Report to the South Central District Pastor, Teacher, Delegate Conference Pastor Wayne L. Fischer, Director January, 2013 www.campshilohretreat.org 903-855-1800 3335 FM 21 Pittsburg, TX 75686 Strengthening the Foundation for Jesus Ministry at Camp Shiloh Thank You! A year ago October, we launched our campaign Strengthening the Foundation for Jesus Ministry at Camp Shiloh. Our debt at that time was $522,400. As of December 31, 2012 that debt has been paid down to $377,799. That means 27+% of that debt has been paid off. This campaign continues and the match remains available to match any and all gifts that are given to alleviate that debt. Praise God for what his people have already accomplished and may His love continue to move in the hearts of his people to continue to offer their gifts. Motel Suites Building Project Last January you heard about the work that was beginning to improve our facilities so we can facilitate more ministry events. Those 10 new suites are now complete and have been used by many people. Thanks be to God and to all those who supported this effort with their gifts of labor and donations. College Aged Retreat December 21-22 marked an important date as we hosted a group of college age young men and women. It has been a desire for Camp Shiloh to better serve this group, realizing that our summer camps currently end once youth enter college. As a result of discussions with this group we are planning Camp Shiloh s FIRST ANNUAL COLLEGE AGED YOUTH SUMMER RETREAT. It is scheduled for Monday to Wednesday, July 29-31, 2013. These young adults are willing to work to make this successful, but they need YOUR support in promotion. All college age youth of every congregation in our District are invited. We are looking for pastors who are willing to get those youth from his congregation ready to play an important role in this event such as: doing a devotion, leading a discussion, or organizing activities. We are looking toward to being not overly scheduled but having fellowship time to do what comes up. Attached is a form for getting your input and commitment to support this special event. 5 th Annual Women s Retreat Taste and See that the Lord is Good Ladies, please check your calendars and mark March 8-9, 2013 for our 5 th annual Women's Retreat. Our presenter will be Marilyn Miller. This retreat will provide the opportunity to study how God's Word sets the tone for our life, much as an appetizer does for a special meal and how God's feast provides all of the essential nutrients that we find in a wellplanned main course. And he gives us the sweet joy of special desserts, too. As we go through the day, we will take note of things to think about next time we prepare a meal. Dates: Friday, March 8 at 6:30 PM until Saturday, March 9 at 3:00 PM Taste & See that the Lord Is Good Please sign up by February 27. 1

Fees: Register by February 6 and the fee is $79; after February 6 it is $94. He will provide scriptural insights to empower men to live their faith not only in their homes and congregations but also in their workplace and in day-to-day situations. Dates: Friday, April 5 at 6:30 PM until Saturday, April 6 at 3:00 PM Please sign up by March 27. Fees: Register by March 5 and the fee is $79; after March 27, it is $94. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday. There is no cost to these servants. In fact, if housing is needed on Friday night, dorm space will be provided at no cost. WELS Memorial Day Retreat This weekend, from May 24-27, much of Camp Shiloh has been reserved for WELS/ELS families to come to Camp Shiloh for some relaxation, fun and devotions. Each day there will be a potluck at noon in the pavilion. Other meals will be on your own. Each morning you will be able to purchase ala carte cereal, fruit, milk and coffee from 7:30 9:00. All housing rates are reduced by 25% for this event, and supporters will still receive an additional 15% discount. Summer Camps Let a highlight of your children s summer be a week at Camp Shiloh. The theme for the Teen Camp is To Know God Is To Love God. The theme the July Camps is To Know God Is To Love God. This year s summer camps are: Teen Camp (Youth entering 9 th - 12 th grades) June 23-28 Leader: Youth Discipleship Faith and Music Camp (Youth entering 3 rd - 9 th grades) July 7-12 Leader: Prof. James Tiefel Pathfinders Camp (Youth entering 3 rd - 5 th grades) July 14-19 Leader: Pastor Fischer Trailblazers Camp (Youth entering 6 th - 8 th grades) July 21-26 Leader: Pastor Fischer Registration Fee by May 1: $250 Registration Fee after May 1: $275 2

