Teaching Children with Autism and Other Developmental Disabilities to Speak: Advances in Techniques to Develop Functional Verbal Communication Skills Speakers Nancy R. Kaufman, MA, CCC-SLP Tamara S. Kasper, MS, CCC-SLP, BCBA Monday and Tuesday 20 th and 21 st October, 2008 Trim Castle Hotel, Trim, Co. Meath

Course Description Many children with developmental disabilities, including autism and Down s Syndrome, are non-verbal or unintelligible in their communication behaviour. Even in the absence of oral-motor weakness many of these individuals cannot effectively communicate verbally. Advances in the process of differential diagnosis have identified many of these individuals as having childhood apraxia of speech. Incorporating specific intervention techniques that include the progression of word approximations toward target words (Nancy Kaufman s Approach) and modifications of the Kaufman Approach specific to individuals with autism (Tamara Kasper s Approach) have been found to be effective in improving speech intelligibility and functional communication in this population. This program will explain in detail how to implement the Kaufman and Kasper Approaches for improving verbal communication in children with developmental disabilities. Participants will learn how to systematically introduce motivators to encourage verbal communication, cuing and shaping techniques to improve speech intelligibility, and timing and rationale of fading cuing and shaping techniques. The goal of this seminar is to help individuals with developmental disabilities become functional and independent in verbal communication. Course Objectives On completion of the seminar participants will be able to: 1. Describe a hierarchy of simple to complex motor-speech skills. 2. Utilize this hierarchy to evaluate children who have severe speech disorders. 3. Implement a specific treatment approach using phonological simplifications for children with apraxia of speech. 4. List two skills required for the development of verbal language. 5. List three motivators that can increase the use of verbal language. 6. Explain the rationale of using reinforcement in the teaching of verbal skills. 7. Describe the process of using phonemic approximations in the teaching of verbal language. 8. Explain the rationale of using manual communication in conjunction with teaching verbal language.

Speakers Nancy R. Kaufman, M.A., CCC/SLP, is a leading expert and international lecturer on the topic of children with apraxia of speech. Her unique methods of shaping word approximations toward functional, target vocabulary and creating and applying the concept of pivot syllables, have proven highly effective for establishing verbal skills and increasing speech intelligibility for children. In addition to lecturing, Nancy remains a full-time clinician as the director of the Kaufman Children s Centre for Speech, Language, Sensory-Motor and Social Connections, Inc. in West Bloomfield, Michigan. The Kaufman Children s Centre (KCC - www.kidspeech.com) has been recognized as one of the most effective centres for treating children with childhood apraxia of speech and severe language disorders, including auditory processing and autism spectrum disorders. A recipient of the Clinical Service Award from the Michigan Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the KCC continues to grow and has earned a reputation for excellence, warmth and successful outcomes. Nancy is also the author of several well-received assessment and treatment materials related to childhood apraxia of speech. Publications to her credit include: the Kaufman Speech Praxis Test for Children, the Kaufman Speech Praxis Treatment Kits for Children (Basic and Advanced Level Kits), the Kaufman Speech Praxis Workout Book, and she is the co-author of the K & K Sign and Say: Shaping Verbal Language for Children with Autism and Other Developmental Challenges.

Tamara S. Kasper, MS, CCC/SLP, BCBA, has practiced as a paediatric speech/language pathologist with emphasis on treatment of children with challenging behaviour for over 17 years. She has specialized in treatment of children within the autism spectrum for the last 10 years. Her commitment to the children she serves led her to pursue treatment methods outside the field of speech-language pathology. Under the mentorship of Dr. Vincent Carbone and his protégé, Ms. Kasper became a Board Certified Behaviour Analyst. Ms. Kasper has also completed advanced training in application of Skinner s analysis of verbal behaviour, Greenspan s DIR approach, and Kaufman s strategies for apraxia of speech. She is co-author of the K&K Sign and Say: Shaping Verbal Language for Children with Autism and Other Developmental Challenges. Currently, Ms. Kasper directs The Centre for Autism Treatment in Wisconsin, and provides consulting services, training, and workshops to treatment teams who serve children with autism in the United States, Canada and Europe (www.kasperautism.com).
