UBC Master of Management August 2016 Entry 9-MONTH PROGRAM sauder.ubc.ca/mm

A business education that opens up possibilities In today s job market, employers place value on business knowledge and skills. The 9-month Master of Management (MM) at UBC s Sauder School of Business gives recent university graduates in non-business fields the solid business foundation needed to meet employers expectations head on. Whether your goal is to learn about the business side of your field, gain the skills needed to advance in the corporate world, or start your own company, the UBC MM is key to giving you the competitive edge you need. A comprehensive curriculum The curriculum provides theoretical and applied learning, with case studies and presentations as key components of the program. You ll gain knowledge and experience in all aspects of business, including Marketing, Operations and Logistics, and Information Technology for Management. By the time you graduate, you ll have the ability to demonstrate and apply business knowledge in any industry.

Discover The UBC Master of Management Meaningful work experience The 6-month Community Business Project enables you to apply your business skills by working on a live business project for a not-for-profit organization. You ll add valuable work experience to your resume and make a difference to the local community. Past projects have included proposing an international market expansion strategy and writing a business plan for a sustainable food business, as well as increasing employee engagement for the Vancouver General Hospital and UBC Hospital Foundation. Career development Throughout the program, the Business Career Centre plays a valuable role in helping you develop your career and effectively market your skills and qualities to a potential employer. The career and professional development programming includes effective networking strategies, resume writing, personalized career coaching, job search techniques, and mock interview practice. As a UBC MM student, you will also have access to Sauder s job and event database, which is only available to Sauder students. 1

Gain a Business Perspective Join a diverse cohort of students of all education backgrounds who come from all over the world. As a UBC Master of Management student, you ll find yourself working with and learning from classmates with Engineering, Arts, Science and other undergraduate degrees. Our courses are built around active learning, enabling you to showcase and develop your analytical and problem-solving skills through presentations, case analyses and in-class discussions. From accounting and finance to marketing and strategic management, you will gain a vital grounding in a broad spectrum of business and management disciplines. Here is a sample of the curriculum: Marketing Regardless of your role within an organization, a thorough understanding of marketing principles and strategies is essential if you are going to play an active role in its success. In this course you ll learn: How marketing fits into businesses How to describe and work with the principles of marketing How to understand and design marketing programs 2

Leadership Leadership can be found in the actions of many different people in organizations, not just within one single individual. In this course you ll learn: What effective leadership means How effective leadership is practiced Your own leadership strengths, weaknesses, hopes and aspirations Operations & Logistics Successful managers need to understand the processes behind delivering products and services, in order to efficiently execute strategic goals. In this course you ll learn: The role of business processes and how to improve them Process and capacity analysis How logistics activities produce value The real value of business school is learning to work with people, learning to present yourself, and learning to look at problems and businesses strategically. That s the real change you see in yourself over the course of the MM program. It s a transformative year. Cidnee Vaykovich UBC MM Graduate 2014 Associate, Northview Ventures 3

Built-in Work Experience Through the Community Business Project, you will have the opportunity to gain work experience while applying your new skills to solve a business problem for a local not-for-profit organization. This mandatory component of the program enables you to work as part of a team, consulting directly with a local organization to solve a real-life business challenge. Our students have worked on projects such as: Business plans and feasibility studies Fundraising and development initiatives Recruitment and retention strategies Corporate partnership strategies Marketing and social media strategies Here are two recently completed consulting projects: Introducing sustainably farmed Kenyan tea into international markets JusTea, a not-for-profit organization that helps Kenyan farmers become sustainable tea producers, wanted to expand the sale of its premium tea into international markets. Tasked with identifying these new target markets, Sauder students developed a sales database and established relationships with potential buyers and like-minded businesses. Building capacity to protect B.C. s coastal wildlife from oil spills With the expectation of increased tanker traffic in British Columbia s waterways, the Oiled Wildlife Society sought out UBC Master of Management students to help them increase their capacity to help birds affected by spills. The students identified the not-for-profit s pain points, and made recommendations for new revenue streams and partnerships, more efficient administration and creative marketing strategies. The project helped us experience first-hand the challenges that not-for-profit organizations face, and it has also allowed us to gain fresh perspectives on how important strong business practices are to the success of any organization. Vancouver: A City of Ideas West Coast Entrepreneurial Spirit Vancouver has a reputation as a place that inspires people to develop creative ideas and start new businesses. In 2014, TED hosted their famous conference in the city, describing Vancouver as a city that s itself an inspiration cosmopolitan, energetic, innovative. In the tech sector in particular, Vancouver is gaining recognition as a hub for start-ups and Silicon Valley North. Vancouver start-ups and tech companies that hire MM grads include Pulse Energy, SAP, Hootsuite, Vision Critical, Microsoft, Stemcell Technologies and Electronic Arts. The UBC MM reflects Vancouver s West Coast spirit and provides a collegiate and supportive environment for you to develop the ability to think strategically and creatively in any situation in your future career whether it s finding solutions for your future employer, or building the products for your own business. 10

West Coast Lifestyle Vancouver is one of the world s most livable and diverse cities, offering a temperate climate and unlimited options for outdoor adventure from after-class ocean kayaking and sailing to weekend skiing, hiking and mountain biking on the nearby mountains. This cosmopolitan city is compact enough to make its recreational and cultural attractions easily accessible, and big enough to ensure there is always something new to discover. 11
