Student etext With Reading Street, students are no longer forbidden to write in their textbooks. Through the student etext, students can search, highlight, zoom, take notes, or scroll through the book's contents. Using these tools, students can practice powerful reading strategies like annotation to help them monitor their comprehension while reading. Students also have access to audio support. Teacher Features Pearson Realize includes features that help you plan and deliver Reading Street instruction effectively and efficiently. There are several resources to help you plan for instruction and assessment that aligns with the Common Core State Standards. On Pearson Realize you will also be able to find content quickly, customize content, differentiate instruction, and access data to inform your instruction. Copyright 2015 by Pearson Education, Inc. Common Core Resources Let's start with the Common Core resources available on Pearson Realize. Common Core 101 is a tool that will help you understand what you need to know about the Common Core State Standards, how you can be sure your instruction serves the intent of the Common Core, and how Reading Street will help you meet the goals of the Common Core. Common Core 101 focuses on key standards and explains what they are, why they are important, and how Reading Street helps you guide students in meeting the goals of the standards. To access Common Core 101 on Pearson Realize, go to the Reading Street Table of Contents, and click Show teacher resources. Then, select Common Core 101 in the resources list. The College and Career Readiness Planners, or CCR Planners, are tools you can use to plan for each week of instruction. These planners provide correlations between the Common Core State Standards and the Reading Street content for each week of instruction. To access the CCR Planners on Pearson Realize, select the unit from the Table of Contents and click Show teacher resources. Then, select CCR/SB Planners in the resources list. To help you assess how students are making progress toward College and Career Readiness, use the CCR Assessment Guide, which is also located in the teacher resources list. This guide provides information about the format of College and Career Readiness tests and how you can use Reading Street assessments to give students practice with unique test item formats. Locate Content Pearson Realize provides point- of- use access to lesson content and instructional resources. From the unit view, you'll select a week of instruction, and then choose a specific lesson. Once you select the lesson, all of the resources you'll need for the lesson, including the Teacher's Edition, Student Edition, and supplemental resources, will appear. When you select the etext within a specific lesson, you'll be directed to the first page of the lesson so you can quickly begin to plan or deliver instruction. Powerful search tools help you find the content you need by standard or keyword. To search by standard, click Standards at the top of the page. Next, select the desired standard. A results page will display all of the activities and assessments that are aligned to the standard. Copyright 2015 by Pearson Education, Inc. All Rights Reserved 8

Customize Content Pearson Realize allows you to easily modify content to meet your students' needs. You have the option to add, delete, or rearrange content within each lesson. To customize content, choose a lesson, and then select the Customize drop- down menu. If you'd like to add content, select Edit from the drop- down menu. Navigate to the appropriate resource and click Add. You have the option to: upload a file from your computer; insert a link; add a title; leave a note for your students; or add more available content items. For example, to help meet the needs of English language learners in your classroom, you may choose to insert a link to an external Web resource to help build background knowledge on a topic relevant to this week's reading selection. Leaving notes for your students allows you to provide additional directions, reinforce instruction, or provide personal learning support to students. To rearrange content, you'll follow the same steps needed to add content. Choose a lesson and then select the Customize drop- down menu. From here, select Rearrange and simply drag and drop lesson content into the desired order. If you'd like to delete content, click the Remove button next to the content or instructional resource you'd like to remove from the lesson. In addition to adding or deleting content, you can also customize Reading Street assessments. From the Table of Contents, select the Create Content drop- down menu and then select Build a Test. Pearson Realize walks you through the steps to customize the assessment to best suit your needs. Copyright 2015 by Pearson Education, Inc. All Rights Reserved 9

Differentiate Instruction You can assign activities and assessments to one or more classes, groups, or individual students, allowing you to differentiate instruction based on students' needs. Let's say you notice that several students are struggling with vocabulary during a close read of the week's main selection. Their lack of vocabulary knowledge is preventing them from comprehending the text. You stop to discuss the words in context, and then also decide to assign those students a vocabulary game to help reinforce the vocabulary and deepen their understanding. The students' performance on the game will help you determine whether or not they have mastered the vocabulary. To assign an activity or assessment to one student or a group of students, find the content you'd like to assign within a specific lesson, and then click Assign. You can customize the title, start and end date, and instructions for the activity. Use the Instructions box to scaffold instruction by providing directions and support based on your students' needs. In this case, since the vocabulary was discussed during a whole- class lesson, you may want to remind students of how the words were used in context. Use the Instructions box to make these notations. Finally, enter the name of the student or group you'd like to assign the activity or assessment to, and click Assign. Remediation activities are automatically assigned when students take assessments online. The activities assigned correspond to skills and strategies that the students need practice on. You can also assign remediation activities. Copyright 2015 by Pearson Education, Inc. All Rights Reserved 10

Access Data Pearson Realize provides access to data that can help you make important instructional decisions. Use data gathered from tests and assignments that are completed online to track student mastery and monitor student progress. To get started, select Data at the top of the page. You will find easy- to- read, color- coded graphs as well as clickable data points that allow you to analyze data quickly. The data you can access shows: standards mastery; test scores; overall progress; and usage. While Pearson Realize does the work of gathering the data, you'll be able to focus your time on analyzing the data to help determine the next steps for instruction. Doing so will help you find the path to academic success for each and every one of your students. For more information regarding access to data on the Pearson Realize platform, visit MyPearsonTraining.com. Copyright 2015 by Pearson Education, Inc. All Rights Reserved 11
