Our History An image. A design. The simple act of creative expression. Unlike words, art has the capacity to transcend seemingly insurmountable barriers between individuals, communities and nations. Art serves as the conduit through which humanity finds and honors its best self. Altharetta Yeargin believed this. Her personal and professional passion for art left a legacy that continues to inspire and transform. As one of the most diverse collections of world art and cultural artifacts in our region, the collection she built during her lifetime as an educator, is at the heart of a premier cultural destination located in West Houston s energy corridor. Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum (AYAM) provides a wealth of programming for area families and residents. Weekend art workshops, seminars, artist talks, after-hours events and professional learning opportunities are some of the offerings that make AYAM an outstanding destination for all ages.
At the core of AYAM s mission is community. Our Mission AYAM believes that its community members value the importance of building cultural understanding and an appreciation of the creative arts. All families and residents deserve access to cultural programming and art space that provides fun, educational learning opportunities in an inviting community art space. AYAM believes regional, national and international artists benefit from access to a facility situated in the heart of West Houston that will expand their reach and deepen community connections. Offering artists an outstanding space in which to showcase their work and connect to a wider audience outside of the centralized museum district, AYAM welcomes proposals from both emerging and established artists. The museum also serves more than 5,000 area students a year, hosting field trips and a traveling art program. AYAM believes all students need access to world-class learning resources.
Inside Our Facility: A Rich Collection The museum, which opened in 2003, boasts a 6,048 square feet, Smithsonian-designed facility housing three galleries, an enriched learning area, a kiva theater and art reference library. The museum is home to more than 600 artifacts and fine art pieces representing cultures from antiquity to the present.
Outside Our Facility: A Beautiful Transformation Completed in 2014 by artist Daniel Anguilu, a new brilliantly colored mural transcribes the museum vision onto the exterior building façade, inviting visitors and passersby to investigate and explore the hidden world awaiting them inside. From innovative idea to creative partnership, this work embodies the modern AYAM spirit, one that looks forward as it honors, shares and preserves that which the museum serves to steward, great art.
Making History From home grown gem to regional and national asset, AYAM has literally begun a transformation in recent years. The rich, diverse tapestry that is at the heart of the Altharetta Yeargin Art Museum s mission can now be experienced the moment visitors arrive onsite. Benefiting the Community Your support will ensure our beliefs and dreams are turned into actions that benefit our entire community.
