Government College of Technology, Coimbatore 13 ANNUAL REPORT 2012-13 Respected Vice Chancellor (O) Dr P. Kaliraj, distinguished faculties, honoured graduates, parents, colleagues, friends from press and media. Good evening, It is a distinct pleasure to be in GCT this evening to celebrate the biggest milestone to date in the lives of you, the young men and women before me. Robert Gallagher said that change is inevitable. As you stand on the border of moving into life beyond Academy, change will be inevitable! It is very rewarding to see that you have completed another important step in your life-long learning. It s inevitable that you will face new and exciting challenges in future ahead. So, for everyone here this evening, it s a very special occasion. During this occasion I am delighted to share the events happened in GCT during this academic year with you all. GCT has been funded with Rs.12 Crores under Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme Phase II scheme by the World Bank to scale up research activities and quality of post graduate courses. The privileged Non-GATE PG scholars and Full-Time Ph.D. scholars are provided teaching assistance and financial assistance to Teaching and Technical staff for attending training programmes, workshops and conferences to enrich their knowledge. The scheme also supports to enhance Industry Institute interaction, Institutional reforms and Quality of Technical Education. The academic results of previous year 2011-2012 were very encouraging. 100% Pass result in all PG courses and in UG courses, Civil, Electrical & Electronics, Electronics and Communication and Instrumentation Engineering achieved 100% pass outs. 98% pass in Production Engineering and Industrial Biotechnology. 97% pass in Computer Science, 96% pass in IT and 96% pass in Mechanical Engineering. GCT acts as a nodal centre for Anna University Zone 9 and 10. The Zonal Coordinator Conducts examinations and evaluate answer papers for all 85 affiliated Engineering colleges in and around Coimbatore. The college also accepted the responsibility of selling of applications for BE/B.Tech courses, issuing of Hall tickets for MBA/MCA and ME courses through online and co-ordinated in the conduction of TNPSC, Bank, GATE exams, etc.
This year 54 new TRB staffs joined GCT and the total staff strength increased to 138 and 34 new PG posts were sanctioned for all PG courses. Approximately 930 girls students are staying in two ladies hostels and 1800 boys staying in five hostels. An academic award ceremony was held to appreciate and motivate all Teaching, Non-Teaching, Administrative staff and Students for their achievements at various counts and the up gradation of qualifications. A new building constructed was named after the first Principal of this Institute, Prof.Dr.Ruthra. The building was inaugurated on September 5, 2012 by the Hon'ble Chief Minister Dr.J.Jayalalitha through Video Conferencing. The college website, www.gct.ac.in was revamped with the latest features and launched on December 13, 2012. Under TEQIP phase II programme, a team of 42 faculty members visited TCS, Chennai on 29th October 2012, and a group of women faculties including myself attended "Enhancing Leadership Capacities and Potential Among Professional Women", program conducted by the IIM, Ahmedabad during October 9-12, 2012 as part of an Industry-Institute interaction. GCT alumni association has been assisting students who suffer financial crunch. Er.R.Rajagopal (1961 batch alumni), donated Rs.5.05 Lakhs to the needy students and established endowment scholarship worth Rs. 2.5 Lakhs. Department of Civil Engineering organized TEQIP sponsored FDP on (i) "Software Application in Civil Engineering", (ii) "Ground Improvement Techniques for Weak Soils" and (iii) "Advances in Construction Techniques & Materials" during the year 2012. Special lectures were delivered by scientists from Montach University, USA, Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research, Kuwait, Leibniz University of Hannover and the Director, Fifth Generation Tech, Canada. Numbers of articles were published in journals by the faculties of this department. Final year students have been placed in reputed industries like TCS, Consolidated Construction Consortium Limited, Cap Gemini, and INAUTIX. Department of Mechanical Engineering organized TEQIP sponsored FDP on "Vibration and Tribology related issues in Industry" and
