A guide to education progression SCHOOL COLLEGE UNIVERSITY

Introduction These days there are many different pathways a young person can follow from into work. Sometimes the sheer variety of different options can seem a bit confusing. The purpose of this guide is to show in a clear way the different pathways that are available in a wide range of employment areas. The route-ways can sometime involve study at College, sometimes at University and sometimes a combination of both. As well as full-time study routes there are pathways that involve work-based apprenticeship study. I do hope that you will find this guide useful. If you have any queries or would like any further information please do contact the College s Student Services Team whose contact details are provided at the end of this booklet. Liz McIntyre Principal & Chief Executive, North East Scotland College foreword Making sure that we harness and develop the talents of all of the young people in Scotland means offering a range of pathways from into the workplace through an apprenticeship, or into a full-time or university course and so into employment, or starting up their own business. The good news is that there is a variety of options now available. The challenge is that can sometimes be confusing. Helping young people and their parents, employers and staff in s and other places of learning to understand the many different pathways available is essential if we are to meet the needs and aspirations of all. The North East of Scotland College has produced maps of these learner pathways. This captures learning opportunities and the regional curriculum offer for different sectors of employment and different subject areas. This is ground-breaking and sectorleading. For the first time, s,, university and apprenticeships can be seen on a single page in a way that allows young people to make informed choices. It encourages full value to be given for previous learning, and promotes equal recognition for work-based vocational learning and the more academic forms of study. I am confident that this booklet of progression maps will form an invaluable guide for young people and those who are returning to study later in life to understand how they can make the best of their potential. Sir Ian Wood
