St Catherine of Siena T: 9743 2166 E: principal@scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au NEWSLETTER W: www.scmeltonwest.catholic.edu.au Term 4, Week 9 December 8th 2017 Advent Week 2 There are times in the waiting where you start to think you ve dropped off God s radar. Its easy to think you've fallen through the cracks, or worse, been completely forgotten by God. From your vantage point there s only silence. But God has not forgotten you or His promise. If you feel like you can t make it one more step, or if you ve already stumbled and hit the deck, He is holding out His hand. Even when you are falling, hope in the Lord, stand on His promise, no matter what the circumstance, and you will find new strength - His strength - to carry on. Father, bring me through the fire and rising tide. You have given the Holy Christ in exchange for my life. Will You not also, with Him, freely give me all things? I am clinging to You and waiting in expectation, Don t let me sink. Hold on to me. Amen. From An Advent Journey of Hope by Louie Giglio Dear Families, As we come to the end of the year it is at this time that we say goodbye to some staff members. Mrs Lien Barnabas is moving on at the end of this year to pursue her career closer to home. Lien has been at St Catherine of Siena since April 2016 and in that time has worked hard to ensure that the Prep children in her care have had a settled and great start to their schooling. Lien s calm, yet firm manner with the children ensured that they soon became very comfortable in her presence and were always aware of her expectations of them. She has a way of working with each student so that she can get to know the strengths and challenges in order to best assist them in becoming independent learners. Lien has always made the most of every opportunity to get to know the parents and has made herself available to discuss their child's learning. Although we will miss her we wish her all the very best as she takes up her new position. Next Wednesday at 9:15am we have our End of Year Mass, this will be followed by morning tea in the hall. You are all invited to join with us for our final whole school liturgy to celebrate the 2017 school year, we would love to see you there. Next Friday we have our annual whole school picnic at Maddingley Park. This is always a great way to end the year so if you are free we would love to have you join us for the day. If you have not already sent back forms indicating whether your child is being taken by you or going with us on the bus please do so, so that we can finalise arrangements. If you will be taking your child home from Maddingley Park please remember to see your child s teacher first so that they can be signed out. Have a great weekend everyone. A few weeks ago, I introduced The Zones of Regulation in this section of the newsletter and stated that for the remainder of the year, the teachers and children will be developing a Zones Toolkit. The Zones Toolkit is where each person thinks of the ways they feel; and how they can use tools to self-regulate their emotions. The image above is familiar to students, as they have been discussing and associating the colours with the emotions. They also have thought about tools they can use to get back into the GREEN ZONE. Here are some of the tools that some students have chosen to put in their Zones Toolkit When I am in the red zone I can ask for help to get back in the Green Zone When I am in the yellow Zone I can do a hook up (hug myself) to get back in the Green Zone When I am frustrated and in the yellow zone I can take some deep breaths and walk away When I m feeling silly (yellow zone) I can do a brain break to get focused (green zone) When I m feeling bored, (the blue zone) I can do a brain break or change my mindset to get back into Green When I am in the green Zone I feel good about myself and learn Students are becoming familiar with the zones and with a consistent approach across the school, we aim to assist children in self regulating by suggesting the tools in their toolkit. You might like to discuss or use the Zones of Regulation at home to address how children (and parents) are feeling. If you would like any additional information or resources please contact me and I d be happy to share. Have a happy week. Kristie Browning Wellbeing and Special Needs Leader
