Research and Teaching Opportunities in Turkey for USF Faculty Kiki Caruson, PhD Research Administration Faculty Fellow Prepared: June, 2011

Opportunities for Faculty Research and Teaching in Turkey For faculty interested in engaging with Turkish universities, this document provides a brief overview of the universities USF faculty and administrators visited during 2010 and 2011 as part of dialogue tours sponsored by the Turkish Cultural Center of Tampa Bay. USF has formal agreements with two prestigious universities located in Ankara, Turkey s capital: Hacettepe University and the Middle East Technical University. In addition, USF has a formal agreement with a newly established private university, Meliksah University, located in the city of Kayseri in central Turkey. Ten universities, (public and private) are profiled in this document all offer excellent opportunities for research and/or teaching collaboration in a variety of disciplines. This list is intended to be illustrative and is not exhaustive. Collaborating with Turkish partners Faculty are welcome to establish working relationships for research and teaching collaboration without a formal agreement. Formal agreements are NOT a necessary requirement for partnerships. Should a partner in Turkey request a formal agreement, please visit: http://global.usf.edu/intl_agreements.php for more information. Listed below is contact information for individuals who can assist you with the collaboration process. USF World/Academic Affairs: Contact Dr. Maria Crummett, Associate Vice President for Global Affairs at mcrummet@usf.edu College of Medicine: Contact Dr. John Sinnott, Associate Dean of International Affairs at jsinnott@health.usf.edu College of Public Health: Contact Dr. Ann DeBaldo, Associate Dean, International Programs at adebaldo@health.usf.edu College of Nursing: Contact Dr. Sandra Cadena, Director, Global Health Programs at scadena@health.usf.edu The Fulbright Scholar Program has launched a Turkey Initiative which includes a unique award for U.S. scholars and Turkish scholars who collaborate on designing a single joint teaching or teaching/research project. More information about the Fulbright Turkey Initiative is available at: http://www.cies.org/fulbright/turkey A directory of USF Fulbright Scholars is available at: http://global.usf.edu/fulbright_directory.php USF Education Abroad offers a variety of study abroad opportunities for students and faculty including: semester exchanges, summer and short term programs, international internships, and service learning. Programs range in duration from two weeks to one year and award academic credit. More information about how to organize a study abroad program in Turkey is available at: http://global.usf.edu/educationabroad/ 1

USF Faculty Educated in Turkey Information sourced from the USF Graduate School as of 1/3/11. Except where noted with an asterisk, faculty have also earned a graduate degree in the United States. This list is unofficial and may not be comprehensive. Kara Levent, Assistant Professor, School of Architecture Orhan Arslan,* Associate Professor, Pathology and Cell Biology, Medicine Rasim Guldiken, Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering Gokhan Mumcu, Assistant Professor, Electrical Engineering Aydin K. Sunol, Professor, Chemical and Biomedical Engineering Turkish Students Studying at USF (degree, non-degree, and exchange) Since 2005, USF has hosted more than 280 graduate and undergraduate students from Turkey. The vast majority of these students pursue graduate degrees in the fields of engineering (civil, electrical, industrial, and mechanical), business administration, psychology, and secondary language acquisition and instructional technology. On average, USF hosts 40 Turkish students (graduate and undergraduate combined) annually. USF Students Studying in Turkey The pool of students from USF who have studied (or are planning to study) in Turkey is quite small. On average, one USF student spends a 7 week summer session at Bosphorus/Bogazici University in Istanbul and over the past several years only one student has participated in a traditional semester exchange program (with Bosphorus). In the past, USF Education Abroad has offered study abroad experiences in Turkey; particularly during the spring break period. Opportunities for study abroad in Turkey can be found at: http://global.usf.edu/educationabroad/ Student Organizations at USF Turkish Student Organization, Advisor, Professor Aydin Sunol, College of Engineering http://www.ctr.usf.edu/turkishsa/ 3

