Students are required to purchase access to MyStatLab (MSL) at www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com, which has an online version of the complete textbook as a menu option. New textbooks purchased from the Sierra College bookstore come complete with book and an MSL access code If you purchase a used textbook you will also need to purchase access to MSL on their website. To register in MSL you will need: Free temporary access to MSL is available for 14 days. See website for instructions. Access Code from your New textbook OR a credit card to purchase online access A valid (and frequently checked) email address The Course ID provided in this syllabus (see above) A graphing calculator (such as the TI-83/84) is highly recommended but not required since programs like StatCrunch, Statdisk and Excel can perform many of the same functions that a graphing calculator will for completing problems in this course. The software/technology that you use in this course is up to you and your responsibility to learn. At the end of each section in the textbook there is a Technology Box that gives thorough instructions on how to complete problems from that section using the various types of technology available. Youtube is also a great resource. As is the tools for success button in MSL. Other technology requirements for this course are basic: a functioning computer with a pdf reader and regular broadband Internet access. If your internet/computer access is limited or fails, you can visit any three of the Sierra College campuses and use a computer in a lab. Another useful website will be Sierra College s own distance learning site at http://www.sierracollege.edu/distancelearning/index.php. You can find information on tutoring, testing services and much more that pertains to your success in an online course. Course Description Introduction to the basic concepts of statistics. Emphasis on statistical reasoning and application of statistical methods. Areas included: graphical and numerical methods of descriptive statistics; basic elements of probability and sampling; binomial, normal, Student's t, and chi-square distributions; confidence intervals and hypothesis testing for one and two population means and proportions; chisquare tests for goodness-of-fit and independence; and linear regression and correlation.

Prerequisite Completion of Math D with a grade of "C" or better, or placement by matriculation assessment process. Course Outcomes 1. Recognize, label and identify data by type and level of measurement. 2. Construct and interpret data using graphical and numerical methods of descriptive statistics. 3. Calculate and interpret problems involving basic elements of probability and sampling. 4. Conduct hypothesis tests and construct confidence interval estimates for population means and proportions; chi-square tests for goodness-of-fit and independence; linear regression and correlation; and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA). 5. Logically present clear, complete, and sufficiently detailed solutions to demonstrate understanding and communicate reasoning of statistical methods using technology when appropriate. Lectures In Canvas I have created Modules that guide you through each chapter and section of the book. Modules will become open for viewing a unit at a time (thus, you can work ahead up to the next exam). Follow the instructions in each module. The videos in each module were created by the Publisher (Pearson and mimic the text best), James Sullivan (a statistics teacher on the Rocklin campus) and the Khan Academy (A free resource online that makes short math videos). These modules remind you to read the text, do your homework in MSL and take the chapter quiz in MSL but are not directly linked to the assignments found in MSL. You will need to visit MSL to complete homework, quizzes and tests. Homework All homework is posted in MSL (not Canvas, only a reminder is posted in each module of Canvas). There are two types of Homework: ONLINE HOMEWORK: Each section will have online homework that is to be completed in MyStatLab through the www.pearsonmylabandmastering.com website. Homework will be due on Fridays at 11:59pm each week, please see the course calendar for specific dates of assignments. Note that homework and quizzes for each unit are open from the start of the unit (thus, you can work ahead up to the next exam); items will close and become unavailable at the time that it is due according to our calendar. It is recommended that you do each assignment in conjunction with your completion of the corresponding readings and videos as to prevent falling behind in your assignments. Late homework will not be accepted nor will any extensions be granted for any reason including Internet or computer failure. Computer access is available on all three campuses and assignments are open long enough to allow completion in spite of a temporary technology failure. PAPER - HOMEWORK: Most chapters will have supplemental homework that you will complete usually on paper and send to me via canvas submission for grading. These assignments are posted in MSL under the homework tab as a drop-down. They will be labeled Chapter X Paper Homework. Each assignment is different in nature and depends of the topic covered in that chapter. For example, for chapter two you will be asked to complete the class survey so that we have data to use for future assignments. These assignments will also be due on Fridays and should be uploaded as a PDF via the submission button in Canvas (I will provide more info on this throughout the semester in MSL). Late homework will not be accepted nor will any extensions be granted for any reason.

Quizzes Quizzes will be given at the end of each chapter in MSL. You will have 1 hour to complete each quiz in one sitting; it is important that you have completed the homework and are ready to take the quiz before you begin it. You will have two attempts at each quiz. Availability of quizzes will end at 11:59p.m. on Fridays (see course calendar for specific due dates). If you do not complete a quiz prior to its deadline you will receive a zero for that quiz. Extensions will not be granted for any reason. Exams There will be three exams in this course. The exams will assess your understanding of the material covered in class through the readings, videos and homework. The exams will be completed in MSL and resemble the format of your homework and quizzes. You will have one attempt at each exam and 125 minutes to complete each exam in one sitting. Exam 1 will be due Saturday 3/5 at or before 11:59 p.m. Exam 2 will be due Saturday 4/23 at or before 11:59 p.m. Final Exam will be due Thursday 5/19 at or before 11:59 p.m. Student Lounge There will be a discussion board in Canvas titled student lounge this is a place for you to connect with other students in the class. For example, if you have a question about a homework or lecture problem you can post it to the discussion board and see if one of your peers can offer insight. Or if you desire to create a study group you might want to start by contacting fellow students on this board. This board will be one way how I will gage class participation. I will not participate in this discussion board but I will be monitoring it for cheating on exams. If an exam question or solution is posted on this board the person who posted it will earn a zero for that exam and a new exam question will replace the implicated question. The entire class will have to answer this new exam question in place of the one involved in the discussion board. Additional time to work on the new question will not be granted. Technical Issues If the MSL website should become unavailable for a period of time, any affected assignments will be extended for the same length of time that the website was down. Any technical issues with your personal computer or Internet will not be considered a valid reason for an assignment extension. Computer access is available on all three of the Sierra College campuses. Grades Listed below is the grading policy and grade break down. Your grades will be updated and posted regularly in MSL under the gradebook button, grades will not be updated in Canvas. Your homework, quizzes and exams are graded automatically in MSL upon your completion of the assignment. I will be adding your paper homework grades to the MSL gradebook. Regularly viewing your gradebook in MSL will give you a fairly accurate idea of where you stand in the course. The study plan does not contribute to your grade. (See Sierra College Board Policy 5500) Dropping and Withdrawing If a student decides not to take the course it is the student s responsibility to drop or withdraw from classes according to published deadlines. I will drop any student who does not complete the pre-course contributions (syllabus quiz 0, discussion 0 and register in MSL) by Friday 1/29/16 at 11:59 pm. The instructor reserves the right to drop any student who fails to participate for more than 1 week in the course with out a verifiable medical, military or school related excuse. Students may drop/withdraw on MySierra or in person at Admissions and Records. Miscellaneous Be sure you are always aware of due dates so you do not fall behind. You should plan on spending at least 15 20 hours each week learning the material and submitting assignments. Make sure you have a solid understanding of the material before you take a quiz or exam.
