Course Title: 8 th Grade Mathematics This course covers each of the 8 th grade Ohio New Learning Standards. Instructional time focuses on three critical areas: (1) formulating and reasoning about expressions and equations, including modeling an association in bivariate data with a linear equation, and solving linear equations and systems of linear equations; (2) grasping the concept of a function and using functions to describe quantitative relationships; (3) analyzing two-and three-dimensional space and figures using distance, angle, similarity, and congruence, and understanding and applying the Pythagorean Theorem. Students completing 8 th Grade Mathematics are ready to move on to High School Algebra 1. Course Title: 8 th Grade Algebra I for High School Credit - Honors Prerequisite: 8 th Grade Math, 8 th Grade Honors Math, or 7/8 Accelerated Math with B s each Quarter This is a year-long Algebra I course for students who completed either 8 th Grade Math, 8 th Grade Honors Math or 7/8 Accelerated Math with success and who have demonstrated above-average mathematical ability, aptitude, and learning attitudes. High School honors credit is earned for this course and grades are included in the student s high school grade point average. Prerequisites for success include mastery of the basic skills of fraction operations, ratios, equation and problem solving, percent/decimals, and proportions. The curriculum is designed to address all Algebra I Ohio New Learning Standards. For 7/8 Accelerated Math students, the course addresses all of the remaining 8 th Grade New Learning Standards not addressed in 7/8 Accelerated Math as well. Topics include graphing and solving linear, exponential, and quadratic functions, problem solving, factoring, solving systems of equations and inequalities, and radicals. Students must maintain a B or better in this course in order to move on to Honors Geometry. This class has a fast pace and demands that students complete assignments in a timely fashion. Students will take a Semester 1 and Semester 2 Exam that count towards 20% of the student's Semester grade. Students with a B- or above on a Semester grade receive a 0.5 bonus on their course grade. The study of geometry encourages students to think logically and provides training in presenting ideas in a clear and orderly fashion. The course stresses the structure of geometry as a means of encouraging deductive reasoning, precision in language, and visualization. The content of the course includes: points, lines, planes, and angles; reasoning and proof; parallel and perpendicular lines; congruent triangles; relationships in triangles; proportions and similarity; right triangles and trigonometry; quadrilaterals, transformations, circles, areas of polygons and circles, and surface area and volume of solids. The Honors course includes an additional emphasis on spatial and solid geometry and the rigors of proof. This course is demanding in every concept. Students will take a Semester 1 and Semester 2 Exam that count towards 20% of the student's Semester grade. Students with a B- or above on a Semester grade receive a 0.5 bonus on their course grade.