To register, complete a registration form and send the fee to the office, or you can register online. All campers must complete a parental consent form and a medical release form before attending. *A camper can get a $25 discount if he/she brings a friend not a family member to your camp who has never before attended a camp at Camp Shiloh. This is for each such friend up to 10! *Drivers from 4 hours or more away can stay during the camp in a cabin without cost if they are willing to serve in some way such as in the kitchen or mowing grass, etc. Drivers may need to share a cabin, depending on the need. If the driver has family members or friends who came along, there would be a cost for them. *If needed, congregations or groups of congregations can apply for transportation assistance at the following rates for 1 round trip: $.10 per mile if they send 1-5 campers; $.20 per mile if they send 6-10 campers; $.30 per mile if they send 11-15 campers; or $.40 per mile if they send 16-20 campers. (Please note that this is for the total number of campers from a congregation or area, whether they carpool or not. The intent is to assist evenly for campers without causing a financial problem for Camp Shiloh. Also note that if this is applied for, the checks will be made out to the congregation.) *Enrollment Application and Campership Forms are now available online or from the office. COUNSELORS: This year again we will have 4 counselors 2 female and 2 male. We are recruiting counselors from MLC, and they have already been contacted asking to have our request posted. Counselors are being asked to serve from July 1-28. Each counselor will be paid $1,200, but if 1 or 2 of them are certified lifeguards they will be paid $1,500. Otherwise we will need to hire lifeguards. An application form is available online or from the office. JUNIOR COUNSELORS: 4 junior counselors are also needed for the camps in July likely 2 males and 2 females per session. Junior counselors receive free housing and meals but no other compensation. They must have completed at least the 9 th grade. Junior counselors form a service group who assist the counselors and director. An application form is available online or from the office. Advent Preparation Friday and Saturday, November 18-19, 2013 will be a time for God s people to come together for a weekend devoted to Advent preparation. This year come for some study and devotional time to focus on The Origins and Traditions of Christmas. The cost is $49 and includes lodging, meals and materials. Please register by November 1. Family Getaways & Reunions Some families come out for a weekend to reconnect. Some families gather here for a family reunion. Some families come with other church members for a relaxing time of fellowship. Families from your congregations can also have the great experiences other families have had. All individual supporters and all members of any congregation that makes an ongoing commitment to financially support this ministry receive a 15% discount year around on everything except food services. On top of that, currently all campers also receive an extra discount of 15% on cabin or motel rentals during the off season from the week after Labor Day until the week before Memorial Day. LES Field Trips We offer to host a field trip for LES groups. Costs would be determined as each event is planned. Congregational Planning or Growth Retreats Congregational leaders sometimes need a chance to get away for focused planning and preparations. Does your council need such a time or your building committee? Or could your choir use an extended uninterrupted weekend rehearsal? Other church groups have done such things. Consider Camp Shiloh for such a time. The cost would depend on facility needs and food service needs. 3

Desire to Serve Camp Shiloh Lutheran Retreat has existed now for 12 years. We have had facilities available to serve for about the last 9 years. The Lord has allowed this ministry to touch many. Yet there are many more to be reached. To explore possible event dates, call 903-855-1800 or email us at office@campshilohretreat.org or director@campshilohretreat.org or fax us at 903-855-0177, or check out our website at www.campshilohretreat.org. AND You perhaps have a variety of other activities for which you could use Camp Shiloh such as: Pioneers; Girl Pioneers; Father/Son; Mother/Daughter; Grandparent/Grandchild; Marriage Enrichment; Wedding Receptions; Christmas Parties; Anniversaries; Retirement Parties; etc. Please consider hosting your activities at Camp Shiloh. Be aware that you may have to book early to get the date you want. For 2013 many dates are already taken. In fact we have already had to turn down some requests since we were booked for that date. Future Ideas As we develop Camp Shiloh Lutheran Retreat, other areas are being considered such as retreats for: parents, singles, etc. If you have any suggestions please contact Pastor Fischer so we can consider how best to serve you in the future. Congregational Advocates Each congregation has been asked to appoint or elect a congregational advocate for Camp Shiloh so that we can better communicate with you. Some congregations have already notified us of their contacts. Some have not. Please take this opportunity to notify Pastor Fischer or Mary Fischer of your congregation s contact. Camp Helpers