Report of the Science Academies Lecture-Workshop on Recent Developments in Chemistry A two day Science Academies Lecture Workshop on Recent Developments in Chemistry was held in Scott Christian College (Autonomous), Nagercoil on 21, 22 nd October 2016. The Lecture workshop was sponsored by the Science Academies, Indian Academy of Science (IASc) Bengaluru, Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and National Academy of Science (NASI) New Delhi. The Lecture workshop was organized by the Department of Chemistry and Research Centre, Scott Christian College (Autonomous). Dr. R. Ramaraj, Emeritus Professor and Former Head, School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University was the Convener and Dr. G. Allen Gnana Raj, Associate Professor of Scott Christian College was the Coordinator of this programme. The main theme of the Lecture Workshop was Recent Developments in Chemistry a topic of Research interest which covers various disciplines of Chemistry like Photochemistry, Nanochemistry, Organic synthesis, Spectroscopy, Coordination Chemistry. This Lecture Workshop was intended mainly for the local students and college teachers of this region. Eminent Professors from various Science Academies were invited to deliver lectures on advanced developments in various fields of chemistry. The workshop was envisioned to have the insight of the basic concepts of chemistry to be clear and to expose them to various new and advanced techniques in the field of research. A total of 10 lectures were given by resource persons. About 150 participants (faculty, PG students, research scholars) from various institutions participated in this two day lecture workshop. The following team of Professors enlightened the participants by their lectures. 1. Dr. S. Chandrasekaran, SERB, Distinguished fellow, Department of Organic Chemistry IISc, Bengaluru. 2. Dr. S. Natarajan, Solid State & Structural Chemistry (SSCU), IISc, Bengaluru. 3. Prof. P. Anbarasan, Department of Chemistry, IITM, Chennai. 4. Dr. Suresh Das, Executive Vice President of Kerala State Council for Science, Thiruvananthapuram. 5. Dr. V. Karunakaran, Senior Scientist, NIIST, Thiruvananthapuram. 6. Dr. R. Ramaraj, Emeritus Scientist, School of Chemistry, Madurai Kamaraj University.

Anbarasan, IITM, Chennai. The two day lecture workshop was inaugurated on 21 st October 2016 at 10.00 am in the Eastaff Hall, Scott Christian College, Nagercoil. Dr. M. Rashi, Vice Principal & the Head of the Chemistry Department welcomed the gathering. Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadas, the Principal of this college presided over the function and gave the Presidential address. The Lecture Workshop was inaugurated by Prof. S. Chandrasekaran, SERB Distinguished fellow, IISc, Bengaluru. Dr. S. Natarajan of IISc Bengaluru felicitated the gathering. The convener of the Lecture Workshop, Dr. R. Ramaraj highlighted the themes of the lecture workshop. He briefed about the various activities of the science Academies. Welcome Address by Dr. M.Rashi, Vice Principal & Head, Department of Chemistry and Presidential Address by Dr. M. Edwin Gnanadhas, Principal, Scott Christian College (Autonomous), Nagercoil.

Prof. S. Chandrasekaran of IISc, Bengaluru, delivered the inaugural lecture on Catalysis for Sustainable Organic Synthesis. He explained about the various ways to reduce the waste in chemical reactions and how to make the environment clean and green. He discussed the importance of catalysis and also briefed about the production of biodiesel. The second session was started by Dr. S. Natarajan. He gave his lecture on d-d transitions and Colour He explained about the various types of colours that originate from natural sources. He also discussed about the coordination environment, absorption and emission spectra of various metal complexes. Prof. Anbarasan of IITM, Chennai, enlightened the gathering by his talk on the Role of Rhodium in Organic Synthesis. With this the first day session was over. The third and fourth session of the Lecture workshop on the second day, 22 nd October 2016, was started by Prof. Suresh Das. He is the Executive Vice President of Kerala State Council for Science. He focused on the topic Photoresponsive Materials.

Karunakaran, the senior Scientist of IIST, Thiruvananthapuram, gave the eigth lecture on Application of Femtosecond Spectroscopy; Biology to Materials. explained the basic concepts on Photochemistry and Emission Spectroscopy. The last two sessions were handled by Prof. R. Ramaraj. His first lecture topic was Nanomaterials and their Application, catalysis and sensors. He He focused on the progress of nanotechnology in recent days and also discussed about solar energy conversion. The participants took the lecture notes enthusiastically. The valedictory address was given by Prof. C. Chitra Thomas, The former Head of the Chemistry Department about the video lectures in Quantum mechanics and group theory which he demonstrates on YouTube. In the feedback session, the young and energetic participants from various institutions expressed their views about the Lecture workshop. They appreciated the coordinator for the well organized Lecture workshop, the hospitality and also suggested the Department of Chemistry to conduct many more workshops and seminars in the years to come. The faculties from other institutions insisted the Convener to sponsor the Science Education Panel to conduct many more workshops in the southern districts of Tamilnadu. Dr. M. Suresh Chandra Kumar, Associate Professor, proposed the vote of thanks. appreciated the financial support rendered by the Science Academies for conducting such a grand workshop. Various publications of the Indian Science academies were displayed. He

The two day workshop came to an end with the national anthem.
