our PROSPECTUS THE BRITISH INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Pudong, Shanghai

Welcome to The British International School Shanghai, Pudong. It is our aim to meet your child s academic potential whilst at the same time encouraging their social development as they grow into adulthood to become citizens of the world. Whatever the age or ability of your child, we are confident that we can meet their needs and challenge them in their growth and development, both intellectually and emotionally. Our teaching and support staff make sure that we can be proud of the academic achievements of our students and of the progress that they make at all stages of their education. We are equally proud of the extensive range of opportunities beyond the confines of the classroom that encourages our children to explore new opportunities to extend their skills and interests. The British International School at Pudong prides itself on the different ways we encourage learners to flourish. We do all that we can to motivate them in their learning so that they can take up their place as well-educated and adaptable members of our global society. This is made possible by the effective and close partnership amongst our staff, the students and the parents at Pudong. It is through this collective effort that we have developed a British International School where learning is at the heart of everything that we do. We welcome visitors to see for themselves the achievements and the confidence of our youngsters. If you would like to see the school in action, please do not hesitate to contact us via email, phone or letter to arrange a suitably convenient time. I look forward to meeting you and showing you our school. Patrick Horne, Principal

Learning from 18 months to 18 years We follow the English National Curriculum, used by over 30,000 schools in the UK and overseas. This brings reassurance to parents and stability to students. This is important when moving between countries. We all benefit from its rigorous training for teachers, its reliable assessment system and its rich supply of books and other resources. Children start at our school in the Early Years Foundation Stage (from age 18 months), progressing through Key Stages 1 and 2, following a well-planned and tested programme of study in a range of subjects. Throughout the school, students of all ages will have a chance to learn Mandarin Chinese as part of their studies. We encourage all our students to learn through experience. In the younger age groups, children rotate between teacher-led activities and those they choose themselves, using both outdoor and indoor spaces to best advantage. Linked themes provide structure and make learning fun. This thematic approach continues into Key Stage 1 when children become more aware of subjects, recognizing the common strands that define areas of study. We have a strong focus on literacy and numeracy skills, supported by the highly successful UK framework. In Key Stage 2, teaching and learning become increasingly based on skills, with investigative work a key part of each day s activities. Our students enjoy learning. We use the latest guidance from the UK to ensure that they progress and achieve. We build confidence in all our students, preparing them to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives. Our students will make a strong and positive contribution to society and our OUR CURRICULUM 4 5 curriculum gives them the skills and knowledge they will need. Specialist teaching programmes in Key Stages 3 and 4 develop deeper understanding across the arts, humanities, languages and sciences. Students sit external examinations, earning IGCSE qualifications that are recognised worldwide. Post 16, our students study for the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma, valued by universities and colleges around the world as ideal preparation for higher education. The international focus of the IB programme makes it ideal for our students, whose experiences and skills mark them out as today s global citizens and tomorrow s global leaders.

international baccalaureate Recognised as the leader in international education, the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme fosters the knowledge, skills and attitudes that enable students to excel at university. The IB diploma Programme s challenging curriculum educates the whole student, developing the capacity for enquiry, research and problemsolving as well as essential skills for communication and collaboration. Studies of IB diploma Programme graduates at university confirm that IB students transition into university life is easier due to the foundations instilled through the IB environment and in the end, gain higher degree classifications. The International Baccalaureate organisation conducted a 5 year review of the school in 2011 and highly commended our diploma programme. The Panel highly commends Pudong Campus on its continued commitment to the principles of international education and, in particular, to the mission and aims of the IB and Diploma Programme. It is clear from the evidence presented that Pudong Campus is a quality IB school that has explicitly embedded many of the core beliefs and values of the IB, such as internationalism and the learner profile, into all aspects of the school. 6 7

English as an Additional Language (EAL) Our students represent 57 nationalities 75% are learning in a second language English language learning is an integral part of the school from the nursery stage, right up to and including, the IB years. Our team of professional EAL tutors and teaching assistants support the children to acquire and consolidate their language learning. Students who require further assistance, and more time, to develop a high level of English fluency and competence across all areas of study will replace certain lessons on their timetable for dedicated EAL lessons. Active participation in class and involvement in discussions and activities are essential components of EAL learning through which students may deepen their understanding of, and confidence in using, the English language. EAL study is largely skills-based with equal focus and weighting given to reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students will be continually assessed on all of the skills mentioned above in class. In Year 10 and 11 we encourage students to take IGCSE English as an Additional Language which demonstrates their ability to access further study or to work with English as the main medium of communication. Many universities in the UK, and other English-speaking countries, will recognise this Certificate as evidence of the applicants ability to work in English. 8 9

Olympic diver Tom Daley gives our students a diving lesson beyond the classroom Education is about much more than lessons and qualifications, important though they are. We offer our students experiences designed to be fun, challenging, inspiring and motivating. From first steps on the stage in the chorus of the Early Years Christmas Production to the lead role in a whole school musical: these are the journeys that students make as they develop and grow with us. We see passion and pride in our students as they represent the school in sports tournaments in Hong Kong or Beijing. We applaud their triumphs as members of dance groups, orchestras, bands and choirs, or as they experience the thrill of solo performances. Our after-school, extra curricular activities programme we call S-P-A-C-E to stand for Sports, Performance, Academia, Community and Expression; the programme is very extensive and offers children a wide range of interests to explore beyond the classroom. We offer the challenging International Award, combining service to others with expedition and adventure. Shared experiences lead to lifelong friendships and memories that will endure long after tired bodies have rested. To extend their curriculum, younger students go on local visits with Years 5 and 6 enjoying a residential trip. Older students undertake a week-long residential trip further afield in China. Living and working with others brings out the best in everyone and, through service projects in Shanghai and further afield, our students see how life looks through other people s eyes. This provides educational experiences that cannot come from books and lectures. Through our Global Classroom students interact with the Nord Anglia Education family of schools, more than 9,000 students discuss common topics making for hot debate. Model United Nations gives students more in depth theory and knowledge behind world politics and annual attendance at the Global Young Leaders conference and TedX offer a worldwide stage. We positively promote student leadership and an active student voice and students are nominated to join the student council, with annual elections held for pride of place as Head Girl and Head Boy. Students learn about democracy and representation in the School Councils and we find opportunities for leadership for students of all ages. 10 11
