Resting Unemployment Voluntary work Part-time work

The Changing Jobs Market Work is going to become even more bitty and insecure. The concept of a job for life has seemed outmoded for a while now. In the future, it seems doubtful whether jobs as we know them will exist at all. Many, of course, will be done away with by the much-prophesied automated takeover of everything from truck driving to brain surgery. But that is only half the story. Something more basic is under threat: the entire edifice of office-based, nine-to-five employment that has defined our working lives for at least a century. (A job for life: the new economy and the rise of the artisan career, Financial Times, 21st April 2017) Increase in flexible, remote working practices Increase in self employment This changing career landscape demands a different skillset in our young people enterprise, communication, adaptability are key skills

Definition of Career An individual s progression through learning and work

Career Planning Self Awareness Opportunity Awareness Transitions Skills Decision Making Skills

Strengths Weaknesses Self Awareness Values and Aspirations Attitude Towards Risk We want to encourage a positive self image and help students to develop appropriate levels of self confidence.

Opportunity Awareness Key Stage 4 Post 16 Higher Education Knowledge of a range of career opportunities and the job market Understanding of the qualities, attitudes and skills needed for employability

Transition Skills Job hunting skills The application and selection process CVs Interviews Cope with new situations and change

Decision Making Skills The importance of making informed and realistic decisions. We want to encourage students to have high aspirations and to be ambitious but at the same time be realistic and consider a range of alternative career options.

Year 9 Option Choices Think about: Subjects related to possible jobs. This could relate to the content or skills you will develop Subjects that you enjoy and find interesting Subjects where the learning style and method of assessment match your strengths Subjects in which you are likely to get the highest grades A balanced range of courses e.g. a practical subject to balance a lot of academic subjects.

Year 9 Option Choices Don t choose subjects because: You like the teacher You think it might be an easy option without too much homework You think you might get put in a group with your friends

Mission Statement To provide students with the skills and knowledge to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. To help students develop into responsible adults who make a positive contribution to society.
