About the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA) SQA is an internationally recognised leader in qualifications and assessment. It is the national qualifications body in Scotland. As an awarding body, it works with schools, colleges, universities, industry, and government, to provide high quality, flexible and relevant qualifications. Its qualifications are inclusive and accessible to all, recognise the achievements of learners, and provide clear pathways to further learning or employment. SQA works with a broad range of national and international partners to ensure that its qualifications and systems of education and training are relevant, reflect best practice, and meet the changing needs of individuals, the labour market, societies and national economies. All its qualifications are protected by a robust quality assurance system. SQA s Organisation The SQA is based in Glasgow, and is a not-for-profit government agency sponsored by the Scottish Government. It employs over 00 people in Scotland. A Chair and Board are appointed by the Scottish Government to oversee and direct SQA. There is also an Advisory Council appointed by the Scottish Government to provide independent advice to Ministers and SQA. It has more than 0 years experience in developing qualifications and qualification systems, and over 0 years experience of working internationally in partnership with governments, colleges, universities, schools and industry. Its global hubs include the UK, Beijing, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur and New Delhi. It offers internationally-recognised qualifications and consultancy services to help governments and people realise their full potential. SQA s Roles The organisation has two main roles: qualifications and accreditation. QUALIFICATIONS: devises and develops qualifications validates qualifications (makes sure they are well written and meet the needs of learners and tutors) reviews qualifications to ensure they are up to date quality-assures education and training establishments which offer SQA qualifications issues certificates to candidates 1, Collyer Quay, The Arcade, #14-04/0, Singapore 041

ACCREDITION: accredits qualifications other than degrees approves and quality assures awarding bodies that plan to enter people for these qualifications It offers a range of services for businesses and training providers, ranging from course and centre approval through customised awards, to endorsement, credit rating and licensing services. Why SQA? SQA s people are trusted experts in qualification and assessment design, and they work at the heart of Scotland s world-renowned education system. SQA provides high-quality, relevant and flexible qualifications and assessments, embedding and instilling industry standards. Its International Consultancy has an established reputation for excellence and efficiency. To achieve SQA s qualifications, people have to develop and demonstrate real skills. There s no better set of qualifications for up-skilling a workforce, or for progressing in a career and education. Its Customised Awards can help organisations to formalise in-house training, increase skills levels and meet regulatory requirements. Unlike other awarding bodies, the SQA is sponsored by government. SQA is obliged by an Act of Parliament to develop and award qualifications that are fit for purpose. Its qualifications must be right for learners, learning providers, government and industry. It s a guarantee of quality. SQA Qualifications INTERNATIONALLY RECOGNISED AND QUALITY ASSURED SQA qualifications are high quality, flexible and relevant to industry. This means they are designed to suit the changing needs of different countries and industry providers. They provide a route to employment, develop the skills of staff and can provide advanced university entry. Many are recognised by professional bodies, and enable Associate Grade and Member Grade of professional bodies, for example the Chartered Management Institute (CMI)., Collyer Quay, The Arcade, #14-04/0, Singapore 041

They can complement local qualifications to expand international recognition. All of SQA s qualifications are recognised on or are aligned to these qualifications frameworks: Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework (SCQF) for Scotland The Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) for the United Kingdom (excluding Scotland) European Qualifications Framework (EQF) for Europe About SQA Higher National Diploma (HND) Qualifications An HND is a Higher Education qualification. HND stands for Higher National Diploma. HNDs are vocational qualifications that use practical approaches to learning including project and assignment work, team and group work, and research into real business practice. Offered by colleges, some universities and many other training centres, HNDs are specially designed to meet the needs of employers both locally and nationally. They are developed by the SQA in partnership with colleges, universities and industry. Because employers and universities recognise Higher National Qualifications as good evidence of ability, having an HND will help people progress into an overseas university or get a job. For anyone who is serious about getting a job and having a career with prospects, getting an HND is one of the best ways to achieve that ambition. Many HNDs allow direct entry to third year study at university. They can also provide the knowledge and understanding required for vocational qualifications such as Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs) and National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). Currently the most popular choice for students after studying an HND is to go to on to a degree in a university. If you complete an SQA HND programme you will be able to apply to a university. The university will also require evidence of English language ability. Depending on the degree you select, you may have to undertake some form of bridging programme., Collyer Quay, The Arcade, #14-04/0, Singapore 041

What else is good about HNDs? HND is equivalent to UK degree levels at years one & two and just need extra year to 'top up' to full degree. HND provide both the practical skills you need to do a job and the theoretical knowledge your employer will expect you to have. HND don't just qualify you for work. HNDs allow direct entry to third year and can also give you the knowledge and understanding required for Scottish Vocational Qualifications (SVQs). Possessing an HND can also give you entry to a number of professional bodies. So whether you want to go straight into a job, or continue your studies, getting a Higher National qualification is a good place to start. Currently the most popular choice for students after studying an HND is to go to on to a degree in a university. If you complete an SQA HND programme you will be able to apply to a university. The university will also require evidence of English language ability. Depending on the degree you select, you may have to undertake some form of bridging programmes. Entry Requirement The normal entry requirement to HND for students: Completed 1 years of basic education Age 1 years old and above English proficiency at IELTS. or its equivalent How do I Deliver SQA Qualifications Wherever you are delivering SQA qualifications, you are at the heart of our business. Working with SQA gives you direct access to a highly-experienced and dedicated team of education professionals., Collyer Quay, The Arcade, #14-04/0, Singapore 041

Work with us Britlink will appoint a personal account manager, who will get to know your business and work with you to tailor the right products and services for your requirements, from recognising learner achievement right through to developing your own customised qualifications. SQA constantly reviews its portfolio, making sure SQA qualifications are relevant, accessible and enable opportunities for lifelong learning. Approval Process Before you can deliver SQA qualifications, your organisation will need to be approved. This is a series of checks that your centre has the management structure and quality assurance systems to support the delivery, assessment and internal verification of SQA qualifications. Britlink and SQA will: visit your centre to discuss details of the qualifications you wish to offer and provide detailed guidance on the approval process advise on building the required capability of structures and systems to support your application provide the approval form and assist with the completion of this to meet SQA's approval and internal verification criteria scrutinise the completed application form prior to submission for approval Approval as an SQA centre Once we have all the information we need, we will contact your nominated SQA Co-ordinator to arrange a convenient date and time for a centre approval visit by an SQA Systems Approver and confirm the arrangements in writing. The Systems Approver will look for evidence that your centre has the potential to meet the criteria for approval as an SQA centre. An SQA External Verifier (EV) for each subject area involved in your initial qualification approval application may accompany the Systems Approver on the centre approval visit. Alternatively the EV may arrange a Skype call with you., Collyer Quay, The Arcade, #14-04/0, Singapore 041

It will depend on the information you provide in your application and the qualifications you wish to offer. If the visiting approval team is large it would be helpful if you could provide a room where they could meet during the visit. At the end of the visit the EV will provide us with a verbal report outlining their recommendations. The Systems Approver and the EV(s) will provide written reports to SQA Approvals department and, if systems approval and at least one subject approval are successful, your organisation will receive SQA centre approval. Your SQA Co-ordinator will receive written confirmation of the decision within days of the approval visit/skype calls taking place. Recognition If you are successfully delivering qualifications with another awarding body regulated by Ofqual, the UK regulator of qualifications, examinations and assessments, it may be possible for us to approve your centre without a visit. Our Qualifications Approval and Verification team will be able to offer further guidance on this, please contact us for more information.
