HLT52215 Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies Shiatsu literally translates as finger pressure, being a Japanese therapy whose origins lie in oriental medical theory and traditional Japanese massage techniques. The Japanese adopted Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practices and enhanced its methods to develop the unique form of treatment now known as Shiatsu. As a Shiatsu therapist, you will treat the whole body, as well as specific problem areas, by addressing both physical and emotional wellbeing. The Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies, delivered by EastWest College (RTO ID: 6148 CRICOS: 02394E), is designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge to work as a professional Shiatsu Therapist. The Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies requires the completion of 22 units, which includes 19 core units and 3 electives including one from the business management group. This is the current Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies qualification from the Health (HLT15) Training Package. The units have been divided into 12 topic areas (subjects) so that similar and related units are delivered and assessed together to avoid repetition. Upon successful completion of all assessment requirements for each unit in this course, you will be issued the HLT52515 Diploma of Shiatsu and Oriental Therapies by EastWest College (RTO ID: 6148 CRICOS: 02394E). Course duration 50 weeks in 5 x 10 week terms (approximately 14 months). Students will be required to attend theoretical and practical classes from 9am to 5 pm each week. Each day has 2 x 3.5 hour classes. Students will also be required to complete additional course work, and should allocate at least 15 hours per week for home study. International students will be supported for 6 hours of self-paced study per week. Delivery location Training is delivered in a variety of locations. Pathways This qualification reflects the role of Shiatsu & Oriental therapists who work with clients presenting with soft tissue dysfunction, musculoskeletal imbalance or restrictions in range of motion (ROM)as well as wishing to maintain health and well being. Practitioners may be self-employed or work within a larger health service. Students who complete this course may wish to continue their education into such courses such as Diploma of Reflexology Diploma of Remedial Massage
Entry requirements All students are expected to have appropriate language, literacy and numeracy abilities to allow them to read text books, understand and apply workplace information and write responses to assessment tasks. Prior to being offered a place in this course, you will complete a brief language, literacy and numeracy assessment to ensure we can support you appropriately during your course. All students will also be required to attend a selection interview as part of the enrolment process and demonstrate an interest in, knowledge of, and suitability for work in the health care industry. Students must have the appropriate visa to study in Australia. Classes will run 2 days per week. Morning classes run from 9am 12:30pm. Afternoon classes run from 1:30pm 5pm. Students will attend classes or Clinic placement 2 days per week. Each day includes 7 hours of training, divided into 2 x 3.5 hour sessions. In the 200 hours of Student Clinic placement a minimum of 100 hours must be in Direct Client Contact (i.e. providing massage services). Clinic Students will participate in clinic sessions to gain practical hands-on experience in a real working environment under close supervision of the teachers. Teachers will assess skills in the clinic and/or offer additional one-on-one instruction if required. Students will also be required to complete a certain amount of time in each of the various clinic roles, including providing remedial massage, reception, taking money, providing receipts, and so on. A qualified Massage Therapist and trainer/assessor from EastWest College will supervise all students throughout their student clinic hours and will provide mentoring and support to each student. A trainer/assessor will confirm the student s clinic skills, recording their observations and provide feedback as they go. Assessment arrangements Assessment requirements for each subject are outlined in the Student Assessment Booklet provided to students at the start of each cluster. Assessment is typically conducted through: Completion of projects Observation of practical skills by the assessor in the classroom Observations in student clinic Reponses to case studies and scenarios Quizzes Written Questions Final assessment of some units will require assessment of practical skills during the clinic. Students will not be marked competent in some units until sufficient skills have been demonstrated in the student clinic. Assessment tools and instruments Assessment Tasks are outlined in each Training Manual and in the Student Assessment Booklet. Additional costs Re-assessment If an additional assessment is required an additional re-assessment fee will be charged. Recognition of Prior Learning An Initial Assessment is required prior to enrolment in RPL program. RPL units are charged at 50% of the full price for each unit of competency. $500 initial assessment fee plus 50% of unit fee for each cluster Uniforms $35 per shirt One EastWest Polo shirt will be issued on enrolment. Subsequent shirts cost $35 each. Access to a Computer, Laptop or ipad All students will be required to have access to a computer, laptop or ipad for typing of assignments, access to the internet and email. Credits or Recognition for previous study and experience EastWest College may grant credit for units of competency that you have already completed. There is no charge for Credits. Just, fill in the Credit Application Form, provide certified copies of your transcripts and submit as part of your application, or provide this at your Entry Interview. EastWest College also offers a comprehensive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) program.
