SPECIAL GUEST SPEAKER DR. MARC LAMONT HILL Dr. Marc Lamont Hill is one of the leading hip-hop generation intellectuals in the country. His work, which covers topics such as culture, politics, and education, has appeared in numerous journals, magazines, books, and anthologies. Dr. Hill has lectured widely and provides regular commentary for media outlets like NPR, Washington Post, Essence magazine, and The New York Times. He is the host of the nationally syndicated television show Our World with Black Enterprise, which airs Sunday mornings on TV One and broadcast markets around the country. He also provides regular commentary for CNN, MSNBC, and Fox News Channel, where he was a political contributor and regular guest on The O Reilly Factor. An award-winning writer, Dr. Hill is a columnist and editorat-large for the Philadelphia Daily News. Susan Powell Susan E. Powell is a native of Hallsboro, NC. Graduate with a B.S. in Business Education from Fayetteville State University, MSA Non-Profit Administration from West Chester University, currently enrolled in a Doctoral Studies program at Wilmington University in Higher Education and Leadership. She has served as an educator on various levels for the past thirty years. She was the recipient of the 2009 College of Business and Public Affairs outstanding graduate in the MSA program at West Chester University. Serve as the Director of Upward Bound, Freshmen Academic Advisor, FYE instructor. Member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Proud mother of two: Staccato K. Powell 2007 graduate of The Lincoln University and Nicole Powell 2012 graduate of Spelman College. Since 2009, Dr. Hill has been on the faculty of Columbia University as Associate Professor of Education at Teachers College. He also holds an affiliated faculty appointment in African American Studies at the Institute for Research in African American Studies at Columbia University.

Since his days as a youth in Philadelphia, Marc Seminar Facilitators Lamont Hill has been a social justice activist and organizer. He is a founding board member of My5th, a nonprofit organization devoted to educating youth about their legal Kevan Turman Born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Kevan L. Turman has planted his roots on the east coast. Having attended Philadelphia Public Schools until he was college age, Mr. Turman decided to venture slightly outside of the city to attend The Lincoln University in 1997. Upon graduation, Mr. Turman returned to MBNA to serve as a PGA Tour Coordinator and Management Development Program Participant, respectively. Though the corporate world proved to be one of great knowledge and experience, it was Mr. Turman s vision to return to his Alma Mater and serve as the Lincoln Man he was groomed to be while still a student. In November 2003 he returned to serve as Tour Coordinator in the Admissions department. Yvette Gaines For more than a decade, Yvette Gaines of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has committed her life to developing people into their full leadership potential while encouraging them to realize their destinies and purposes. Having the access to unlock latent abilities and watching people grow through limitations to the maximization of such abilities is what brings her great joy. Through 18 years of marriage, being the mother of three, a minister, an artist and entrepreneur, Yvette has learned to seek balance in her life in a way that produces peace. rights and responsibilities. He is also a board member and organizer of the Philadelphia Student Union. Dr. Hill also works closely with the ACLU Drug Reform Project, focusing on drug informant policy. In addition to his political work, Dr. Hill continues to work directly with African American and Latino youth. In 2001, he started a literacy project that uses hip-hop culture to increase school engagement and reading skills among high school students. He also continues to organize and teach adult literacy courses for high school dropouts in Philadelphia and Camden. In 2005, Ebony magazine named him one of America s top 30 black leaders under 30 years old. Dr. Hill is the author of Beats, Rhymes, and Classroom Life: Hip-Hop Pedagogy and the Politics of Identity and co-editor of Media, Learning, and Sites of Possibility and The Anthropology of Education Reader. His newest book is The Classroom and the Cell: Conversations on Black Life in America.