Turkish University Profiles Presented here is brief background information about a select group of universities that offer programs in a wide variety of disciplines and coursework primarily in English. The ten universities profiled in this document represent the institutions visited by USF faculty and administrators during two separate dialogue tours hosted in 2010 and 2011. This list is not intended to be comprehensive, but merely illustrative of the types of opportunities available in Turkey. For more detailed information about an institution, visit the websites of the various universities for information specific to your discipline. In general, there is a great deal of interest in collaborating with U.S. faculty among Turkish scholars. For the interested faculty member, there are many opportunities for international engagement. If you would like further contact information for a specific discipline, please contact: Dr. Kiki Caruson, Research Administration Faculty Fellow, Office of Research and Innovation and USF World, at kcaruson@usf.edu Prior to the 1980s there were no private universities in Turkey. Since 1985 private institutions have flourished and the government has funded new public universities. Among our peer institutions in Turkey, many faculty members received their graduate degrees from American or Canadian universities. A significant number of universities, especially elite universities and private institutions, offer courses exclusively in English. The elite public universities including Bogazici (Bosphorus) in Istanbul, Hacettepe and the Middle East Technical University (METU) in Ankara, have high caliber faculty and students, and excellent core facilities and research resources. The older generation of private universities including Bahcesehir and Fatih in Istanbul, and Bilkent in Ankara are also well established and have much to offer in terms of opportunities for research collaboration and faculty/student exchanges. These universities have excellent faculty and student bodies that are similar in caliber to USF s population. A new generation of private universities including Meliksah in Kayseri, Mevlana in Konya, and Gediz in Izmir offer beautiful facilities, faculty trained in the United States or recruited from elite institutions within Turkey, and an abundance of resources, but their programs and research labs are in the early stages of operation. There are interesting opportunities within these universities as well, including possibilities for teaching, training, and research collaboration. 4

Experiencing Turkey For the past several years, the Turkish Cultural Center of Tampa Bay has hosted dialogue tours of Turkey for USF faculty, administrators, and community leaders. The trips are generally ten days in length and include travel to several cities across Turkey; opportunities to visit public and private universities; and opportunities for research collaboration and exchanges among faculty and students. The tour also includes visits to many of Turkey s most important historical sites. The trip itinerary for 2010 included Istanbul, the nation s capital city Ankara, and several cities in central Turkey. The 2011 trip included Instanbul, Izmir, located along the Agean coast, and several cities in central Turkey including Konya and Kayseri. More information about the Turkish Cultural Center of Tampa Bay can be found at: http://www.tampaturkish.org/ Geographically, Turkey serves as an important bridge between Europe and Central Asia. To the west, Turkey borders Greece and Bulgaria. To the east the country can count Georgia, Armenia, Iran, Iraq, and Syria as its neighbors. Surrounded by seas on three sides (the Black Sea to the north, the Mediterranean to the south and the Agean to the west), historically, Turkey functioned as the center of commerce including well known silk and spice trading routes. Today it is a popular tourist destination. Modern Turkey was founded by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1923 which marked the end of the reign of the Ottoman Empire. Turkey has evolved into a modern, democratic state, is a member of NATO, and a candidate for membership in the European Union. Turkey has three large urban centers: Ankara its capital located in central Turkey, Istanbul its cultural center stretched between Europe and Asia, and Izmir located along the Agean coast with beautiful beaches and seaside resorts. Central Turkey is home to a thriving small business community and is well known for its many entrepreneurs. Turkey s population of 74 million is mostly Sunni Muslim, however, the government remains committed to a secular society. People of all faiths and ethnicities can be found in Turkey s urban regions. Turkey is a country of diverse cultures, beliefs, ideas, geography and history. The Turkish landscape combines the characteristics of three continents: Europe, Africa and Asia. Between 2000 B.C. and A.D.1500, Anatolia (central Turkey) was the center of the world s civilization. Turkey is known for its handicrafts, cuisine, music, and Hittite, Seljuk, Roman, Byzantine, and Ottoman influences. 5
