1 Renaissance High School 6565 West Outer Drive Detroit, MI 48235 (313) 416-4600 Ms. Anita Williams, Principal Instructor: Hours: Prep Period Room Ms. C. Anderson B C D, E 305 COURSE DESCRIPTION: This is a college preparatory course introducing the student to the study of forensic science. It is a full year course that explores topics seen frequently in popular television shows as well as techniques in many career fields. COURSE GOALS: Students will use their tools they have developed in earlier science courses and apply them to the exciting field of forensic science. The goal is to be able to problem solve using the scientific method, and see a real world application of the scientific techniques they have learned up until this point. Materials: 1. Saferstein, Richard, Ph.D (2012). Forensic Science : An Introduction. Ubber Saddle Ricer New Jersey: Pearson Prentice Hall 2. 3 ring binder 7. 12 inch ruler (w/metric markings) 3. Loose leaf paper 8. 2 red pens 4. internet access outside of class 9. graph paper 5. 3 dividers with pockets and tabs 10. PLANNER 6. Pens (blue or black only) AND pencils 11. Scientific calculator 12. Lab Fee: $5.00 (one time lab fee) SPIRAL NOTEBOOKS ARE NOT ALLOWED THE REPLACEMENT COST FOR LOST FORENSIC SCIENCE BOOK IS $80.00!!!

Overview of Topics: History of Forensic Science Forensic Science Careers The Crime Scene Physical Evidence Drugs/Toxicity Serology DNA Trace Evidence Forensics of Fire Fingerprints Impressions Document Examination Autopsies Attendance Policy and Make-up Work Students are expected to be present daily and on time. In the event of absence, it is the student s responsibility to bring an absence excuse from a parent or guardian within three (3) school days of the student s return to class. All assignments will be posted on the calendar in class as well as online, always be sure to ask THREE classmates what you missed as well, if they say nothing ask someone else we never do nothing. Students who have not brought notes within three days will not be given make-up work. There will be no make-up work given for truancy or unexcused absences. Students must take note of the ONE make-up quiz or test date, which is always written on the announcement board and is typically the next A or D day during BOTH lunches Missed labs can not be made up, if you have an excused absence for a lab you may either get the data or an alternative assignment from me. Students may turn in projects early. However, if the student is absent on the day the project is due, it will NOT be accepted a day later. Get an early start on major projects and meet the deadline that is given. Students participating in extra curricular activities that make class absences necessary will have work due the next school day after the event. Tardy Policy Tardiness is not acceptable. I will allow any student with a valid pass entrance into my classroom and they will be able to make-up anything they missed. There will be no passes to go get your ID, a uniform shirt, or your materials to class so please arrive ON TIME and PREPARED! I start class right at the bell, this may mean tardiness will result in missing an assignment, homework collection, or important class material. There are boxes right when you enter my room, this is for you to place your homework in. I will pick up the homework from the box 1 minute after the bell. After I have picked up the homework I will not accept any late assignments. At the start of the semester there will be a tardy quiz entered in the gradebook, everyone will start with a 100%, every time you are tardy your tardy quiz score will fall by 5%. You WILL be marked tardy if you have to leave your seat to pick up materials. 2

Extra Credit Do to the leniency of my grading scale there will be NO extra credit offered. Each student receives equal opportunity for success. All assignments are due as stated. Individualized requests regarding make up work for poor-planning on the part of the student will not be honored. Grading Scale Distribution of Credit A 100% - 85% Tests /projects 35% B 84% - 75% Quizzes 25% C 74% - 65% Labs 25% D 64% - 50% Class work 5% Due to the leniency of the grading Homework 10% scale, there will be no rounding in the computation of the course grade (example 49.999999 % = F) Test/Projects: All tests will be announced at least a week in advance and will in most cases cover several chapters it is important that you are studying your notes every day to be prepared. All projects will be assigned at least 3 weeks before their due date. Quizzes: I reserve the right to quiz over ANY material we have covered at ANY time. Do not expect me to announce when all quizzes will be. I also have been known to give pop quizzes for having the materials required for the course, even if we haven t used a red pen in weeks bring it everyday! Labs: It is expected that all your labs are in the order I describe in class, if there is not order described in class the order is expected to be standard which is: Class work: Every day will start with bell work, it is imperative that you participate in the class work as this is the way I often check for understanding. If class work is completed in time you will receive full credit, bell work is the only work in class that you will not be excused or given the opportunity to make up in the event of an absence. Homework: As stated I collect homework within the first two minutes of class it is imperative that you have at least tried every part of the assignment as I frequently grade for completion. I will NOT take any assignments after I collect from the bin. 3

Letters of Recommendation Only students that receive an A or B in the course may secure letters of recommendation. I will honor letters of recommendation request early if it becomes statistically impossible for a student s final grade to fall below a B for the course. Students must make request at least one week before they are due and should include a listing of their extra-curricular activities in order to secure a better letter of recommendation. Although it is highly unlikely to occur if a student has met the academic standard, I may decline the offer to write a letter of recommendation at my own discretion. Classroom Rules All students are expected to behave like young adults and behave in accordance to DPS and RHS policy at all times, no exceptions. 1. I respect you, you respect me, you respect your peers. 2. NO electronic devices, I see it or hear it, I take it! 3. There are NO passes unless it is an EMERGENCY 4. It will not be returned to a student, only the parent/guardian at the scheduled pick up times in the main office. Progress Reports Grades are available on Parent Connect as well as StudentConnect. I update grades regularly, expect to see several grades entered per week as homework and classwork is given daily and there are weekly quizzes. Substitute Teachers: In the unlikely event of my absence, a substitute teacher will be provided. Students are expected to be on their best behavior. They are expected to follow the rules and routines as if I were present. Any student who receives a negative report will be disciplined immediately upon my return. The extent of that discipline will be determined by the behavior displayed. All sub work is worth a quiz grade. Students MUST turn in each assignment to the substitute for credit. Any assignment not given to the substitute at the end of the class hour will neither be accepted nor graded. All papers must have name, date, and hour on them.
