About VJTI Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute (VJTI) was established in 1887. It initially started with two departments, namely the Sir J. J. School of Mechanical Engineering and the Rippon Textile School. In 1913, the Institute was recognized by the then Government of Bombay as the Central Technological Institute, Bombay Province. In addition to other departments, a department of Sanitary Engineering and Plumbing was added in 1923. The department started conduct of the Licentiate in Civil & Sanitary Engineering programme. The institute was granted administrative, academic, financial and managerial autonomy from June 21, 2004. The Institute is reputed for excellent teaching and training in Engineering and Technology at Diploma, Degree, Post Graduate levels and for Research. Presently VJTI offers Diploma in 6 disciplines of engineering, B. Tech programmes in 9 disciplines of engineering, 17 M. Tech. programmes, M.C.A. and Ph.D. programmes in various engineering disciplines. Since the time of inception, VJTI has been playing a vital role in producing quality engineers, introducing new programmes, and electives in emerging areas. In 1998, the Institute was renamed from Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute to the present name Veermata Jijabai Technological Institute. The Institute is affiliated to University of Mumbai for degree granting purpose. It was one of the fourteen institutes selected by the Central Government for further development with grant-in-aid from the Centre under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP - I & II). VJTI is selected for establishment of Centre of Excellence (CoE) in "Complex & Nonlinear Dynamical Systems (CNDS)" under TEQIP-II with a funding of Rs 5 Crores by World Bank through National Project Implementation Unit (NPIU), MHRD, New Delhi. Patron Dr. O. G. Kakde Director, VJTI, Mumbai. GIAN Coordinator Dr. M. M. Chandane Associate Professor, Department of Computer Engineering & IT VJTI, Mumbai. Course Coordinator Dr. V. M. Phalle Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering VJTI, Mumbai.
Overview Robotics is emerging as a tool for training of human skills and functional movements. Robotics also provides the tools to probe the human neuromuscular system and to study how the human body would respond to simulated external conditions using robots. A group at Columbia University Robotics and Rehabilitation (ROAR) Laboratory has designed exoskeletons madeboth of rigid links and light-weight cables. Some of the prominent exoskeletal designs from Columbia ROAR lab are Active Leg Exoskeletons (ALEX), Cable-driven robotic Exoskeletons (CAREX), Cable-driven Active Leg Exoskeletons (C-ALEX), Tethered Pelvic Assist Device (TPAD). The course will describe both the scientific challenges in the design of these rehabilitation machines and human experiments conducted with these designs. The experiments were targeted at movement retraining of young healthy adults, fall prevention of the elderly, gait retraining of stroke and cerebral palsy patients with hemiparesis. Internationally acclaimed academics, researchers and practitioners with proven knowledge, experience, and demonstrable ability in teaching, consultancy, research, and training in the field of Engineering robotics will deliver lectures and discuss cases in the course. The course will be planned and offered as per the norms set by VJTI Mumbai. Objectives: The primary objectives of the course are as follows: 1. To expose participants to the fundamentals of Robotics for Movement Training. 2. To build confidence and capability amongst the participants in the application of Robotics for Movement Training poststroke. 3. To provide exposure to practical problems and their solutions using case studies of on-going projects in Robotic Gait Training. 4. To enhance the capability of the participants to identify and develop technologies in the area of pediatric and adult training systems. 5. To provide opportunity for the technical persons from Indian Industry to improve understandings and update their knowledge in Robotics for Movement Training area. 6. To create avenue for possible collaborative research with the international faculty in the field of Robotics for Movement Training.