another on "Non-Traditional Optimisation Techniques for Research and Industrial Needs during the year 2012. The German based motorcycle and engine manufacturing giant BMW, and the TAFE, the third largest tractor manufacturer in the world, and ABB, a power and automation industry explained the integrated sociotechnical problems and solutions. The students participated in various competitions held in different colleges and won numerous awards. More than 70% of the final year students were placed in reputed firms like Robert Bosch, Ashok Leyland, ABB, TCS, and Tafe Triad. Department of Production Engineering conducted remedial classes on the subjects: Machine Elements Design, Production Technology, Theory of Metal Machining and Modern Control Technology to improve the technical and programming knowledge. PRAXIS, a National Level Technical Symposium was conducted in February 2012. It was a very good platform for the students to showcase their ideas through their papers and projects. Green innovation has been initiated by this department to make our campus free from pollution and make energy as renewable and won award for their ideas of campus sustainability from Pondicherry Chief Minister. Good numbers of articles were published in international journals by the faculties of this department. Nearly 94% of the total strength has been placed in well reputed companies like GODREJ, TVS GROUPS, TCS, TAFE and FLOW SERVE. Department of EEE / EIE organized two TEQIP sponsored FDP on "Research opportunities in Contemporary issues of Engineering", Engineering solutions through MATLAB", National level workshop on Mobile controlled Robots, conducted in collaboration with ROBOTRYST and IIT, Delhi, Placement Training Programme on Soft skills development and a National level Conference on Electrical and Instrumentation Systems (NCEIS). The department got the privilege of conducting three AICTE sponsored FDP on Efficient control of Renewable energy and its conservation, Avenues for advanced research in modern power electronics and hybrid energy systems and Smart Grid - Opportunities and Challenges. NSS camp was conducted by the department in a village Karadimadai. Remedial coaching classes for the slow learners of II and III year were conducted on the subjects: DC machines and transformers, Principles of microprocessor and microcontroller, Electronic circuit design with IC's, Electric circuit Theory, etc. Sizable numbers of articles were
published in International journals by the faculties of this department. More than 85% of EEE and EIE students and were placed in reputed companies. Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering conducted two TEQIP sponsored FDP on "2D Signal Processing using Wavelets" and Sensor Networks and Cloud Computing, four workshops and two Seminars. In order to strengthen the knowledge of students, special training classes were conducted for subjects: Microprocessors and Microcontrollers, & C, C++ Programming and Soft Skills. ECE department received a financial grant of Rs.18.24 lakhs from the DST under women scientist scheme-a (WOS-A) for the project entitled "Low power VLSI Design for Image Processing Applications". Numbers of articles were published in International journals by the faculties of this department. Nearly 90% of the final year ECE students have been hired by well reputed companies like FCS, TCS, ROBERT BOSCH, DE SHAW. Department of Computer Science and Engineering conducted three TEQIP sponsored one week FDP on "Information Retrieval and Data Mining Techniques", "Research issues in Software Defined Networks", NS 3 Network Simulator and seven workshops. Er.Indranel Guptha, Microsoft, Hyderabad and Dr. Sandeep Chatterjee, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of SHUV GRAY LLC delivered a special lecture to the faculty and research scholars. The Department also conducted TEQIP sponsored National Conference on Recent Advances in Computer Vision and Information Technology. The Faculties of this department delivered guest lectures, acted as expert member, Conference chair for other institutions and has represented Anna University, Chennai by being part of the Inspection Committee for affiliation. The website www.xorticanz.com was launched with video tutorials, e-books and other placement materials. Remedial classes were conducted on Data Structures, Database Management System, and Theory of Computation. Faculties of this department published papers in reputed International journals. CSE / IT department received a financial grant of Rs. 2.78 lakhs from the DST under Inspire scheme. Nearly 90% of the final year CSE / IT students have been hired by well reputed companies like DE SHAW, Microsoft, CTS, Infosis, TCS, HCL, ROBERT BOSCH. Department of Industrial Biotechnology organized one day workshop on
"Intellectual Property rights". The students participated in various competitions held in different colleges and won numerous awards. 75% of the students have been placed in companies such as TCS, CAPGEMINI, INAUTIX, and ZIFO TECHNOLOGY. Most of the students pursue their higher studies in premier institutions across the nation and abroad. Department of Mathematics conducted remedial Course in Engineering Mathematics to Pre-final and Final Year B.E / B.Tech students and a bridge Course in Engineering Mathematics was organized for Lateral Entry students. Faculties of the Physics and Chemistry departments published good number of papers in reputed International journals. Department of English conducted TEQIP sponsored FDP on Effective Communication in Engineering Class rooms. Tamil Mandram, Fine Arts Club, Literary and Debating Society are looked after by this department, and shoulder the responsibility for the printing of College Calendar, Magazine and Newsletter.
