Common frustrations for parents I didn t even do GCSEs how can I help? There is always an excuse I don t know what to believe They always leaves everything to the last minute and then gets stressed I can t stand the arguments and door slamming
Your role as a parent The unofficial attendance officer Provide the tools Project manager Sounding board Entertainment officer
How can you make a difference? Your involvement can make an enormous difference the difference between 4s and 5s and 7s and 8s Parental support is vital to a child s academic success. When the school and parents are working together it will lead to stronger results. The good news is that you don t have to be an expert
Practical Tips o Ensure they have a positive working environment (No clutter, technology away, dedicated space for working) o Work-life balance (Not healthy to have too much of either) o Feed their brains! (Breakfast everyday, no energy drinks) o Encourage honest and open discussions about school.
Attendance in KS4 90% attendance = ½ day missed every week!! Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri? Absent half a day every week
Let s looks a little closer.. 1 school year at 90% attendance = 4 whole weeks of lessons MISSED! 38 school weeks Sept July? Absent for 4 weeks
90% attendance over 5 years of secondary school. = ½ a school year missed Sept July Y7 Y8 Y9 Y10 ½ a year absent from school Y11
What impact might this have on your child s attainment? Research suggests that 17 missed school days a year = GCSE grade DROP in achievement.
