Standards Referenced Reporting (SRR) Five levels l of performance: 5 (highest) to 1 (threshold) + unclassified 5** (best performance) and 5* (next best group) Standards at levels 5 and 4 are set with reference to grades A-DofcurrentHKALE Component levels for Combined Science electives will be reported in the certificate Standards setting A candidate s total subject score is based on both public examination and SBA results A panel of judges (experienced teachers, markers, examiners, etc) will determine the minimum scores (cut scores) a candidate must obtain in order to meet various standards (Levels 1-5)
Features of SRR The standards d are held constant t The percentage of candidates awarded a given level may vary from year to year The standards of performance are more explicit Level descriptors together with samples of performance can illustrate the standards 2012 SBA Teachers Handbook delivered to schools in October 2009 http://www.hkeaa.edu.hk/docl ibrary/sba/hkdse/sbahandbo ok-2012-bio-e-300609.pdf (E) http://www.hkeaa.edu.hk/docl ibrary/sba/hkdse/sbahandbo ok-2012-bio-c-300609.pdf (C)
HKDSE Bio School-Based Assessment Principles of SBA design: integrate assessment with teaching and learning align with curriculum aims (e.g. develop the ability to make scientific inquiries) by addressing curriculum emphases and learning targets (e.g. make careful observations, formulate hypothesis for investigation) feedback kfor better learning and dteaching HKDSE Bio School-Based Assessment Implemented din 2 phases: 2012 & 2013 Exams Practical related tasks only 2014 Exam & onwards B th ti l l t dt k & Both practical related tasks & nonpractical related tasks

Relation of the Curriculum to SBA * Topics included in Combined Science (Biology part)
Assessment Criteria: i Area B Assessment based on the report of a scientific investigation carried out by students Design & planning of the investigation has to be completed within class time under the supervision of the teacher Teachers can provide their students with: Generic guidelines on the design of the investigation & on writing the report Technical information essential for the investigation Assessment criteria Section 2.4 Teachers Handbook To be illustrated t in marked sample student t reports On making assessment Mark scale 10 point scale applicable to different ability areas and tasks in the SBA Marks Quality of work 9-10 Excellent 6-8 Good 3-5 Fair 1-2 Poor Assessment must be fair and students work must be original.
Moderation of SBA mark a statistical moderation method will be adopted The school would be used as the unit for moderation the average and the spread of fsba scores of students in a given school will be adjusted with reference to the public examination scores of the same group of students students SBA marks may be adjusted but the rank order determined by the school will remained unchanged district coordinators will also inspect samples of the students assessed work to assist moderation and make adjustments if necessary 2014 & onwards Practical related & Non-practical related tasks Practical related tasks Biology Combined Sc (Bio) Practical related tasks Nonpractical related tasks Nonpractical related tasks A B A B S5 1 1 1 S6 1 1 1 1 1 1 6% 8% 6% 3% 4% 3%