To help run smooth and effective camps we also rely on volunteers who cook or do other needed services. If you or someone you know would like to help us run an event or camp please contact the office to discuss possibilities. We are also looking for maintenance caretakers to do needed work around camp. Our greatest time of need is from about April to October, when our Winter Texans are not here. Please share this need with your congregation. If someone expresses interest in serving in this way, please have them contact the office. Congregational Support We walk together as a district and as a synod. Camp Shiloh serves the entire South Central District as a place for our summer youth camps, congregational gatherings, district events, and family reunions. To meet the costs of operating this camp we need the support of God s people. Each district congregation is asked to seriously consider their support of this ministry. The form for each congregation to become a supporting congregation is attached to this report as page 6. A colored logo copy will be emailed to each congregation this coming week. This means you will pray for Camp Shiloh, make sure the information is shared with your members and you will financially support this ministry as you are able. Financial support could be a percentage of your home offerings; or a set amount in your annual budget; or special offerings. As a supporting congregation all members will receive a 15% discount on rentals at Camp Shiloh. Individual Support Another important part of the financial support for Camp Shiloh is individual support. To meet the situations of individuals a number of options are available to individuals, with each type of donor named for a tree, reflecting that this is a ministry in a nature setting. (There is a separate form for individual commitments.) The options are: Living Oak donor giving monthly gifts throughout the calendar year Dogwood donor giving monthly gifts from February through May Peach donor giving monthly May through August 4

Oak donor giving monthly August through November Pine donor giving monthly November through February Crepe Myrtle donor giving quarterly throughout the calendar year Sapling donor children giving dimes quarterly throughout the calendar year Azalea donor one time gift Memorials and Honorariums A wonderful way to remember loved ones who go home to heaven is by supporting a Christian ministry. Please consider sending a memorial to Camp Shiloh. You can designate your gift for the endowment fund so the memorial gives year after year. Or you can designate your gift for the operating fund or a special need such as for the Strengthening the Foundation for Jesus Ministry at Camp Shiloh. A wonderful way to honor someone special on a birthday or an anniversary or some special accomplishment is to give a gift in their honor to a Christian ministry such as Camp Shiloh. You can designate your gift the same way you can designate a memorial. When we receive an honorarium, a note is sent to the one you honored as well as the acknowledgment that is sent to you. Financial Support Methods You can make donations or make payments for rentals by using cash, checks or credit cards. On our website you will find a way to make payments or to make a contribution by using a credit card. You can also contact Pastor Fischer for more information or to make your contribution. A form to assist you in making your gift is also found on our website. Also, please share this opportunity with the rest of your congregation. Wish List There are some things that we are not able to fund through the regular budget. Those things would enhance Camp Shiloh. Such items are on the Camp Shiloh Wish List and that list is the last page of this report, as well as on our website. Please share that with the members of your congregation, so that those who so desire to support this ministry by funding all or a portion of one of those items might be able to do what their heart desires out of love for the Lord. Visits and Preaching/Presenting It is my desire to visit with as many congregations and schools as possible. I would also like to make a presentation about Camp Shiloh Lutheran Retreat to as many congregations as possible. In some cases I may ask to visit with the pastors as I travel through a particular area. Or I would appreciate the opportunity to present at Bible Classes or other groups. In some cases I would be available to preach for a service either following your pericope or for a service focused on Camp Shiloh s ministry. The question has been asked about the cost of having me come. Part of my work is to represent Camp Shiloh. So if I am coming just to make a presentation, do not feel obliged to meet any expenses, though any travel assistance would be appreciated. If I am coming as a guest pastor, respond as you would any guest pastor. But again, if the normal mileage rate is a burden for your congregation, any amount would be appreciated. 5
