Some information was extracted and adapted from the Pearson Assessments Website and the NNAT2 Directions for Administration Handbook, 2007, NCS Pearson, Inc. If you need additional assistance with the NNAT2 online test or with the Pearson System, contact the Pearson Support Team at 1-800-514-8494 on Monday-Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Central Time. 2 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services

Background Information The Texas State Plan for the Education of Gifted/Talented Students requires that students are assessed in languages they understand or with nonverbal assessments. Nonverbal assessments can be used with students who speak any language and do not require that students speak the English language. The NNAT2 is a required assessment for English Language Learners who are participating in the GT screening process in the Austin Independent School District. The NNAT2 is a widely used nonverbal assessment of reasoning that uses progressive matrices to allow for a culturally neutral evaluation of students nonverbal reasoning and general problem-solving ability, regardless of the individual student s primary language, education, culture, or socioeconomic background. Studies have shown that the use of nonverbal tests in the GT selection process can increase the number of students from underrepresented populations identified for the program. According to Pearson, The NNAT2 is appropriate for students from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds, including students [with] limited proficiency in English and those gifted and talented students who do not speak English or are learning English. The NNAT2 is designed for fair assessment of socially or economically disadvantaged students Finally, the NNAT2 is appropriate for students with hearing, language, motor, or color-vision impairments. (2007, NCS Pearson, Inc.) Remember that parent permission must be granted by obtaining a completed and signed Austin ISD Parent GT Nomination Survey prior to beginning any testing. The English Nomination Survey is available at http://www.austinisd.org/academics/advancedacademics/gifted/parentcorner and the Spanish Nomination Survey is available at http://www.austinisd.org/academics/advancedacademics/gifted/parapadres. 3 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services

Before Testing Begins The NNAT2 is an online assessment. The campus will need to provide a desktop computer or laptop (no ipads) for each student. A separate computer must also be available for the GT Assessor to use during testing sessions. The computers may be hard-wired to the internet or be connected to the AISD WIFI system. All computers should be networked through the AISD Education internet server. The GT Assessor will be responsible for ensuring that a System Check is run on each computer prior to the testing session by following the steps below. These steps only need to be completed once for each computer and do not need to be repeated prior to each subsequent testing session. The GT Assessor will also need to have a separate computer to use during the testing sessions and that computer also needs to be configured for testing. Open the following website on each computer www.pearson.programworkshop.com Click on the System Check link and follow the directions within the Pearson Assessment website. At the end of the system check, computers with a red dot are not compatible with the NNAT2 assessment system. The Austin ISD Technology Help Desk may need to be reached for technology assistance. If the system check ends with a green dot, the computer is compatible with the NNAT2 system. If the system check is successful, the next step is to Download the Pearson Browser. Follow the simple steps in the download section to place the Pearson Browser onto the desktop of each computer. Students will not be able to take the NNAT2 test without both the System Check and the Pearson Browser already completed. This Pearson Browser needs to appear on each computer desktop. Do not remove the browser after the testing session ends. You will need it for future NNAT2 testing sessions. 4 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services

Ordering NNAT2 Tests Indicate on GT Material Order Form the number of tests needed. Advanced Academic Services will allocate the appropriate number of tests to your campus through the Pearson System. Please do not request NNAT2 tests within the Pearson System. If a campus has already ordered NNAT2 tests through a GT Material Order Form and they need to request additional tests, this may be done online through the Pearson System. If a campus chooses to request additional tests through the Pearson System, Delaine Canales must be notified at delaine.canales@austinisd.org or 512-414-0139. This will ensure the additional tests have been approved through the system. Advanced Academic Services will enter the GT Advocate and Assessor as test proctors. A Welcome email will be sent to GT Advocate and Assessor with user name and password from Pearson Educational Assessments Online. GT Advocates and Assessors should change their password to ensure test security within the system. Conduct the System Check and Download the Pearson Browser on each computer if not already done prior to receiving the Welcome email from Pearson. These two steps must be completed before starting a testing session. Entering Students for Testing GT Assessor will gather the following information for each student completing the NNAT2 test before starting a testing session: Student Name Grade Level AISD ID# Birthdate Gender Race/Ethnicity Number of Years in Bilingual Program 5 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services

There are two options for entering students into the NNAT2 system; adding a student one at a time or importing all students at once. Administering the Test On testing day, before setting up students in front of computer, create a session number. The session number is only active for 24 hours. GT Assessor must have one computer for their use during the testing session. CREATING A SESSION NUMBER Click on TEST DELIVER on left part of screen Create a SESSION NAME and enter on top right corner (using the grade level, school name, or other session name is acceptable) Select NNAT2 under SELECT TEST ADMINISTRATION Click CREATE SESSION Be sure to write down the session number as this number will need to be entered for each individual student who will be taking the test on that date. BEGINNING THE TEST SESSION Open the Pearson website (www.pearson.programworkshop.com ) on your own computer in the testing room and enter your username and password so that you can serve as the test proctor. Open the Pearson Browser on each student computer and enter the session number assigned. Pick up the students who will be tested and assign a computer to each student. (Students can test in small groups of the same grade level or mixed grades.) Enter the required student information for each computer that is prompted by the Pearson Browser (diagram at right). GT Assessor will return to their computer in the testing room and serve as the test proctor during the testing session. Be sure to tell all students that they need to wait for a few minutes before they may begin their test. The test proctor will need to approve each student for NNAT2 testing on their computer screen before individual students may begin the test. Once all students are approved, the test proctor will read the directions aloud to students before they begin. The directions are available in both English and Spanish. 7 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services

After Testing Typically within an hour of completing the assessment, the GT Assessor can print an NNAT2 Student Score Report in either English or Spanish. These student reports should be printed and placed in each student s GT assessment folder. This NNAT2 data will be used by the GT Decision-Making Committee when making placement decisions for students. Schools should send home a copy of the NNAT2 Student Report when notifying the parent of final GT placement or nonplacement. LOCATING REPORTS Click REPORTS on left side of screen Select REPORT TYPE (The school will use the Student Report for GT Assessment. The Home Report is for parents and available in English and Spanish). Select appropriate information for selected report Click RUN REPORT Select the appropriate report(s) Click GENERATE PDF Click OPEN to view report Click SAVE to save report INTERPRETING NNAT2 REPORTS The target score for the NNAT2 test is an 8 th age stanine, the same target for English speaking students taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Stanine scores range from 1 to 9, with a score of 5 representing the average performance amongst students of the same age. Students scoring at the 8 th or 9 th age stanine in the NNAT2 should be considered for placement in the GT program, provided additional data supports placement. The major advantage of stanines is broad groupings discourage over-interpretation of small, insignificant differences among scores. The student s NNAT2 stanine score is located in the additional scores section on the Student Score Report. 10 Austin ISD Advanced Academic Services
